The NBA thread - 2010/11

I do love a good dunk though. And the All star Weekend is a million times better than the Pro Bowl. They should bin off the Pro Bowl game and do some sort of crazy Combine for the pros. QB shootouts, ridiculous long catch competitions, whatever. It'd have to be better than the shambles of a game we see these days.

Sounds far better than the Pro Bowl already!

Before last season ESPN had four top PAC-10 QBs together and did a bit of target practice. It was hilarious. Nick Foles and Jake Locker were shite. Andrew Luck drilled the target first time with a perfectly horizontal shell. Kid is fire.

Would love to see the pro backs put through drills on TV.

Excuse me chaps could you not bring me running back into Sports for this crap. I thought someone had posted a clip of Kat's boobs.

BOOOOO.

The New York Knicks acquired Carmelo Anthony on Monday night, sources told ESPN The Magazine's senior writer Chris Broussard.

Completing the deal, Denver will get Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov, the Knicks' 2014 first-round draft pick, the Warriors' 2012 second-round pick, the Warriors' 2013 second-round pick and $3 million in cash while Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter and Renaldo Balkman will head to New York, according to the Denver Post.

Anthony wasn't at the Nuggets' practice on Monday night. Instead, the All-Star forward was in Burbank, Calif., taping a segment on "Conan."

Anthony, who has been the subject of intense speculation as Thursday's trade deadline approaches, stayed behind in Los Angeles following the NBA All-Star Game while his teammates gathered at the Pepsi Center.

Team spokesman Tim Gelt told The Associated Press that Anthony's absence was excused. Late Monday afternoon, Anthony tweeted: "Headed to Burbank to film THE CONAN SHOW."

Anthony has been the subject of trade talks ever since he declined to sign a three-year, $65 million extension with the Nuggets last summer. His biggest pursuers are the New York Knicks and New Jersey Nets.

ZOINKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Howard has turned down a 2 year extension with the Magic ... Rumblings are the Lakers are very interested.

Chris Paul will end up with the Knicks ...

Be interesting to see how Melo and Billups gel with Amar'e. Amar'e makes a living on the pick n' roll and was forming a good understanding with Felton. Don't know if he'll hit it off that well with Billups. They might just end up running more isolation plays with Melo. But knowing D'Antoni, who's really an excellent offensive coach, he'll find a way to mesh them together.

Seems an obvious move for the Lakers, especially given how leggy they look this season.

The New Jersey Nets finally landed a big-name All-Star in a blockbuster trade that gives them point guard Deron Williams(notes) and sends rookie Derrick Favors(notes) and point guard Devin Harris(notes) to the Utah Jazz.

The Jazz also will receive the Nets’ first-round pick in 2011, which could be a lottery pick, cash, and Golden State’s 2012 first-round draft pick.

“I feel Deron Williams is the best point guard in the NBA,†Nets general manager Billy King said in officially announcing the blockbuster deal Thursday afternoon.

“I spoke with Deron and he’s excited about it. He understands where we are and where we want to go. In this league, you win with point guards. Jason Kidd(notes) turned this franchise around when he came and we feel Deron can do the same thing.â€

The Nets now hope Williams will sign a contract extension with them, which they can offer this summer. If so, he would become the face of their franchise when they move into their new arena in Brooklyn for the 2012-13 season.

WOW - big trade

They want to be getting back on the blower to Sloan pronto.

Um, we got rid of your problem, have a shit load of new players and draft picks, and we're fucking shit without you. How much?

Bonkers day.

Perkins and Robinson to OKC for Green and Kristic.
Gerald Wallace to Portland.
Baron Davis to Cleveland and Mo Williams to Clippers.

Perkins going is a stunner. I mean, what's he going to do? Play Shaq there? Pfft. Krstic and Green are big bastards though.

Suns trade Dragic for Brooks. Not a bad trade. I used to like Dragic but he had regressed this year. Brooks is an exciting player to have on the bench.

It's a fucking good move for OKC though.

It's a fucking great move. They have a fuck off huge bear guarding their basket now. Perfect move for the playoffs.

