The incredible Xabi Alonso thread 2009.

i think we've learned that lesson after nunez. vdv isn't good enough.

FINALLY

Summer just isn't summer 'til we do the VdV thing

Xabi Alonso's move to Real Madrid remains in the balance after he was included in the Liverpool squad for tonight's friendly with Espanyol.

Tomorrow night?

the comparison isn't necessarily in the player it's in the seller. it's kinda like going back to the same dodgy second hand car dealer. he conned you the first time by selling you something that didn't work. next time u go, if you're forced or indeed stupid enough, he'll know the first con won't work so he'll sell you something overpriced.

the question really is will he sell you something he values? i don't think they value vdv so if we we're to have him it should be on our terms not theirs.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I feel a bit depressed even hearing about VDV. Do you remember how long that rumour lasted about us signing him, or signing a pre-agreement, or buying him 'secretly' and loaning back to Ajax, or...whatever, back in Ged's day? One of the most excruciating sagas we've had in recent times. He was quite promising in those days. Not these days. He hasn't come close to realising his full potential.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

If Real are really interested in a part swap, there are players we'd like.

VDV ain't one of 'em.

They can bugger off.

That's a little unfair. You're forgetting about the form that earned him a move to Madrid in the first place. He was fantastic at Hamberg. Again, the fact that he hasn't had a look in at Madrid is not necessarily a reflection of his ability. He started very well for them but for whatever reason Ramos didn't fancy him when he came in. I still think he'd be worth a punt at the right price.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

He was good at Hamburg. I wouldn't say fantastic. Voronin did quite well in Germany.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

He scored 29 goals in 74 games and was handed the captaincy by his second season there. He's twice the player Voronin is.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Yes, but it was still the German league. We can keep going but I don't think that's a great place to judge how 'fantastic' he is.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

If you believe the speculation, Real Madrid have offered a final 'take it or leave it' €25m bid.

ON YER BIKE PEREZ!!

It's a unique style of negotiation: 'This player is absolutely crucial for us. But we don't think he's worth that much. But we MUST have him. So we'll lower our offer'. Truly bizarre. Stupid but also arrogant.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Leave it, he's worth more than that to us.

I said he was fantastic at Hamburg, which he was. I don't know how he'd get on here. My only point was that you can't write him off based on the fact that Ramos didn't pick him for Madrid. It may be he'd flop here, or it may be that he would prove to his doubters that he can cut it at the highest level.

Which is precisely why I said I think he'd be worth a 'punt' at the right price.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I didn't write him off. I said he still hasn't come close to realising his full potential. I don't quite see why you're so determined to make this into a big argument. Arguing about potential is pretty pointless. Time will tell. Personally I don't see LFC as in the right position to gamble on such a thing. A crucial season is coming up. We need top quality players who will hit the ground running in a fast-paced and very physical league and fit into our system. But I'm happy to agree to differ. I don't mean to dismiss your views, which weren't even there when I made the first comment!

For once, I disagree with you. I think Van Der Vaart's a cunt, he's overrated, and I want him nowhere near our club.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I don't know enough about his 'attitude' problems to comment, unfortunately. I think he's a talented player though. It may be that he fell into the trap of believing his own hype but one would hope that his failure to make it at a big club thus far would have a humbling effect.

He's versatile and he scores goals. I'm not saying he'd be anywhere near the top of my wishlist but if other targets are priced out of the market I wouldn't mind us gambling £10m on him. I dunno. Perhaps our inactivity in the transfer market is beginning to get to me.

I wasn't trying to start an argument. Apologies if it came across that way. You may well be right. I just thought you were a little hard on a player who, like many others, has been frozen out by Madrid. He would be a risk, but an affordable one. I guess it depends on what we've got to spend. I agree we should primarily be focussing on proven quality though.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

So what's the fuckin craic with all this shit?

Weren't Madrid given 48 hours to sort this outout a week ago? In 13 days, we kick off our season. If this shit is gonna happen, it needs to happen 2 weeks ago really.

At what point does Rafa say 'na, sorry, it's now to close to the season starting'?

Surely there's a deadline on this fucking charade.

If we're looking at that type of player, which we don't really need to anyway, I'd sooner have a punt at Diego.

So would I. I LOVE Diego! He'd be two or three times the price though.
