The incredible Xabi Alonso thread 2009.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

What are the chances that the Madrid move doesn't come off and he has another one of his 'off' seasons next season....

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

The thing is, he won't ask for a transfer. So, it's entirely up to us and I think he'll stay.

Hopefully we'll sign one more player and go on and win the league.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Yeah, pretty much.

Confirms what we already knew.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I hope Skrtel wedgies the fuck outta the cunt.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Heh, I know I should be screaming "cunt" and "traitor" and all that given that it does really look as though he wants out, but honestly I can't help but appreciate the way he carries himself. No fuss, no drama, he gives the press very little to go on and everything will be carried out behind closed doors as it should be.
I agree to a degree. If he'd made these quotes a month ago id be happier. But if he wants to go, you have to say fair enough, so long, good luck and lets get the deal that suits us best.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

that interview tells me 2 things. oneis that xabi wants out and two, he is imploring madrid to make a bid we cannot refuse. i am just so glad that he has been forced to be in austria and we are not made to look like softies when it comes to transfers. as far as i am concerned, real can go fuck themselves if they do not match our valuation. if they don't xabi stays.

My biggest concern is that this saga will continue to drag on, for the entire pre season. We should set a date, soon. And if Real haven't forked up the asking price, then he won't leave this season, end off.

Cause selling him in the beginning of august, and not having a replacement. Will fuck up the start of the season, which will fuck up our chances to win the league.

If our asking price is 35m and they offer it August 31st then he'll go then.

Maybe, but selling him on the last day of the transfer window without having a replacement would be suicide. Setting a date is fine by me. I really can't see the point in negotiating for 1 more month.. It's either spunk up th cash now or fuck off.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I half think that Rafa is banking on the sale of Alonso to provide him with the funds to strengthen the team. I just can't imagine that he's happy to bring in Jonhson and that's it - it's not enough.

This might just be me being a little impatient, but everything seems to have gone quiet lately.. perhaps until the Alonso saga is resolved. I can't imagine that we'd let it carry on till the end of the window because then we won't be able to spend the money.

I would hope not, given we'd have no replacement.

I think we can sign one more player without Alonso leaving. The thing is though, why would Rafa sell Alonso to fund Silva/Young? It would solve one problem and create another imho.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

alonso doesn't owe us anything he has given us 3 out of 5 years of top drawer service (I don't give a shit what any one says he was average for two seasons before last year) signed a long contract so we will recieve a big fee I wish everyone that left liverpool left under such circumstances.

I think we're plenty good enough. Obviously keeping G + T fit is vital.

alonso lives 'the liverpool way' and regardless of what a tiny minority may think he has acted impeccably throughout this process.

Let's not go that far, either.

If he lived the 'Liverpool Way', he'd be able to get past his tiff with Rafa and do what's best for the club.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

no he does live 'the liverpool way' - just look at how he is conducting his business,

he is doing what is best for the club - he has signed a long term contract, has been upfront in private with the club and will not force the issue and cry in public.

There's more to this than "a tiff with Rafa Benitez".

The 'Liverpool way' is a very loose ideology and generally means different things to different people - but it's fair to say Alonso has conducted himself extremely well throughout this affair, and his character shouldn't be tarnished.

I almost wish he was acting a cunt.

Not tarnishing it in the slightest.

I too feel that he's acted incredibly well in all this.

But he clearly wants to go, and I'm not sure if there are other reasons aside from the most obvious one.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

the 'rafa tiff' my have nothing to do with this, it may be simply a case of someone wanting to return 'home'.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Of course there is. It's clear he's not particularly close with the manager, but then who is? Xabi Alonso isn't forcing a move at all costs; he wouldn't be interested in leaving if his options were Spurs or Villarreal.

Any footballer would be interested in playing for Madrid right now, and part of him probably wants to return to Spain as well, etc.

It's a tad more complex than people believe, IMO.

xabi - ...

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Yes. This is not a case of a player betraying us or anything like that.
We know that Madrid want Alonso, they have said so, and we can assume that he would be happy to play for Madrid because he has said so.

We really cannot blame him for this. He is Spanish afterall and its quite understandable that he grew up wanting to play for one of the top clubs in Spain, and those opportunities don't come along every season.

Now, the way he COULD have behaved, and the way that Madrid WANT him to behave is to publically come out and say he wants to leave Liverpool, kick up a fuss, put in transfer requests etc, and that way we let him go and the fee goes down. This is not what has happened.
If a player wants to sign for another club (and we can't get all angry everytime they do. Its perfectly reasonable) the way Alonso has gone about this is the best way to go about it!
yep, and he will play as well. tellingly he wont be involved with the publicity shots after the game (source: the echo)

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I'm starting to warm to the idea of Schneijder and a few million Euros really.

He's no passmaster evidently but as he's a bit faster than Alonso we'll probably get a few more weapons when trying to break teams down at Anfield.

Schneijders not short of talent when it comes to scoring goals or converting set-pieces either.

DOIT and let's move on. This thread is boring me.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

how can anyone begrude xabi of wanting to return to spain after years of quality service and us recieving a HUGE transfer fee? what more do you want from the guy?

We're relying on:

- Gerrard staying 100% fit and scoring 20+.
- Torres staying 100% fit and scoring 20+.
- Kuyt to play carry on last seasons form (which was still very patchy halfway through) and get 10+, which is by no means guaranteeed.
- Yossi to contribute like he did for the second half of the season, which is by no means guaranteed.
- Alonso to play out of his skin all season long.

Etc.

What do we do if Torres or Gerrard get injured? We're going to struggle to rest either of them, let alone cover an injury.

What do we do when a game needs changing or one of the attackers is struggling for form? Our squad depth on the attacking front isn't really confidence inspiring.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

XABI ALONSO!! XABI ALONSO!!

He'll be gone by the end of the week for sure. I knew he would be going after the Spurs game at the end of last season.

I'm disappointed in him, anyone can see how close we were last season, I'm saddened that he couldn't put personal grievances aside to see the bigger picture and let his love for the club and fans override. But at the same time I can understand why he wants to go.

Either way, it just needs to get resolved so we know how much money we have in the kitty and what our buying options are.
