The incredible Xabi Alonso thread 2009.

To state slightly higher than what you're willing to accept is a perfectly normal way of negociating.

Like I said, we don't sell him now, we won't get anywhere near as much for him in the coming windows.
But the original asking price was £35m. If the reports are true were accepting £8m less than our valuation. That's practically a quarter of the original asking price knocked off.
and for what marky? why are we making things easy for xabi and real?

And if I made up an asking price of £56m (because Xabi is just as important to us as Kaka was to Milan - slightly strained, but plausible logic), should I be even more annoyed?

It's a silly argument. An asking price is just that. The value of a player is what someone is willing to pay or below which we are willing to walk. If £28m is the number which Madrid accepts and we are unwilling to say No - then that is the value of the player.

Simple really. It just takes a while for the number to become fully apparent.

Last summer Real offered United 100m for Ronaldo, We offered 15m for Barry, Man city offered 100m for Kaka, Olympiakos offered 12m for Alonso, Spurs offered 15m for Downing.
Can you pick the odd one out this year?

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher wants the likes of Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano to commit themselves publicly to the cause.

Carragher told the People: "When you have gone as close as we did last season you don't want to lose anyone from your squad, and all I would say is that I don't want any of our influential players to leave.

"I'm not naming names, but there have been stories that certain players could leave the club and it's important that those things are settled sooner rather than later.

"The last thing we want is to be going into the new season not knowing whether someone is going to leave before the transfer window closes.

"So the quicker these things are sorted the better because then we can concentrate on the business of winning football matches."

It's always the same with negotiations - you end up settling for slightly less than you wanted, and it initially feels like a disappointment. To put this in perspective, though, Barry went for £12m, Carrick for £18m, Essien for £25m. For a player who doesn't score goals and has only recently broken into the Spain first XI, I'd say £28m (plus bonuses, probably) is a pretty good fee. I'd have preferred to keep Xabi, but once the transfer request was handed in, that was never going to happen. As Rafa4PM said earlier, it all now depends on how we spend the money whether this will be regarded as a 'good' or 'bad' transfer.

Spot on.
