The Mo Contract Saga

It’s not greedy and the term is such a lazy term in this context.
What’s the market rate for Salah if he was to leave now ?
Compared to other jobs such as the Morgan Stanley CEO who was paid base $33 million, are they called lazy?

The amount of time and sacrifice a guy like Salah had put in by the age of 30 to get here must be something. Only a few elite sportsman can demand this and in every game he goes into especially when younger as footballer is always a game away from career ender so I have no issues with a few whom can demand what the market can play. After 35, they are done with them. Clubs throw away younger players without due care soon as they are done. So why shouldn’t a few get the best market rate for what they are worth and like others, it’s a self serving world and fans aren’t exempt from it.

It’s not a question about what Mo wants, it’s whether we can afford to pay it.
Any guy who steps up for a CL final for a penalty with all tha pressure that goes with it in my deserves everything we can pay especially with what happened in the CL final before. Good luck to him. We either put up or shut up.

As has been said, the market will dictate.

If he gets paid more and the others aren't happy, then they can go if they want and if someone will pay more to them.

They will all get market rate if FSG and Klopp want them.

Remember the 500k figure irls an initial bargaining posn. So whilst the 400 he may end up with is still "obscene" it's closet to what the other stars will be getting.

If I remember correctly, after that Salah deal fell through, we almost ended up buying Konoplyanka with the Dnipro owner pulling out on the last day of January transfer window.

Funny how things in football eventually turn out. Konoplyanka at the time was probably rated more highly than Salah. He'd had an excellent Euros in 2012, and he was looked at as the new Hazard. His career never took off.

Salah, on the other hand, had a couple of difficult years, but made himself into one of the best players in Europe through sheer dedication and work ethic.
'In Europe'. Are there better in Asia /South America ?!

I know there are many who can put up really good reasons for paying sportsmen excruciatingly high salaries however I'm not one of them. When compared to a doctor/nurse/etc. etc. it's ridiculous (same goes for politicians - blood-sucking twats).

Ditto, what he's put into it. If we're talking hours and effort not skill then I should be earning even more ! I worked 12 hours a day (and 6 for certain and sometimes 7 days a week) most of my working life. And my work wasn't always enjoyable. Yes yes there are lots of answers to this (advertising, entertaining the masses etc.) but that's not the point. It's just a sport.

Anyway I know I'm at the opposite end of the spectrum to most on this (and I'm talking globally) so I'll STFU.

re. Mo. We can't afford to lose him.

Depends which doctor? Not going to generalise all as due pay upgrade.
Anyway, don’t really want to get into discussion about Doctors v Sportsmen.
I worked 12hrs a day but no way is that same as what someone like Salah has given on the way to this journey to someone whom can demand 500k a week which was my point.
It’s an elite sport, it’s dictated like anything by the market. Doesn’t mean everage Joe like Mark Noble can demand it but Salah can so it basically comes down to that.

I know you weren't blowing your own trumpet but you were very much proven right in your assessment of Mo back then.

To be honest, even I’m slightly impressed with myself there 🙂. I certainly got my share of wrong predictions over the years, but on this occasion I was able to clearly articulate why Salah was going to be a success at a time when few took him seriously and 8 years later I have to say it all sounds pretty spot-on. A few other posters were also believers from the start.

The only thing I got wrong was overestimating how two-footed he was; now I know on this you have to make allowance for quality of the opposition - you can beat a weak defender 10 different ways, but at a top level you have to gravitate towards the 1-2 things that work most consistently.

Maybe it is greedy but PSG could and probably would offer that kind of salary to him.

It’s definitely a difficult decision for the club
The Al-Thani family are trillionaires, it would be difficult to separate their fortunes to that of the state.
We aren't gonna compete

I think the owners might to well for themselves to get to an agreement ASAP, because the way he's playing, he's going to win Ballon d'or and then we can definitely not afford him. I'm not joking.

This.
It's a dangerous game not to lock him up when he's on this form.

I agree that in general football players being paid anywhere close to that amount of money is pretty obscene, but if you accept the realities of the market, Salah should be earning one of the top salaries in world football, because he is obviously one of the best players in world football and also a global icon in a way that someone like Mane or even Van Dijk isn't. There must be a way to structure this in a way that doesn't totally break the wage pyramid at the club. And I think what he's asking for (even if those figures are not exaggerated) is still well below the likes of Neymar or what Mbappe will earn in his next contract.

Call it an outlier contract and put strict requirements in it.

You can see the issue with our other key players. If they aren’t compensated in a similar way they walk and we go shit again and Mo won’t be getting as many accolades.

All the other players due extensions have been extended this summer, that’s their problem.

Scoring goals regularly at the highest level including CL aswell as being our designated penalty taker is the hardest job in the team. He’s also a stand out player for the brand across the world representing LFC.
If it came to the question, does Mo deserve twice as much as Fabinho or Virgil currently then afraid the answer is yes, but that’s not really the issue here.

So a story about contract negotiations being far apart came out on the eve of the game – curious timing. If FSG think they can continue with their "Mo Salah is being greedy" narrative, honestly fans should revolt. Everyone will now be saying "extend the contract," but I wouldn't be surprised if FSG dig in – they like to see themselves as metrics-driven mavericks staying calm and calculating amid the emotions of football, the contrarian moneyball men. Fans need to put maximum pressure on them and make clear where Mo Salah stands in the history of the club – there is no way they should contemplate letting him walk out of the door.

EDIT: Not sure the Guardiola quote in the tweet I originally quoted above is genuine, I removed it for now.

It’s widely reported we have this wage structure and players get massive bonuses. That would’ve been the starting point to any negotiations. Imagine finding out a matter of months later that Mo, as brilliant as he is, gets treated differently. They would be absolutely livid. You would be if it happened to you at work.

Most work places always have allowances for a special person.
I would suggest if Mo does get beyond the wage structure and you are going into contract negotiations and want to use Mo as an example then you better be prepared to justify that, there is really no one the current team whom can demand or justify themselves as Mo can so don't really see why shouldn't make this one off special allowance. Whom else in the team over the next 2yrs can really go into Klopp's office and say I'm worth as much as Mo, so come on and pay me?

The positive is Mo has given us first option to spend the rest of his career at LFC, to be honest I didn't see that happening and thought he would have move on by now so that shows he feels happy and wants to stay. It's Mo's one last big contract, he has every right to ask what he feels he is worth.

Clubs are coming out of Pandemic and a few of the big clubs next season are going to be prepared to huge money with budgets free to spend more including Real, PSG, Juve and City. Best not to assume covid financial prudence is always going to be around forever and no one over the next year will have they money prise Mo away as we had been able to last 2yrs.
As a club, I can understand if we can't afford what Mo wants but that's a different issue but hopefully we as a club are honest and professional about it and not label Mo as greedy or asking too much because both are not true and rather beyond LFC.
