The Italian stallion

Juve fans are pretty mixed on his performances last year. It reads like our takes on VVD and Diaz post injury, but both are now looking sharper.

Chiesa has proven his body has recovered from the injury but whether he can get back to those elite levels from before is a toin coss. He doesn't need to from our POV, he'll arrive as a supplemental forward with ambitions of becoming so much more, and *if* we can keep him reasonably fit then he'll be worth the small outlay.

Arriving the the PL from Seria A at 26 when not at peak levels isn't a road that's been successfully travelled. But there's a reason he's cheap. Success criteria for be matching Diaz of last year and giving us opportunity to rest and rotate Salah this year, and hopefully beyond. Any more of that then it's a win.

It does have an air of rummaging around in boxes at a car boot sale for an anniversary present, convincing yourself she's always wanted a tea stained Sports Direct mug and an untested copy of Natalie Cassidys 'Then and Now' workout DVD, but that's just FSG vibes all over.

Sorry, no apols.for including Paletta who had an Italian passport because of his Italian ancestry.

I'm not seeking any apologies. I just think it's odd to include an Argentinian born and bred in a thread about Italians coming from Serie A.

You might as well add Pellegrino to your list as well.

Well both were shite too.

...who hadn't shown themselves to be sh!te until they got here. Believe that's just bad luck if you want to. I don't.
Not just here but every premier league club. Apart from Vialli and Zola, has any Italian made a long lasting impact in this league?

There is some strong stereotypes bandied about though.
Italians have generally struggled a bit in the league, but the balo or borini comparisons are completely off the mark

Wasn't there a baldie Italian in the 90s too?

Edit - that was Vialli. The one I'm thinking of played for West Ham and caught the ball to stop an unfair advantage

That was di Canio.

There was a nearly baldie, Lombardo, at one time. Played for Palace if I remember rightly. OK player, not bad, not brilliant. Ravanelli started well at Boro but dipped later on.

They really aren't. Both had decent careers before their Liverpool moves and Balotelli got back into the national team after he left.

Feels like our team could/should be more ruthless and make an exploding offer that expires by a certain point to stop the players stalling.

On reflection, if the fee is low (10-12 million) and the wages are manageable (under 100k), then this isn't the most terrible signing.

The thinking at the club is probably this - Salah almost always plays 3000+ minutes a season, and our 6th choice attacker is someone we just need 1500-1800 minutes from. But it needs to be a player who provides end product in those limited minutes. With that perspective, a Chiesa type is likely far more valuable than a Doak or a Carvalho. Basically he needs to come in and play the Shaqiri role in 18-19 (1400 minutes with 6 goals, 5 assists)

Chiesa also seems like the kind of Italian who might succeed here - he speaks fluent English, which isn't very common for Italian or Spanish players, and he's also one of those who's pretty passionate and emotive on the pitch - our fans will definitely take to him.

The injuries are of course the big concern; but even if it all goes horribly, we can probably sell him to the Saudis in a couple of years for 10 million

I also think he might be seen as more of a fit in a fluid attack than Nunez (maybe also Gakpo) and we see one of these two get deprioritised to playing cup games at best.

Its lucky we get 5 subs now, because at least its easier to keep a lot of them happy and manage minutes across the attack.

He can also play anywhere in attack and has that type of dynamic and energetic playing style that would be a great option to have of the bench.
Was thinking of how Arsenal have been using Trossard for that extra type of quality off the bench.
Chiesa could be that player. Creating chances and having a good goal record.
