What rumours though?
Skrtel has had his head turned by City, and he's on their list of several CB targets.
But nothing concrete has happened yet I'm guessing?

Lescott was sold for 24 mill, if City come for him I'd want 20 mill or 10 mill + Richards/Johnson

I reckon he has 3-4 years of top football left in him. If he'd come for about 15 mil, we should be all over it. That said, I'd be very very excited if we got Clasie, who has the potential to be as good, if not better.

I just think that unless you're talking about a Pele spending £15m on a player who'll be worth nothing in 3 years is always going to be dodgy business. That we're in a general period of transition and unlikely to be winning titles in those 3 years makes it even less appealing. We should be concentrating on younger players who can make a good contribution now but will be even better in a few years.

Peter: to a large extent, yes, but the team will still need one or two older players to add to the mixture meanwhile and give it the best chance of succeeding in its aim. If Alonso (or whoever) performed that function it would be £15 mill.well spent, because the value we'd have got out of him would far exceed the fee we'd have paid for him.

Johnson is a possibility. Don't want Richards - tremendous ability, but sh!t for brains.

You need some experienced players aswell, and Alonso is probably one of the better players , if not tje best, around in his position.

Clasie is more lucas type player

Re experienced players, I was going to make the point but didn't have time: obviously I agree that you need experienced players as well, I'm all for that. What I'm against is investing in rapidly depreciating assets. The obvious solution is imo to target players who have already depreciated, so generally the 31-33 year olds. Players like Bellamy or even Gary Mac.

Re whether Alonso would pay for himself by getting us back in the CL. I think this is confusing the real issue of whether the owners should be willing to invest in that goal. I think they should, but it doesn't follow that the investment should be more risky than necessary. £25m spent on a 25 year old would almost certainly be much less expensive over 3 or 4 years than £15m on Alonso, and probably just as likely to return CL qualification in year one and much *more* likely to return it in years 3 and 4, given performance differences between 28-9yr olds and 33-4 yr olds.

If we believe all the rumours we will have a brand new team bar 4 or 5 old players

The squad certainly needs more pace, but also more intelligence, and if Alonso comes to supply the latter it would more than make up for the expenditure.

I read a few days ago that Mancini had singled out Agger as his top target apart from Newcastles Coloccini.

Let's not all go overboard here, and see what happens instead. Rumour-time galore.

I am a bit surprised though about the amount of rumours about Skrtel wanting to leave mind. As Mark said he clearly stated a few weeks back that he loved it at Liverpool.

Personally I have got a sneaky suspicion that Rodgers might prefer the Coates/Agger setup. So perhaps there's something there.

Liverpool are reported to be lining up a £17 million swoop for Manchester City winger Adam Johnson.

Talks are set to move forward in the coming days and the Kop outfit are hoping the Blues will do quick business on the England star who narrowly missed out on Roy Hodgson's Euro 2012 squad.
New Reds boss Brendan Rodgers knows he also faces stiff competition from both Sunderland and Newcastle for Johnson, but the Merseysiders are understood to be willing to match his City wages.
Former Anfield boss Kenny Dalglish set the wheels in the motion last season and Liverpool scouts have been tracking the tricky 24-year-old ever since.
Rodgers is also a huge admirer of the player and has been told the funds are there to push through a big deal.
Johnson is now looking for more first-team opportunities to further his England claims and Liverpool are confident they can provide them.

Great we are fighting against Sunderland and Newcastle. Scraping the barrel aren't we?

Yeah he looks decent

dont see why people wouldnt want johnson, quality player, 12 mill would be a good price, 17 is a bit steep if it's that mind

Bendtner being linked with us today KHL. Your dream birthday, innit?

Hope you're having a good one btw.

If we have Downing and Bendtner in the same team I cannot support that decision and I cannot support the club.
