Surely 2 years on the contract is enough to get full market value, especially if there are several clubs vying for his signature? What we want is a Citeh v PSG battle. Either that, or Skrtel deciding he'd like to sign a new contract and stay put. That's what I'd really like to see.

He did dismiss it all though didn't he, a couple of weeks back?

Not gossip but more positive comments from Alonso:

Spain and former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has claimed that Brendan Rodgers' appointment at Anfield gives him "hope for the future".

The 39-year-old replaced Kenny Dalglish as Liverpool boss following the Scot's dismissal last month, and Alonso thinks it is a good appointment.

“I think that everyone is really optimistic about the new manager [Brendan Rodgers],” he told Goal.com.

Asked if he was surprised at Rodgers' appointment, Alonso replied: “Not really. As far as I knew, he was one of the ones who was going to be approached. As a Liverpool fan it gives me hope for the future.”

I wouldn't have been too concerned if we sold skrtel last summer , i didn't think he'd been too good for a season or two . But obviously he was great last yr and i hope he's here next . But if he wants out after one top season then fuck him .

I don't reckon he does fundamentally want out, or we'd have heard a lot more from him and/or his agent. If he goes, I reckon he'll regret it. It'll be Torres all over again.

If he wants out and we get top money for him I wouldn't be that bothered. He's had one great season and will he fit in with Rodger's style of play given he's not that great with the ball.

I don't know, JJ. I think if we were hearing from his agent, it would be as likely that it is a case of wanting an inflated contract. From what I've heard he has said he wants to play in the CL next season, and he's asked the club to listen to offers for him. There is every chance that he has been discreetly informed that a certain club would like him, no doubt doubling his wages in the process.

Sheiky: I'd view the prospect less lightly than that, for a number of reasons. We'd have to find someone else of the right standard and character and give them time to settle, a job which would itself be made more difficult by the fact that we'd be losing a top player, which could make us less attractive as a destination.

im not too fussed if he goes to be fair, if someone wants to pay an inflated fee considering he's had one good season for us then let them, surely there's a defender we can get in who's just as good and probably cheaper too, we probably need another centre back anyway carras getting on and aggers always been a bit dodgy fitness wise, id like coates to get more game time but from what ive seen of wilson he isnt good enough

Fair points. I hold to the Torres comparison though - he'd be going to a club which might well not guarantee him first team football and leaving one where he's happy. Question is whether he'll be level-headed enough to realise it.

anyway , i reckon we need at least one big major signing this summer to send out a message and build some confidence . sadly i don't think we'll get it so we'll have to hope for 'smart' signings i guess , players who have potential and might step up to another level when here .

Maybe, but we've got to find him, outbid others for him and then give him time to settle in. I'd sooner keep Skrtel if we can.

and then want to leave if they do step up.

It may be that Skrtel will provide Rodgers' "war chest" this summer. If City are really coming in for him, we might consider part exchange deals...

I'm more optimistic than you. There's no way FSG would have appointed a new manager without making a respectable amount of new transfer money available, enough for one "marquee signing" at least, though Rodgers may well also have to sell to buy.

I think he's good enough to be a partner in any central defence in Europe, just about. Unlike Torres whose injuries mean he'll never be quite the devastating force he once was, Skrtel is approaching his absolute peak age as a defender. I can only see him getting even better. I'm afraid Kompany and Skrtel might line up together next season.

Micah Richards might need rescuing from Man city as well.
A super prospect who seems to have plateaued at the moment.
A new club might just get him to step up to the level he seemed to be heading for.

Doc: not convinced. Unless Kompany himself switches sides that would mean Skrtel going back to playing as the left-sided CB, where Lescott's playing at the moment. I question both whether that would work and whether Skrtel himself would like the idea.
