THE ASHES... 2009
It's what, 2/3 weeks to The Ashes. Ryan/Roopy, the build up is non existent here (in WA). I'm 100% sure when it starts it will be headline but I'd expected to see more by now. What's it like where you are?

To be honest mate, it's quite quiet here in VIC, but that's understandable given that footy season is in full swing, and err... Brad Hodge didn't make the touring party.

Seriosuly though, they were chatting about Phil Hughes and other stuff on talkback radio this morning, claiming he'll be the hit of the summer. I'm not so sure; he goes too hard at it, too early. And I think he might struggle with the swinging ball. Fortunately for Australia, they've got Ponting, Clarke, and Hussey to follow him.

Right, are we gonna make a stab at the starting sides for Cardiff?

I'll have a go...

England:
1 - Cook
2 - Strauss
3 - Bopara
4 - KP
5 - Collingwood
6 - Prior
7 - Flintoff
8 - Swann
9 - Broad
10 - Onions
11 - Andersen
12th Man - Panesar

Australia:
1 - Katich
2 - Hughes
3 - Ponting
4 - Clarke
5 - Hussey
6 - Watson
7 - Haddin
8 - Johnson
9 - Lee
10 - Siddle
11 - Clark or Hauritz
12th Man - Clark or Hauritz

I wouldn't be surprised to see Sidebottom get the nod ahead of Onions though.

Was reading somewhere that the pitch has been turning sideways lately, if that is the case I would have Rashid in for Onions/Sidebottom.

Well apparently both sides are having trouble deducing what the pitch is actually gonna do. till, though it's the first test and selctors will go for experience combined with recent prowess, meaning that the likes of Panesar, Onions, Hauritz, and Hilfenhaus will probably miss out regardless of how much turn there is.

I agree Rafa, and I'm hoping Rashid gets he nod.

For one he's a leggie, two, he's an unknown quantity to the Aussies, and three, Panesar was spanked to all territories last time the two sides met and goes too defensive when things aren't going his way.

The Cardiff Pitch has been taking spin on day one of the county games, so it's a must i think for 2 spinners.

Yeah i'd go for Adil as well, allthough i think the selectors will go for the conservative pick in Monty (Onions looks like the player to miss out). Rashid is a star in the making, not only will he be a top draw bowler, but he'll be a more than useful batsman too (he's allready got a few 1st class tons to his name).

One slight positive regarding Englands chances, Hauritz took 1 -160 (38 overs) in the tour match last week.

And another thing, why is all the build up referring to when England won, and ignoring that last time they got hammered (5-0 I believe?)

I don't follow cricket at all so may be missing something obvious, but why are England and Australia playing in Wales?
It's the England & Wales cricket board, the team should be renamed accordingly too. Any ground under the boards control that can meet the required standards, can in effect bid to host Test matches.

Because the last series was in Australia not in the UK.

Therefore it's null and voided good and proper.

England will play 2 spinners at Cardiff.

So, who will lose out then if Rashid or Panesar plays? Sidebottom?

I'm not so sure.

Yeah Sidebottom or Onions will be the players to miss out i think.

This is the test team imo (it's also the team named to play today):

Andrew Strauss (captain)
Alastair Cook
Ravi Bopara
Kevin Pietersen
Paul Collingwood
Matt Prior
Andrew Flintoff
Stuart Broad
Graeme Swann
James Anderson
Monty Panesar

Steve Harmison will get recalled into test side squad once we move onto the quicker wickets. He's playing against the Aussies today and he's bowling exceptionally well at present (6-6-1)

good that both hughes and ponting failed and that Harmo bowled well. He does offer something different from the other bowlers, that steep bounce he can get is awesome when he gets it right.

Brett Lee's bowled himself into the starting side after yesterday's 5-47 against the Lions.

He's lost a lot of his pace, but if he can swing it both ways like he did yesterday, then he could cause problems.

Unfortunately he hasn't. He was bowling at 93-94 MPH consistently yesterday on a very slow pitch.

SH bounces out Hughes again. The talk is that maybe Harmison is bowling himself into contention for the 1st test.

I hope he's selected.
Cook, Strauss, Bopara, Pietersen, Collingwood, Flintoff, Prior, Broad, Swann, Harmison, Anderson.

England Squad... No GB Harmison.

No prizes for guessing the two to miss out come Wednesday... Freddie & Bell.

England squad:
Andrew Strauss (captain),
Alastair Cook,
Ravi Bopara,
Kevin Pietersen,
Paul Collingwood,
Matt Prior,
Andrew Flintoff,
Stuart Broad,
Graeme Swann,
Jimmy Anderson,
Monty Panesar,
Ian Bell,
Graham Onions.

Am I missing something? Why the fuck would Flintoff miss out?

I may be wrong, but whats his bowling/batting figures like for the season? I think they've included him for fear factor. Onions has been on fire for Durham, hence why I think he'll get the nod.

That said, if the aussies maul England in the 1st test, I expect Freddie to play in the 2nd.

Flintoff if fit is a 100% nailed on starter.

The only selection up for debate, is wether they play Monty instead of Onions.

Edit:

It's been confirmed that Flintoff will bat at 7 and Prior at 6.

I think if Flintoff is upright and less than 3/4 pissed he will be in our starting XI come the first test.

He is a talisman, and one of only a couple of our players the Aussies fear.

I agree about Onions' form, but he is only a chance if we only play one spinner, and even then I believe Sidebottom is a more likely choice.

Sidebottom has been left out of the squad mate. So for the 1st test anyway its out of the 13 names listed above.
