Did Rafa say anything after the game about Alonso?
Meanwhile, Marca quoted 'Pool manager, Rafa Benitez saying after the 3-0 loss to Espanyol: "Alonso still has three years left on his contract with Liverpool and we would like for him to continue with us."

It's a bit like how United fans must have felt when Ronaldo shipped off and they replaced himwith Antonio Deportivo La Coruna.

Except without the 12 league titles in the last 2 years that they've won to ease the worry.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

You could be right Oncy;

From the Echo

XABI ALONSO’S Liverpool career looks set to come to an end after Real Madrid indicated they are willing to pay in the region of £30 million for his services.

Reds officials met with Real executive director-general José Ãngel Sánchez yesterday afternoon as the Spanish giants stepped up their bid to finally bring an end to their summer long pursuit of Alonso.

The talks took place at Liverpool’s team hotel in Barcelona prior to last night’s 3-0 friendly defeat at the hands of Espanyol and though a deal was not struck enough progress was made for Real’s confidence to rise that agreement is not far off.

Rafa Benitez has insisted all along that he will not accept a knockdown offer for the Spanish playmaker despite Alonso having indicated that he is ready to leave Anfield and the Liverpool manager’s patience appears to be paying off as Real finally got closer to the kind of bid he is looking for.

With Roma star Alberto Aquilani already lined up as Alonso’s successor, Benitez will be keen for Real to put their money where their mouth has been and finally bring an end to the transfer saga.

The chances of that happening appear to have been boosted after reports in Spain suggested that the Bernabeu coffers will shortly be swollen to the tune of £18m due to the impending sale of Dutchman Wesley Sneijder to Inter Milan.

One of the main sticking points in Real’s pursuit of Alonso in recent weeks has been their insistence that they did not have the ready cash to meet Benitez’s demands following a spending spree that has seen them spend in excess of £165m on Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema alone.

Benitez has always remained adamant that this is not his nor Liverpool’s problem, however, and has continually made it clear that unless his value of Alonso is met then the 27-year-old will not be allowed to leave.

With the two parties now edging closer to an agreement and with a channel of communication now flowing freely again between Anfield and the Bernabeu it is looking increasingly likely that a deal will be struck in the coming days.

Benitez’s reluctance to give Alonso any more than a substitute’s appearance in the dying stages of last nights’s defeat at the hands of Espanyol was a telling sign of how close an agreement is with the Liverpool manager clearly unwilling to put the Spanish international at risk of the kind of injury that could place the proposed deal in jeopardy.

Alonso’s presence was sorely missed, particularly in the second half as Liverpool struggled with their passing, allowing Espanyol to take full advantage.

Daniel Agger missed the game with a recurring back problem and was today due to undergo treatment at Melwood after Liverpool returned to Merseyside in the early hours of this morning.

Contrast this with the legths that Ferguson's gone to oevr the years to keep his players.
That's just being selective. Did Ginsoak go to great lengths to keep Tevez, Beckham, Ince, Staam, etc etc? He's gone to great lengths very rarely, and only when he's known there's a decent chance of hanging on to a key player.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

AGGER GET THE FUCK FIT, THANK YOU.

Don't care much about Alonso anymore to be honest.

Wonderful player at his best and a wonderful servant for the club over the past five years but he has so evidently decided to move on and so should we.

Can't wait to see who'll replace him.

Fingers crossed we'll get Sneijder as part of the deal. And maybe throw Degen their way too.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

The Telegraph agrees with the Echo and the Times, so it sounds like we'll be getting close to our asking price. I'm fairly pleased with the way we've held firm in these negotiations; the only problem is that it leaves us so little time to replace Xabi. Hopefully the reports of a fee agreed with Roma are true, and hopefully Aquilani can put his injuries behind him and adapt quickly to the pace of the PL. Still, the difference in the fees will only give us £10m, so Silva is looking increasingly unlikely.

As yet, Real have failed to meet Liverpool's asking price – £30 million up front with a further £3 million dependent on his success at the Bernabeu – with the club's president Florentino Perez angry at being held to ransom over a player he does not see as a marketing and merchandise investment. Real have previously intimated they are only prepared to pay a total of £26 million.

Talks between the clubs had reached a stalemate but the dynamic of the negotiations was changed by Alonso's decision last week to hand in a formal transfer request.

