again you post like people WANT alonso to leave.

This thread is so big, I can't remember who has said what now, but there has been a fair amount of arguing that Alonso is practically redundant, doesn't contribute that much etc. You can't go on like that and then say, oh but he's amazing and of course I'd love him to stay.

I mean, way to cover all bases, right?

If he goes and we buy well, "I was right because I said he didn't do all that much and look, here we are all fine" or if he goes and we miss him, well, "I said he was a top player and I didn't want him to leave".

Fuck that for real.

[/quote]Youre right i guess.
I think ive made my position quite clear. I'd be much happier to start the season as we are now than Xabi out and anyone else in. Id prefer the situation to remain as is.
I dont think that excludes me from having a say on what i think should happen if he goes.
My point regarding his limitations have nothing (certainly for me) to do with my thoughts on him staying or going. I dont see it as the end of the world if he goes and i think he can be replaced, ANYONE can. Doesnt mean we have to like it.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I don't think anyone will disagree with that mate. It's not the end of the world, not like it would be if we were talking about Torres or Gerrard, but when one of your key players (arguably player of the season) is potentially leaving when you have a real chance of winning the title after an insane wait... well, it's just something you'd like to avoid and a big risk.

If we're discussing potential replacements and changes to the system for when he goes, cool - I've gotten involved in that too - but I do think those discussions have at times gone the way of devaluing or undervaluing his role in the side. If we end up in the same situation with Masher, I wouldn't expect to see "meh, all he does is kick lumps out of people - we could just as well get Alan Smith to do that".

Heh anyways, I'll say no more on the subject - I think half of the problem is that we're not being linked to any players and our pre-season is boring as fuck. Bring on the new season already.

yes, the 'alonso gets the ball and then passes it' will live long in the memory. so simply and yet we seem INCAPABLE of doing it when alonso isn't on the pitch. we look so fucking disjointed when he doesn't play it's untrue. alonso pulls the strings and has done for years.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

if chelsea make an official bid for alonso we should make an official bit for essien, so how they like it.
if man city make an official bid, meh, they have no one who will improve our team (in central midfield).

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

He won't be going to either of them, if he goes he'll go to Madrid.

If Madrid are outbid by either of the others, Alonso will want to stay, I think we could all live with that.

Not necessarily true Anita. Madrid may be outbid but Rafa may still sell to them as:
a) He finds the figure acceptable
b) He won't want to strenghten a rival
c) He won't want it to come back and bite him on the arse.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

From The Times July 23, 2009

Jamie Carragher wants Xabi Alonso future resolved quickly, Peter Lansley

Jamie Carragher, the Liverpool defender, has called for a swift resolution to the impasse over the future of Xabi Alonso, who is a target for Real Madrid, but the Merseyside club may be more unnerved by fresh uncertainty surrounding Javier Mascherano.

Rafael Benítez, the Liverpool manager, has told Mascherano he is not for sale at any price, despite interest from Barcelona, but the Argentina midfield player’s agent, Walter Tamer, has said that his client is “tired of life in England†and “wants to go to Spainâ€. Tamer added that Mascherano has grown unsettled on Merseyside because his wife has yet to be granted a permanent visa to live in the United Kingdom.

Alonso, though, remains by far the more likely to leave Anfield, with Real preparing to raise their bid from £24 million. The Spain midfield player sat out Liverpool’s 1-1 draw against Thailand in Bangkok yesterday with an ankle injury, but it is doubtful whether he would have played in any case.

Carragher said: “The feeling within the squad is that Xabi is a top player and you do not want to lose your top players. Hopefully it can be sorted out as quickly as possible.â€

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Quite frankly I'm disgusted with the apparent disloyalty of our central midfield this close season. Should they need to be replaced then the nationality and potential for homesickness of the newcomers needs to come under careful scrutiny to avoid a repeat of this nonsense.

Carlos Kickaball: "Si"

Rafa: "Do you think you'll get homesick if you join LFC?"

CK: "I no understand?"

Rafa: "Your family. Your parents, your 35 brothers and sisters, your goats, your jumpers for goalposts upbringing, your shantytown existence - all stuck back in Ecuador. Is it possible you may at some stage, any stage in your time here at LFC, miss some or all of these things?"

CK: "Si, si, ees possible. My goats ees very special to me"

Rafa: "Next"

Yeah, that would work well Wilko. Fucking super idea.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

The future of Liverpool's Xabi Alonso remains uncertain after the midfielder admitted he cannot give any guarantees regarding his career.

Former Real Sociedad star Alonso has been strongly linked with a return to Spain as Real Madrid make no secret of their desire to secure his signature.

The 27-year-old is reported to be unhappy at Anfield after Reds boss Rafa Benitez appeared prepared to sell him in order to raise funds in his unsuccessful pursuit of Gareth Barry.
Alonso has admitted he is flattered by Madrid's interest and he confesses that he is unable to say if he will remain with Liverpool for the long-term.

After the Reds' pre-season friendly draw with Thailand on Wednesday, he said in the Daily Mirror: "It's difficult to give any guarantees.

"For now, I'm just enjoying myself in Thailand."

Alonso was not a member of Liverpool's squad for the 1-1 draw in Bangkok as Ryan Babel'searly goal

Real Madrid To Close €35m Xabi Alonso Deal With Liverpool - Report
Xabi will be a Galactico in the next few hours, says the Spanish press…

Reports have emerged in Spain speculating that Real Madrid are within a matter of hours of completing the signing of Xabi Alonso from Liverpool.

It is not, however, the capital-owned dailies that are making the assumptions, but Barcelona-based Sport, which believes that Los Blancos have decided to table a fresh €35 million offer that the Merseysiders have accepted.

The Anfield outfit, lead by the uncompromising Rafa Benitez, had initially refused to budge on their €38m asking price, while the ‘White House’ were unwilling to offer any more than €27m.

But the newspaper claims that both clubs have decided to put an end to their impasse, which led Madrid to make their €35m bid, expected to be a take-it-or-leave-it proposal, last night.

The Merengues' sporting director, Miguel Pardeza, had said of Xabi, “He would be very good for us because he would bring balance.

“The transfer market has turned the creative midfielders into an extinct species. The very few who are left are either highly valuable or impossible to prise away from their clubs.

“We’re not signing him just for the sake of signing him. I wish there were more alternatives to Xabi, but the market does not offer any.â€

Sport then went on to point out that Alonso sat out Liverpool's friendly with Thailand last night because the Reds wanted to prevent any injuries that could scupper the deal, although the club argued that the midfielder was carrying a niggle.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

All I can say is that, in all honesty, if Xabi wants to go back to spain then leave him. But I firmly believe that he wants to try and win more silverware with this club next year .....and even if he doesnt, then he has acted in the most professional way possible towards getting out of here. I truely believe if Rafa is to start a new dynasty this season then we HAVE to have Xabi in midfield.......if we dont keep him, I dont care who we sign.....they're not gonna be anywhere near a good enough replacement!!

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I don't even care anymore, I just want it to end. This transfer saga is getting to us.

If he wants to go and they offer us what we want, fine.

And you "don't care" who replaces him...

No you idiot......im basing it on the fact that he's still here ((travelled to asia and all he did) so did mascher whos so desperate to get a move to barcelona) and the fact that every and any big player has be linked with Real this summer....... as for not caring about who replaces him....of course I do.....but its a figure of speech....basically we cant warrant selling Xabi and getting someone as accomplished to come in and fill his void.......so basically thats where my 'couldnt care less approach' as to who we get to replace him comes from!! Losing Xabi will cost us.....end of!
