The incredible Xabi Alonso thread 2009.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

£27mil is a great price for Xabi. How many CM's have ever gone for more than that?

If we can get in this Aquilani lad (oncy better be fucking right) and Silva, then our summer transfers will have improved our squad.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

For once, Rafa4 mate, I'm going to have to differ. For me it's barely acceptable considering his importance both to us and apparently to Madrid. Given that he's now handed a written transfer request in, though, I can (reluctantly) live with it.

how is 27m a great price? you are talking about one of 'THE' main cogs in the entire liverpool team.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

To let the deal fall through over £3million when the player clearly wants to go would be silly. I think we've squeezed as much as we're gonna get out of them. If we let this pass we'll be letting him go for a fraction of this come the next transfer window.

Yeah I agree really, given our original valuation was said to be in the region of £35m.

He's one of the best midfielders in the world in his role and it's a rather unique one at that.

we said 30 million so they should pay 30 million, who gives a fuck if the deal falls through (apart from real and xabi)? that's the price, pay it or fuck off.

This comment should really be directed towards Real Madrid.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

if we've accepted 27 million pounds we've caved in.

not a penny less than 30 million pounds seeing as though we valued him at 35 million.

so madrid have got arbeloa and alonso for a combined 30 million - disgusted!

fucking pathetic. sack parry!!

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

To state slightly higher than what you're willing to accept is a perfectly normal way of negociating.

Like I said, we don't sell him now, we won't get anywhere near as much for him in the coming windows.

I guess it all depends on how our new signings go this season mate. If through selling Xabi (and its clear he wants out anyway) we can afford to sign the likes of Aquilani and maybe, just maybe Silva, then its not a bad deal no? If we end up signing Lee fucking Cattermole and some other useless tosser with the money, then obviously it will be a total disaster.

A few more goals from CM would be very useful this season, and again how many CM's have ever gone for around £27mil before?

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

20 million euros will go on Aquilani, then we will have the other 7 million euros for possibly Turner?

if we were to win 2 titles and a european cup i wouldn't care if the lad walked for free at the end of his contract.

My hope is 18 mill on Aquilani and 10 on Cole. (Or someone in that mold)

But the original asking price was £35m. If the reports are true were accepting £8m less than our valuation. That's practically a quarter of the original asking price knocked off.

Id like an attacking player but a versatile defender would come in handy!

The fee for Alonso translates into over £27 and three quarter mill, i.e.nearer £28 mill, by my reckoning. Add the fee for Arbeloa and the total is over £32 and a quarter mill - not ideal but not a disaster either.

Parry would have caved in when Real lowered their bid, if not before.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

how much did we end up getting for arbeloa jj? i thought it was about 3 million pounds

£3.5 mill, mate.  Now I accept that both he and Xabi are worth more than we got, but not by so much that the deals were bad ones, particularly as it seems clear that both players wanted out (something Real will have known and used in the negotiations).  Had they not, we'd have been in a stronger position.  All in all, I honestly don't think we've done too badly financially out of this.  I'd sooner have kept both players, but it just wasn't to be.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

yea agree with that. 32 million pounds - hope we spend it wisely. i still reckon a central midfielder and a riera improvement/alternative.

who knows maybe we'll still get rid of doseena and voronin and end up with 40 million.

the transfer request brings it down, without it we would have got around 30 mil anyway, which is what we're probably willing to accept now

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

If someone told me we'd get £32million for Alonso and Arbeloa last season I'd have cum quicker than if Elisha Cuthbert was Fellating me.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

the transfer request does mean about £5-10million worth of wages won't be needed to be paid to Alonso, thats a bonus.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Jessica Alba's got a lovely behind.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

It's always the same with negotiations - you end up settling for slightly less than you wanted, and it initially feels like a disappointment. To put this in perspective, though, Barry went for £12m, Carrick for £18m, Essien for £25m. For a player who doesn't score goals and has only recently broken into the Spain first XI, I'd say £28m (plus bonuses, probably) is a pretty good fee. I'd have preferred to keep Xabi, but once the transfer request was handed in, that was never going to happen. As Rafa4PM said earlier, it all now depends on how we spend the money whether this will be regarded as a 'good' or 'bad' transfer.
