The not so Official January Transfer Rumour Thread

Just shows how polarised the views of fans can be at times. FSG are taking stick on the Echo page for going for this lad, probably the same fans who moan about Spurs and Arsenal picking up exciting young attacking players all the time.

A few years back, if Rafa had signed an International Brazilian winger we'd have all said he was buying exactly the sort of player we needed, now it's all meh because people have become dead set against the ideal about trying to build a long term future.

It's their problem if they have. Building long-term is the only viable strategy for us. As for almost anyone, for that matter.

Agreed Mark, if the Echo is right and we sign Coutinho and Ince as well as Sturridge then I'll be the first to applaud FSG. That's good money invested in good young players, which is all I really want from them on the transfer front.

Personally I was never that keen on the Sneijder signing. Admittedly I've not seen much of him the last couple of years, but his outright greed in refusing to take a pay cut in return for more pkaying time should be a real warning. Would he have had anything like enough hunger? That sort of behaviour really pisses me off in a player already rich beyond most people's wildest imaginations.

He IS a world class talent.

I don't expect him to make much difference this season though, so you have a point there. But I think this is exactly the kind of signing we should be taking a risk on. At this point we can't compete with Man Citys and Chelseas of the world for established world-class players. But we can invest in young players with world-class potential and build a team that will eventually equal the biggest-spending clubs in terms of talent and beat them at teamwork and cohesion.
Is he an Eriksen type of player or more a tricky winger? I've never seen him play, and as I reckon you have loads I'd love a more thorough breakdown of his PROs and CONs ability wise.

I am quietly optimistic on behalf of this signing judging from peoples reactions (and his name) I am however slightly concerned he's not Danish (and the fact that he seems to struggle to get a game with Inter, doesn't seem to score much and looks very light-weight overall and Coldplay is being used in a compilation of his).

Yeah. I wanted Sneijder but only if the deal was right. Now that he's chosen Turkey because of money I'm not at all bothered we lost out. I'm glad we tried though.

Sneijder is already behind me and now I'm firmly on board the Coutinho bandwagon.

Waste of money I think.
We have a decent squad already and anyways it's not like this signing will secure us the title this season, this season is finished.
Why not save the money and buy some real world-class talent in the summer to complement Suarez, so he'll see the club has ambitions.

We bought Agger, Skrtel, Mascherano, Suarez all in mid-season. It's true that they may not have much effect on the current season, but that also gave them an extra 1/2 season to prepare and adapt to the new season, especially the foreign based players.

There are pros and cons, depends how you look at it.

Arbeloa too.

I don't know anything about Coutinho (unfortunate name - you know what that is going to become amongst rival supporters) but the first trick on the first Echo link had me .. and then it got better. I've just wet myself.
What do you mean 'rival supporters'?

I'd heard the name but hadn't knowingly seen him until Jr.Windever posted a Youtube clip, a couple of days ago.

As jaded as I am with the state of things LFC/fottie-wise, generally, I'm a sucker for some new dead skilleh player.

I'm definitely having him.

Here's another one for you then. Be warned though. If you watch this, a little bit of wee may come out

Having just watched his youtube's I am getting more excited about this signing. A real tricky winger. Apart from a few splendid cameos from Sterling when was the last time we had the honor to watch a real dribbler on our wing? Love to get one of those again.

And he's already wearing a scouse wig.

It would be a waste of time if we were signing some Riera / Pennant esque signing to go into the first team now. Someone like Coutinho is a real talent and now is absolutely the right time to buy someone like him. We've got half a season left where he can bed in with no real pressure because the team is in transition.

But to be honest I don't really care about any of that:

1. His name ends with 'nho'.
2. Not only can he do stepovers, he can do all the other cool shit too.

That's all I and anyone else should need to know. Sign him no matter what the cost!

It's a thrilling signing.

It actually is quite exciting. For years we've all said we need to sign top end talent before they become so desirable they're out of our reach. This is a prime case of this. The lad has skills a plenty from what little I've seen and certainly pace to burn. He could improve the team and, if it didn't work out, we're still likely to get a healthy return on our investment. I'm excited at the though of this more so than Sneijder as he's young which means he'll be hungry. The downsides are youth, a new country to settle into and inexperience but well worth the risk in my opinion - for what little that's worth

He can flick the ball over defenders !

Once again, this man...he doth know.
