It's always the same with negotiations - you end up settling for slightly less than you wanted, and it initially feels like a disappointment. To put this in perspective, though, Barry went for £12m, Carrick for £18m, Essien for £25m. For a player who doesn't score goals and has only recently broken into the Spain first XI, I'd say £28m (plus bonuses, probably) is a pretty good fee. I'd have preferred to keep Xabi, but once the transfer request was handed in, that was never going to happen. As Rafa4PM said earlier, it all now depends on how we spend the money whether this will be regarded as a 'good' or 'bad' transfer.
