The midfield

Let me ask something about this Trent thing in MF. So Millie has just about played everywhere, Hendo has played multiple positions and so has Fabs. Good players are able to play multiple positions. Now moving Trent to MF where he can play CM/RM, wouldn't that free him up of some his defensive responsibilities and allow him to be more creative?

No - good utility players can play anywhere.

Great players tend to stick to one position and own it.

Obviously there will be the odd exception - but generally when you’re one of the best in a specific position - you don’t get moved around.

We are talking about when the MF is depleted. Why would moving Trent further up relieving him of his defensive duties lose his creativity?

Also Klopp said he didn't need "a player" I wonder if CJ, Naby, Ox are "the player" or "a player". Nat "a player" helped us get 3rd.

Given the number of posts over the years for moving TAA into midfield, I am surprised there has not been a clamoring for moving Matip to midfield. I am not saying we should do it. But is good on the ball, can defend, and once he gets moving can go past players and knows how to play incisive through balls. In crowded spaces, I rate his ability to make incisive passes higher than Milner, Hendo, and Naby. Has actually played the position before. We actually have better cover in central defense.

I am not a fan of moving defenders up front. But if folks feel we should move TAA upfront, why not use Matip upfront occasionally? Especially in games where Fabinho is not available.

Matip hasnt played as a DM since the 11/12 season. Not sure I would start him there in the Premier league now. Fabinho at CB last season kinda pushed me into the keep players in their natural and usual position.

Because the midfield role is different to the RB role - requires different skills and abilities.

Different attack lines, different responsibilities m, different focus.

It just feels like it’d have a minimal or negative impact.

I don’t think our defence is broken - we don’t need to change it.

Didn’t we learn enough during the CB injury problems a few seasons ago - that moving players out of their normal position to cover other positions weakens the team overall?

I am not saying we should. I am not a fan of moving defenders upfront as I have said earlier. All I am saying is that if we are thinking about moving TAA upfront to address midfield issues, I am surprised no one has suggested Matip as an alternative option for moving upfront.

I like this , the entire media and fans are applying the pressure on the area where we have been ignoring for a long time. All that money generated last season, players sold all over the place, and yet still we just acannot afford it. It is strange when you look at the big picture, you look at all the major European teams with the highest euro trophy count, and relative to their leagues they tend are wealthy enough not to feel pinched for 30M at least. But us, fucking he'll, what are ?

I personally would be happy with any player, or even a player 70% right.

That guy for Crystal Palace that setup that pass for Zaha, I mean he had good energy etc...how fucking hard is it to find a player like him who kinda reminded me of Camavinga. We have become so fucking scientific at signing players that I reckon this whole injury stuff and aging midfield is to gear up for a PL win in 2 years and not now, I think FSG strategy is to forget challenging this season for anything, and focus on coming 4 with as little spend as possible.

Yes… I’m sure the FSG strategy is absolutely to finish fourth. I’m sure there was a strategy conference call where they all discussed that after finishing second and reaching ever final possible, that the way forward was to target a fourth place finish and the easiest way to do that was not buy any midfielders.

It’s ingenious.

Diaz is skillful as fuck, so is Carvahlo.

The signing of Carvalho did surprise me. I suppose it's ok account of his youth.

Diaz is skilful, but he's also fast and direct. He's not really known for his dribbling and passing.

Right now, 2 games in, and unlikely to win away at united, I think 4th is all you can expect at best. This team which seems to leak goals because of an aging and underperforming midfield is gonna be as inconsistent as its midfield lineup.
