The incredible Xabi Alonso thread 2009.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I'm not convinced Xabi would have a better chance of winning titles with Real than he would with us, Ahmed.
We haven't won a title in ages. Real have. Real have less competition. Real just bought a shitload of quality. That doesn't guarantee anything, but there's no question they are more likely to win the title.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Not persuaded.  Past history counts for nothing once the new season kicks off and, if we can recapture our momentum from the closing weeks of last season (following the thrashing of a certain Real Madrid, granted with a rather different line-up), we'll be riding the crest of a wave they still have to catch.  I'm sure Real would be bookies' favourites to finish higher in their league than we will in ours, but I reckon we're the value bet.

I'm not convinced Xabi would have a better chance of winning titles with Real than he would with us, Ahmed. They've gone the galacticos route before and, while they did win things then, they didn't win vastly more than other teams in La Liga. Joining them might well turn out to be no better than a sideways move for him (and, before you raise the point, I'm not just saying that because I'm a Red).
Of course you are.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

A person can be biased and still judge something correctly. Did you only praise big Sami because you're both Finns? 😉

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

xabi travelling with the squad mean nothing, am I correct in think owen travelled to the states and even played in our penultimate preseason game?

one thing it does show (to real) we're prepared to play him even if he gets crocked, our claims we will keep him if they don't stump up the full amount isn't an idle threat.

Nah, on Liverpool related matters I usually didn't comment on Sami because I was afraid I'd be biased without realising it myself. 😉

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

so...if xabi stays almost certainly kicking another big name signing into touch will you all be happy?

No, that was Micheal Owen, and people still wanted him back. Xabi hasn't left yet, he just thought about it, we forgave Stevie, we can forgive him too.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Revealed: The deal which will convince Rafa Benitez to sell Xabi Alonso
Jul 20 2009

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has rubber-stamped the imminent transfer of Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid on the proviso he receives ALL the money up front.

The Spain midfielder should complete his £32million switch in the next 48 hours and Benitez wants David Silva, 23, to replace him. Crisis-hit Valencia want nothing less than a straight cash deal for Silva, rated at around £20m. Barcelona are no longer interested.

The Reds also want striker Alvaro Negredo in a swap for defender Alvaro Arbeloa, and may sign longterm target, Athletic Bilbao's 20-year-old central midfielder Javi Martinez.

Nothings changed then.

Hows this Arbeloa/Negredo swap thing going to work? I take it we will have to pay them some cash plus Alvaro?

It's from the Mail.

Negredo would be the perfect back up striker imho.

Thought Silva wasn't up for sale, as announced by Valencia?

Negredo sounds impressive from the Shamrock game reviews, but we all know straight swaps don't happen.

And then spare change for Javi? It's almost like a joke.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

its not right comparing alonso to his replacements on an individual basis, because then you convieniantly ignore how perfectly that guy fits into our team and controls the way we play. not one of his replacements is actually capable of replacing that. no one.

if alonso is sold, against totenham on the match thread you'll all be complaining of how disjointed we look and how we can't string two passes together. others will say relax its silva's first game give him time to settle in etc. and then the title will slip away. its that simple.

we do look ridiculously disjointed this preseason. this maybe just preseason rustieness, if it's because we don't have xabi pulling the strings then we have a problem.

I think it's more because we field 24 players per game, mix youth and first teamers, have 2 traning sessions a day and have had a long vacation. Thats why we look disjointed. Our opponents are more fit, having been through their pre season and therefor look much sharper.

IF we play like this against Tottenham, I'll swim across the channel in a shark costume.

I think it's unlikely that Real Madrid have any cash left to pay the whole of Xabi's fee up front since they did just that for the Ronaldo fee. It's just too good to be true if they have a bottomless pit of money!

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

There's little point in dealing with them unless they can afford to pay upfront.

They've took loans out to fund their other 3 major transfers, so they can find the money if they need to.

Rafa's completely right with this stance.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

If Bill 'Twat' Kenwright can even dare to demand £35m for Lescott, Rafa damn well ought to demand at least that for Alonso.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

If he's going to go I really do hope it's sooner rather than later so we can start bedding in his replacement. Has anyone seen enough of Martinez to feel confident he could step right in and we wouldn't lose a beat!?!
