The NBA thread - 2010/11

No Jesus Ball Night. Notre Dame and BYU in seperate regional brackets, so unless they both get to the final four they won't meet.

Marvellous day at the tournie yesterday. Anyone else watching this? If nothing else, the names of the colleges rule. Gonzaga beat St John's! Go Gonzaga! The brilliantly named Morehead beat Louisville. And where else could Butler defeat Old Dominion? Richmond get past Vandy by Presidential decree.

So, Bulls for home court advantage? What are they, 31-4 at home? Tight defence to battle on the road in the playoffs. Anyone think they can go the whole way?

Who's your pick for the NCAA Golgotha?

For me, the only names that I really know are Duke, UNC, Michigan and Gonzaga (more for the name).

You'd fancy Ohio State and Duke to get to the final four. Duke especially can only get better as Kyrie Irving looks like he will be brought back into the team as the tournie goes along.

Syracuse look the only team who could bother Ohio in their part of the bracket. It would be a romantic story of George Mason could beat them tomorrow, but I expect a bit of a beating and for Ohio State to go forward and meet Syracuse in the Elite Eight.

The Southwest bracket is interesting because you genuinely have three teams who could win that. Kansas are the one seed, but Purdue and Notre Dame can ball. Especially Notre Dame. There have been a couple of upsets there already as the 12 and 13 seeds beat the 4 and 5 seeds and now play each other, and the winner (Morehead vs Richmond) should play Kansas. That's the romance in that bracket.

Either Duke or Texas should win the West. That's a toss up. If Duke get shooting from the field they'll kill you, and if Irving is back and sharp then he probably tips the balance.

You see how I'm completely not picking anyone at all? Yeah. Single elimination. And it's basketball. You have three guys who can get it done, then you can play anyone, that's the beauty of it.

I think the surprise team (as much as a two seed can be a surprise) is San Diego State. They will meet either Duke or Texas in the Elite Eight, and could get that far under the radar somewhat as the teams they have to beat aren't all that. They've had a really good season so far and I'm not sure people think they're serious.

Butler knock off Pitt. Brad Stevens is sick in March. Coached the team to the championship game last year, and they're back again now making a nuisance of themselves. Would love to see a bit of Butler back in the Final Four again.

OSU are devastating George Mason. Sullinger and Lightly are outscoring Mason by themselves right now. Lightly 7 from 7 from the field.

Yeah, that went downhill in a hurry at the end there. SDSU knocked off too. Butler still living the dream though. Gotta love that.

Ha ha ha! Virginia Commonwealth beat Kansas. Led them almost the whole game. Reckon Kansas were already looking at the championship. With Duke and the Buckeyes out they were writing their name on it.

This year's tourney is great. Butler vs VCU for a place in the title game.

The BCS cartel must be watching this and bracing themselves for an avalanche of abuse in the future.

Great final tomorrow night. The best coach of the year versus the best player of the year. Can't argue with that.

Who's your pick?

I just don't know. I want Butler to win, especially after they lost last year. It would be great to see a non power conference team win. UConn is a good story too. They won like nine games in nineteen days to win the Big East and then get to the Final Four. And Kemba Walker has been a revelation.

Butler have to keep Walker out of back to front transitions, particularly when he links up with Napier. If Napier dominates Mack then Butler have a problem. Butler have a great defence, and I reckon Smith will be thrown in more to help Howard try and dominate UConn off the boards.

Awful game tonight, TBH. Butler went into halftime with the lead with only 6 field goals. UConn finally got on a run in the second half and did it when it counted but still a poor game all around. Nevertheless, congrats to Walker and Connecticut for the victory and condolensces to Butler for a tough loss for the second straight year. Can't call them Cinderella anymore: they're a top program.

That was a real grind. Butler were disappointing with the ball in hand. Very poor.

People keep saying they're not a Cinderella program anymore, and they're not in terms of they can replicate their success, but in terms of what that success is built on, the resources they have compared to power conference schools, then they will always be the underdog. The fact they've had consecutive trips to the big game only serves to highlight what a fantastic job Brad Stevens is doing.

Kyrie Irving has declared for the NBA draft. No 1 pick? But what if New Jersey or Washington wins the lottery?

Thought he might stay in and give it a go with Doc's kid next year. Especially with the NBA likely to stumble themselves into a shutout or some stupid shit.

That looks very likely. Will he be able to get a contract before the CBA expires? If so, that could be the reason why as rookie salaries might drop with the new CBA.

Do I have to cheer for the Heat now?

Can you imagine cheering for them? I hate LeFraud.

I would say that would be a major motivation in the NFL, but there is already a rookie scale in the NBA and I don't think it will go down in the next CBA. The players want more money and rookies only get a guaranteed two year contract in basketball, so it's not quite the same problem as in football.

In fact, if there is a shutout, I'm not even sure if the draft will happen, and if it does, whether he'll get a contract signed before hand. Even if he does get a contract signed, no player is paid during a lockout. I'd say the NBA is way more likely than the NFL to actually miss games. Irving didn't play much for Duke. He could be taking a risk not playing much his rookie year either.

Duke are losing Smith and Singler too. Austin Rivers better be ready to go.

Mavs are in a bad slump right now ... hopefully the last one before the real games begin.

Going out in the first round again, my friend... The papers and radio stations over here are all in "the end is nigh" mode.

As may the Celtic, I fear, if we do not buck things up somewhat - My only reason for confidence is that we looked exactly like this this time last season too...

Assuming Bynum's knee injury is as minor as the Lakers suggest it is. That fella sneezes and they worry he'll be out for eight weeks. Also, I'm waiting for this chicken pox thing to go crazy. Be hilarious to see what Stern does if the Lakers squad all go down.

GO LAKERS!

I worry about Bynum's health too. And Kobe hasnt gotten chicken pox before. 😱

IF, and it's a big if, the Mavs can beat the Trail Blazers (their bogey team during this regular season), I think they can get to the Finals.

I've watched a lot of them this year as they are finally not painful to watch and I think the Knicks will beat the Celtics. I don't think they'll be able to guard either of Melo or Stat. However, I think Rondo will easily be able to exploit Chauncey when Douglas isn't on the court.

* The Grizzlies are 3-1 up on the Spurs. Wow. Who would have thought that tanking the last few games of the season would help the Grizzlies that much?

* Kobe has a sprained ankle but will play on. Hope that doesn't mean my Lakers' chances are gone.

* As I type, Dallas hold a 20 point lead over the Blazers in Q4 with 4 mins to go. I dont think the Blazers can mount another comeback.

It's crazy - this headline, "Grizzlies pull away from top-seeded Spurs to seize 3-1 series lead" is such a "Wait, did I read that right?" headline ...

Mavs won ... Hopefully they close it out in 6
