The brand new Eriksen thread (now with added Fabio)

Really we're a 4-2-4

Gerrard and lucas are the 2,and then it's a front 4 of wingers, striker & the suarez in the hole.

Eriksen would have to play in the hole or on the wing as he's too weak.

Unless we play a holding player and 2 players in the hole, but then we have the issue of is lucas good enough on his own?

I wouldn't be surprised if Rodgers where pondering on a reversed midfield 3. One holding and two advanced CMs.

...............Lucas..............
........Eriksen......Gerrard....

Allen would also be well suited in that role. As would Henderson I believe.

We'd still need a top class DM.

Of course he is. That's been the plan all along, but it got adjusted because of necessity.

I think Lucas is good enough, once he recovers his form. I know many will disagree, but I am not worried about the DM position.

We need a wanyama or diame A LOT more than we need Eriksen. We're lightweight as it is. Its not like we are lacking in creativity. The money we would have to spend to land eriksen could buy us that steel and and strong CB.
agree to some extent, however, if we have learnt anything from manure's dominance, it is that you can never have too many attacking options - year after year, manure have soo much attacking power - van persie, rooney, hernandez, wellbeck, nani, valencia, giggs, kagawa - these are all first teamers and internationals, no youth prodigies.

Rodgers also reacted to claims from Ajax' technical director Marc Overmars that Liverpool are attempting to sign Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen.

'If you read what he says, he says we’ve had scouts there - but we could have been watching any of them, we could have been watching players from the other team,' Rodgers added. 'I won’t speculate on anything.'

It's not necessarily Lucas that's the problem though, it's a complete lack of strength and athleticism in the midfield. When Hendo plays he covers ground and puts himself about and we look alot better, but we need more again.

You think Lucas is not athletic? He is fucking workhorse.

He is so clever, our manager is.

I really hate this 4-2-4 we've started playing. It looked shaky against Spurs, and we got bum-raped by Southampton. We need 3 in midfield, not 2.

I like Erikssen, and unless we're shipping out a few attacking players, eg. Assaidi, Downing - then we should be looking at a more defensive minded midfielder. I don't know, let's say, hmmm.... A BIG SOLID AFRICAN!

There's a difference between being a workhorse and being physical and athletic. Lucas would be more like a Hamann, we lack physique and athleticism in the middle of the park, it's not a slight against Lucas it's just an observation. Yes he's a good DM, but we're still leaking goals and leaving gaping holes in the middle of the park. As I said, when Henderson plays (aswell as Lucas), we look more solid in there because Lucas sits and reads things while Hendo covers ground more and harrasses people. I'm sure Lucas does it too, but we lack a genuine terrier in there who will cover ground for 90 minutes and win the ball back for us regularly. Lucas is good at challenging players and reading what's happening, we need someone who gives us a physical presence in there, it's two entirely different things.

You could argue that Şahin had the same attributes, having good technique doesn't always see you get away with it. You still have to have the industry to match, particularly in a midfield two. He looks pretty lightweight at times and gets bustled off the ball too easily, even on those videos, he loses possession a few times from challenges that aren't particularly robust.

As for 433, we've played that more often than not this season, the point I was making is that Rodgers has said for a while he sees Suarez as the playmaker, and he's tried to put him in behind Sturridge a few times
this season and also tried it with Coutinho coming inside too. Unless the longerm philosophy is Suarez up top with Eriksen behind, which leaves question marks again over Sturridge. His preferred wide role is left (though he'd rather be central) and we now have Countinho to add to the mix. Personally I think it points to Eriksen playing in the middle of the park, and that's where I have my doubts, given we're already incredibly
lightweight there and we already have an abundance of players there, one of whom Rodgers has already punted £15m on.

Sahin lacks the pace and balance of Eriksen though, which makes the adjustment to an uptempo league much easier.

Rodgers switched from 4-1-2-3 to 4-2-1-3 after we shipped a lot of goals early in the season. New system and Lucas injury was probably why imo.
We're now playing 4-2-3-1 but I think Rodgers wants to go back to 4-3-3 (4-1-2-3) with Lucas as the defensive midfielder.

We wont play the same 11 every game and need a quality squad and a plan to replace Gerrard.

Course we do, but Rodgers must have an idea of where he wants his XI to end up, and we seem stock heavy in attack positions in terms of first teamers AND prospects. Which is why I think he wants him in the middle.

We already have:

Suarez
Sturridge
Borini
Coutinho
Gerrard
Downing
Sterling
Suso
Shelvey

and they are covering those four positions between them. Suso and Shelvey could go on loan, Borini or Downing might leave and yes, we do need to look at Gerrard's future. Priorities have to start at the back though, we need about four defensive players first and foremost.

I rate Eriksen highly but in this system he'll just be making our attacking side even more top heavy, we lack balance as it is. So unless there are some serious outgoings happening in the Summer with loans and sales, then it's difficult to see the rationale and therefore the likeliness of this happening, despite how great he is. And if he is buying him for a midfield two, there has to be concerns in terms of how powerful and imposing we are in the centre of midfield. It's an issue now, buying Eriksen won't cure it.

Not that I'd balk at us having him though 😉

His first touch and spotting and weighting of passes is phenomenal. He's also got good feet and shields the ball surprisingly well. He may be "lightweight" but I can't see him being bullied off the ball.

RVP was 29 though. £20m is still less than Nasri went to City for.

True, but you could also argue that Nasri had already done the being promising in a lesser league thing and then gone onto produce a great season at a big club playing a very competitive league. Plus City did overpay because they're City.

If we are watching Eriksen today we will place a bid tomorrow, he's been brilliant.

We have to buy Fischer too despite he's so young.

Starting to remind me of Suarez. Only with a Bergkamp-like killer-instinct. Just scored as cheeky a goal you will see this Season. Will become more expensive than Eriksen because of his goals.

Where does this fish kid play? I hope we do place a bid tomorrow, id love to have our signings sorted out before the window starts.

Ajax mate, he's got a thread on here will bump it with his goals today.

We know we've been watching Ajax loads so Fischer is certainly on our radar. Could become too expensive.

Are the press in Denmark pressuring Olsen to call him up to the national team?

I mean position, not club.
He is best suited for a role on the wing in a 4-3-3 system. Or as the second striker. Perhaps however he'll adapt over time into a front man too. In the Suarez mould.

He could become a leading top scorer in one of the big leagues imo as he's such a clinical finisher.
