The improvement in Lucas Leiva

Status
Not open for further replies.
Yeh he has still got to prove himself over time but I simply cannot see how people can deny he's improved. To make out though that people give him too much credit when he's played well - especially on the back of a clear MOTM performance - is just rubbish. If he plays well then he deserves credit - like any other player. If he plays shit he deserves criticism.

I think Morse is right. Some people can't give the lad credit when it's very much deserved. Yeh, he's been shite in the past. Awful at times. I myself said he would never be a first teamer but, should he keep on improving the way he has, I think he could be. Honestly. He looks miles better and much stronger plus his passing is very much improved. He looks a good player of late. I watched him carefully last night and he was excellent. Some people just can't get over the "Lucas therefore he must be shit" stuff. It's a bit sad really. I'm seriously starting to change my mind on the lad given some of the positive performances this season
And I feel some people tend to give him too much credit when he has a good game just because some go over the top when he has a bad one.

He has improved but I think it's fair to say he needs a lot more of those good games to convince it is not just a peak in form.
I'm not basing my judgement on one game. I'm basing it on what I see in front of me this season - every game - in the flesh. If I think he's been shit I'll say so. If he's played well and shown consistent improvement then I'll say so as well. he has so I have. It's as simple as that. Without getting into the match going\TV debate you simply cannot get a full view of the game on the tellybox or some shitty internet stream
You don't go to away matches though, do you Sunny? He's not the only one of our players who's underperformed away from Anfield, but he has, all the same.

And the one game I saw him live this season (WBA) he was absolutely shit.

Tbh I think ILD has summed up this whole issue perfectly and there's nothing much else to be said.

IMO Meireles was MOTM yesterday. I didn't really mean it was yesterdays performance he got too much credit for though as he was very good. Just in the past there has been a couple of occasions where he has had an ok performance and has been given higher marks than deserved just as he sometimes gets lower marks than he deserves when he has a bad game. It tends to happen with disputed players like him.

Anyway, I think we agree on the main issue so this is a bit trivial argument.

Nope I don't go to away games any more. So ? I've done that - been there thanks. I get to see the team a lot more in the flesh than most on here. So I'm perfectly well within my rights to give my point of view and say what I think whether you think there's nothing more to be said or not. As are people well within their rights to give their opinion who've watched in on the telly. The point is - you get a different perspective on the game and you cannot deny that. Not saying you have to agree with it nor do I really give a fuck. I'm as entitled to my opinion as the next man is to his. Anyway. the whole team has underperformed away from home as you've alluded to - so he's not alone there is he? Yeh he was shit against WBA and.....AGAIN, the whole team were. But we're not discussing how shite they are, are we ? Wonder why that is..??

Fact of the matter remains people simply cannot give the lad any credit when it's due just because they're too afraid of losing a little face. I've called him all kinds of useless twats in the past but I can at least give him some credit when he's earned it unlike some narrow minded posters on here.

Yeh ILD made a decent balanced post but if I want to discuss it further then I'll freely do so ta.

I don't think Bunnyman was having a dig at you for not attending away games mate. You Pete, Vlad, Mark Mc, Portly, Crump and a few others go to more games than the rest of us do between us and he knows that. I think he was alluding to the fact that Lucas seems to play poorly more so away from home. However I do agree with you, If everyone is shit, Lucas shouldn't be singled out.

He has obviously improved and many need to start giving him the respect he has earned THIS season.

Was about to post something similar.

Though Bunny's post did look funny at first glance.

Lucas has been crap at home too, incidentally..it's not as if he's only good at home and shite away..

But he has been steadily improving over the past few weeks and who knows?

Maybe we'll have a decent player after all.

And other players have been crap at home too. And away. This season he's played no worse - and at times no better - than many players. Maxi was fucking shite at the start of the season. Not seeing him getting much stick at the moment. Kuyt's been shit all year. Paul Konchesky. Joe fucking Cole. Spearing. Babel. Jovanovic. Ngog. All have played worse than him overall this season

As far as I can tell, Lucas gets praise on here when it's deserved. But seeing as he's received almost unprecedented levels of abuse in the past, people are a little over-zealous in trying to ensure he gets credit when he plays well.

Yep it would be boring if everyone had a similar opinion all the time. 😉

And there are others who also think Lucas wasn't MOM judging by the MOM-thread and I didn't mean that as a dig towards Lucas. There were at least 5 players I thought could get a MOM on a different day.

Yeah, can't disagree with much of that actually.

Though I think it can be explained; some of those players have played well in the past and been pretty good...so maybe they get a break for when they are shit.

But Lucas has been pretty poor for a long time; and maybe he's not going to get much of a break until he shows some quality consistently.

I'm hoping he can, and will.

So why should not the reverse be true ?

Other than Kuyt, when have any of those players I listed played well for us consistently?

I think you misinterpeted my last post, Sunny. Obviously I wasn't having a go at you for not attending away games. In fact, I wasn't having a go at you at all. I don't even think we disagree. It's just that your opinion of Lucas is mostly based on his home performances, which have been generally good, but not unanimously so (which is why I mentioned WBA). But they do only tell half the story.

I also didn't mean to imply that you shouldn't or couldn't debate it any further - just that I agreed totally with ILD's analysis: ie Lucas looks a much better player alongside someone like Ming or Gerrard, who take on the main creative burden. The times he's looked crap have generally come when he's played next to Mascher or Poulsen - players whose attributes are too similar to his own.

And FWIW, while Lucas is obviously a bit of a whipping-boy on here, the likes of Konchesky, Cole, Spearing, Babel, Jovanovic, Maxi, Kuyt and Wash HAVE taken plenty of stick too this season. The only ones who haven't, really, are Stevie and Reina.

That's fine. Nowt wrong with disagreeing on things. A forum is a place for debate. It does irk me somewhat that's all and it comes on the back of a 'debate' with some lad yesterday at the match.

I'm surprised you managed to reach ;D

Sunny does have a point though.

Most of them HAVE taken some stick; but if you combined all of it together it'd stillprobably be less than what Lucas has received.

As far as I can tell, Lucas gets praise on here when it's deserved. But seeing as he's received almost unprecedented levels of abuse in the past, people are a little over-zealous in trying to ensure he gets credit when he plays well.
Yep, that is pretty much what I was trying to say as well.
And I disagree with that.
We'll just have to agree to disagree on that point then.

I just think this whole argument is a bit of a no issue as almost everyone seems to agree on the main issues here.
That's fine. Nowt wrong with disagreeing on things. A forum is a place for debate. It does irk me somewhat that's all and it comes on the back of a 'debate' with some lad yesterday at the match.
Yea agreed. Much healthier to vent on a forum than smash some lad's face in at the match too.

What'd he say?

Just a superfan Lucas hater having a pop at the lad during the game cos of one misplaced pass. The lad had a great game last night and here's some div having a pop at him. I wasn't alone in making comment

Lucas is like a cross between Roy Keane and Michael Essien...sorry wrong forum.
Lucas will never be good enough in my book, but if the alternative is Poulsen then more power to Lucas's extended run in the team.

I've thought that for a long time but I think he could be if he keeps on improving and is more consistent. The next 20 games may be very interesting for Lucas