Er, Williams didn't sign an extension with the Nets. Would be hilarious if they handed over that treasure chest for a one season opt-out.

Pistons = carnage

Four players binned off a shootaround and then sat out the match with the 76ers with 'headaches' and 'upset stomachs', leaving them with a match squad of six players. No way Kuester survives this. Players not playing in protest is outrageous though. You might think the coach is shit, but you don't motherfuck your fans like that.

Can't sell the club, gone from being Eastern kings to alsorans, and the players literally won't play for the coach. What a mess.

MC _ I read about what happened, but why exactly? Is it only because of a bad head coach (that's a piss poor excuse considering how many bad ones there have been) or something else?

That's what it appears to be. Some of the players have been restless for a while as Kuester is constantly messing about with the starting line-up, and they still can't get a consistent run going. Then the deadline went and they didn't bring anyone in (or let anyone go, if that's the issue). I have to admit, it seems extreme. Being unhappy doesn't usually escalate to mutiny. I heard that there was a planned protest before the All star break but that senior players were assured that the club would be getting rid of Kuester then. He's still there, so maybe that's the problem. It's all completely crazy though.

Kuester clearly isn't getting it done, but I wouldn't want those players in my team either, even if they are the best they have. Clean house in the off season.

Virgil Green ran a 4.5 forty yesterday and jumped 42.5 vertical. He's a 250lb tight end. Ran routes like a headless chicken at Nevada, but still. Worth a glance in a later round. Housler out of Florida Atlantic was quick too.

Also, Godzilla turned up in a Marcus Gannon suit. Dude was huge, solid, fast, and his feet looked good. Played guard for the Hornfrogs, not sure if he could be moved further right or not.

Technically this is in the wrong thread too, but has anyone seen this : http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=6175090

Crazy :

Brandon Davies was dismissed from BYU's basketball team after he admitted to having sexual relations with his girlfriend, the Salt Lake Tribune reported Wednesday.

BYU's honor code forbids students from having premarital sex and instructs them to "live a chaste and virtuous life."

The newspaper reported that Davies met with school officials on Monday.

BYU officials would only confirm Wednesday that Davies wasn't involved in anything criminal that resulted in his dismissal from the team.

University spokeswoman Carri Jenkins said an honor code review is under way to determine if the BYU sophomore will be allowed to remain in school, as well as his status with the team next season.

BYU's honor code also requires students to be honest; abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee and substance abuse; and attend church regularly.

Er, yeah. BYU. As in Brigham Young. They're owned by the LDS.

Last season they brought disciplinary action against Harvey Unga, one of the best running backs on their football team. He left the university and went into the supplementary draft (as it all blew up after draft eligibility had to be declared) and Chicago took him as a seventh round pick. WINNING! He got in trouble for fooling about with the girl who he married about two months later.

I guess it would have been okay if he was fooling about with three women who he was married to, but not one who he wasn't...

Go to their school, follow their rules!

There's something there to admire. Davies wasn't a bencher, he was their leading rebounder, and they got tanned by New Mexico in the first game without him. With him and Jimmer Fredette they had a real chance in the NCCA tournament. Now you have to wonder.

They were ranked number three after beating SDSU last week. They looked a sure bet for the Big Dance even if they lost the MWC tournament. But if they lose a few more games, who knows? SDSU must be over the moon, gives them a real chance at the automatic March Madness berth with a MWC win. And BYU are no longer looking a lock as a pick with the New Mexico defeat. They'll plummet in the new rankings.

It's a shame. I really wanted to see them bracketed with Notre Dame. Both teams were top ten. Hansbrough vs Fredette in a Jesus Ball Night.

UCONN's women team won their 89th STRAIGHT game yesterday ... Surpassing the John Wooden led UCLA record of 88 (mens).

Fuck UCONN women. Anyone see their men? Five nights, five wins, Big East championship won. Kemba Walker was fucking awesome. particularly his buzzer-beater against Pitt.

Wonder if he gets himself into the first round shake up just by the sheer magnitude of his awesomnity? Six foot one, gotta ask questions about playing PG in the pros.
