The incredible Xabi Alonso thread 2009.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

The real danger here is that we'll end up with Lucas starting our first few league games - and given that the first one is away at Spurs, that's not something I'm very comfortable with.

Who we can replace him with is directly associated with how much we get for him so of course it's an issue. I do agree that we shouldn't drag it out for another week over a couple of million but neither should we roll over just because we want it sorted. At the end of the day, he's still our player.
Thats precisely my point Del. If we're holding out for money to ensure we can afford our targets then fine, if we are just being Johnny Longwang for the sake of it, to PROOVE we arent to be bent over then its counter productive and ridiculous.
The actual number is totally irrelevant.
So if Rafa hasn't been quoted prices for possible replacements then holding out for best value for a player who wants to leave is ridiculous? Pity Utd didn't think that way when they sold the Gay one.
Well theres about 17 differences between the two, but yeah if thats what you wanna go with then cool.
Name some of those differences.
No. Like i said if you think United selling Ronaldo is the same as us selling Xabi then thats fine. Im really ok with that.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

If we start the season with a Masher, Lucas combo I'll be fucking livid.

It doesn't work. It never will.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

There is a danger that we dig our heels in too deep with the transfer fee and the sale doesn't happen. We're then stuck with a player who doesn't want to play for us and who will inevitably end up leaving at the next possible opportunity, for a lot less than what we can get for him now.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

None of this is without risk, Anita, but I doubt that Xabi would go just anywhere or that the fee would come down by much (if anything) given the length of time left on his contract.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

The punters are enjoying the great British summer indoors here at The Transfer Tavern when one of our Spanish regulars tells us that MARCA is reporting a new twist in the Xabi Alonso transfer saga.

Apparently, Real Madrid reluctantly agreed to increase their bid from €25 to €30 million, a closer figure to Liverpool’s €35 million valuation of the player, on Thursday. However it now appears that Rafael Benitez has shifted the goal posts again and demanded a basic fee of €35 million, payable immediately, which could rise to €40 million based on how Alonso’s career at the Bernabeu pans out.

AS, another Spanish daily, claim that Real are expected to give Benitez the opportunity to bring either Alvaro Negredo, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar or Rafael van der Vaart to Anfield in a cash-plus-player deal.

Should Benitez agree to the proposal put forward by Los Blancos, this will bring Alonso’s fee down and with the Kop boss keen to draft in a striker to play alongside Fernando Torres up front which would make €15 million-rated Negredo and out-of-favour Huntlaar the ideal candidates should he accept the part-ex offer.
So what sort of liquid sauce was at the source of this one? Are Liverpool really holding Real to ransom? Should this rumour Fly or Die?

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Balague did say the other day that we want 35 plus 5 euro so that ties into that story.

Good thinking Dante.

Have you done this before? How effective was it?

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

not with 15 million coins, that'd be about 125 tonnes. you'd a get a few in through the mouth, the nose the eyes and ears, and then maybe pile the rest on top of him

I don't want it to be our first choice partnership, but it worked well enough when we hammered Utd 1-4.

I wouldn't say that scenario is quite as bad as that, Anita. Johnny Barnes always looked determined to leave until he had his achilles injury, and then he not only refocussed on the club again but also became more of a fan than he ever was before and put down roots in the area. If Alonso was forced to stay he'd be playing for the world cup, and after that he could either get a good enough fee or come to terms with a career here. But he's obviously going so it's all academic.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

John Thompson did a 'chat' on the Echo site yesterday. Nothing dramatic but in case it's of interest here are some snippets:

Xabi Alonso has handed in a formal and written transfer request as we said yesterday. While no-one has confirmed it officially, either the club or Xabi, please rest assured we would not have published that story were we not entirely satisfied it was accurate - the last thing we'd want to do is mislead passionate fans or readers.

Our Liverpool writer Tony Barrett has never reported any serious interest from LFC in david Villa, though he is a top class player.

We have many weeks back now reported or revealed that LFC had put in a bid for Silva, who benitez admires and has targetted, but LFC dropped interest when Valencia hiked the price up.

As for player swaps, Benitez won't be interested in Bernabau cast offs or makeweights. If he thinks someone is worth bringing to Anfield from Madrid, he may consider it, but only on his terms.

Back to Xabi Alonso - yes he did hand in a transfer request.

Latest story to emerge is £19m + Van der Vaart being offered by Real.

FUCK OFF REAL!! £30m or shut up!

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

A player + cash deal clearly is the way to go

VDV's overrated and a bit of a bellend.

Sneidjer's the better footballer but no sure where he'd 'fit' if we're also buying a Xabi replacement.

Huntelaar's a fine striker, IMO, but would he get enough games?

Haven't seen Negredo.

I think its 30m straight cash.

Xabi Alonso's move to Real Madrid remains in the balance after he was included in the Liverpool squad for tonight's friendly with Espanyol.