Madrid contacted Liverpool over the weekend to request the meeting on Sunday morning in the Juan Carlos I hotel in the Catalan capital, where Liverpool faced Espanyol as their pre-season preparations continue.

Perez, under pressure from his coach Manuel Pellegrini and technical director Jorge Valdano, is likely to submit an improved offer – his initial reaction to Alonso's transfer request was to suggest that Madrid would have to pay less than they had previously offered – while Liverpool may be prepared to lower their price, thanks to manager Rafael Benitez's desire to have the saga over as soon as possible to give him time to seek replacements.

Any agreement is likely to be closer to the English side's valuation, rather than Madrid's.

Sources at Anfield insist the outcome of the talks is far from certain and remain unwilling to put a timescale on a definitive conclusion, though it has been suggested in Spain that Alonso could be a Real player as early as Tuesday morning, a belief bolstered by Real's increasing attempts to trim their squad.

Eight players have arrived at the Bernabeu since Perez started his second tenure at the club, while just four have left, giving Pellegrini a squad of 29 players, when Spanish league rules dictate only 25 can be registered.

Real this weekend sold Gabriel Heinze to Marseille and on Sunday agreed a £15 million fee with Inter Milan for the sale of Wesley Sneijder, the Dutch international, while his compatriot Rafael van der Vaart has also revealed that he will not stay at the club.

I'm sure deals are in place and will be triggered as soon as the Alonso transfer is agreed, so this could be a very interesting week.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Whats the point with the deadlines though? We've now passed the second and are still haggeling. If Alonsos comments are correct, and that he'll accept the desicion any way it'll turn out. We should tell them to get to fuck, as 13 days to get a replacement clicked in our system isnt enough.

If he leaves, I'll be happy with Aquilani and Cole. 18+10 mill.

Combine this with his earlier words that he has done what he can do to trigger any move to Real Madrid I think it seems like Xabi himself is tired of waiting for Madrid. if they really want him that badly they should cough up or fuck off. Same thing happened to us last season and we fucked off.

Charming though, this 'for better or worse' phrase he's been using elsewhere.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

It's pretty simple yes?

We ask for 30m GBP, non-negotiable. If Real cant come up with that sum then dont bother coming back to us with other offers. A

As for Xabi, it says alot when Real doesn't even want to come up with the additional 3-4m.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Liverpool have confirmed they are in talks with Real Madrid over the proposed transfer of Xabi Alonso, with the Spain international welcoming the discussions over his future.

Alonso has been a long-term target of the La Liga giants, who have been restructuring their squad with a number of high-profile big-money signings throughout the summer.

Rafa Benitez was initially unwilling to part company with the talented midfielder, but his stance softened when the former Real Sociedad man handed in a written transfer request.

The Spanish giants have so far been unwilling to meet Liverpool's asking price for the Euro 2008 winner, which is believed to be in the region of £30million.

Liverpool managing director Christian Purslowmet with Madrid executive director Jose AngelSanchez in Barcelona on Sunday to discuss Alonso, with the Reds in the city for a friendly against Espanyol.

Continue talking

Purslow confirmed to Spanish newspaper AS that he had spoken with Sanchez but that no agreement had been reached.

The Reds supremo admitted the meeting had been arranged by Benitez, with everyone at Anfield becoming frustrated with the ongoing press speculation over the possible switch.

He said: "This (meeting) has only served to put our positions on the table. We need to continue talking.

"Rafa arranged this knowing what was coming. It was important that we know. So far, most of what is being said is a lie. We were negotiating through the press. It makes no sense.

"Now, I have been impressed by Madrid and Jose Angel. They are friends and will remain so."

Agreement
Alonso claimed he was unaware of the meeting but added: "It's reassuring to know that Madrid and Liverpool are talking seriously now.

"I decided a long time ago to stay on the margin of everything that was happening.

"My stance has been clear, as you all know. I'm a professional and I must wait for an agreement to be reached, but I hope it is resolved soon, for better or for worse."

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Apparently according to SKy, 32mill euros has been accepted by us.

Thats just over £27million, I dunno if I'm happy with that, I know it's only a matter of a couple of Million, but I'd much rather it be closer to £30million

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

true, but it would close the saga and is a very good price for him.
