I’m not even a scouser and get called a robber wherever I go, because of my accent.. That’s a 'rascist' stereotype whatever way you look at it and I don’t give really give a toss..

I bet Divock Origi doesn’t either. I am betting he’s laughing his head off...

That's being said.. it was Niaeve of whoever put that banner up, not to expect some sort of backlash..

In much the same way as I hate the fact the Allez and Stevie G song both contain the word fuck so I can't teach them to my daughter, I also hate the fact that I have to worry about her seeing a banner with a big cock on it. Grow the fuck up.

I'm not personally offended, no. But I can see why people would be. And denouncing somebody's offence to a damaging racial stereotype as virtue signalling or 'PC gone mad' (which isn't to say that those things don't exist) basically dismisses their experience and prevents any progress being made.
 
In the current climate hanging that poster up was a daft risk to take, but I'm far from sure that turning it into a major incident is going to help the cause of good race relations. I'm not black but I am Jewish by race, I've been on the receiving end of anti-Semitism in my time and - though not all Jewish or Jewish-descended people agree with me - I'm convinced that simply treating it with the contempt it deserves has been WAY more effective as a response than making a controversy of it every time it reared its head.

Partly because of that, I'm also uneasy about facile assumptions regarding how everyone who's targeted must feel about it, or about responding to it. A short while ago Durham and Gough on TalkSh!te, having spent the previous five minutes or so virtue-signalling like mad about racism in football. asked Paul Parker (who's co-commentating on the ManUre game this evening) whether he'd have walked off if he'd been the target of racial abuse. They were clearly expecting him to join in with what they'd been saying and were equally clearly surprised when he made it clear in the strongest terms that he would absolutely not have considered doing so, not even if his teammates did. As far as he was concerned he was living the dream as a professional footballer and he was not going to let a few oafish blowhards spoil it for him. It struck me while I was listening to him that that approach, and listening to men like Paul Parker standing up for that approach, would do infinitely more to consign racism to the dustbin of history than all the virtue-signalling in the world.
 
Don't see what's wrong with it. Sure it perpetuates a stereotype but it's all in good fun.
Save the anger for other things.

Of course the context is his performances, but equally of course, there's a quick and free association to his private area, because of stereotypes. I don't see anyone talking about Salah's you know what. I'm diagnosing the situation with a very light form of unconscious racism, but with no major animus, so let's learn and move on. Case closed.

I just wish people like you, whose posting is interesting - and a times challenging* - would understand this on other levels ... The reason I say that is I find so many people who take this stance actively - a famous example is LeBron James, who 'slipped' and said something that are extremely offensive to another minority group and 'pretended' it's not that offensive with a meaningless apology ** (when if something similar had been said about blacks, his attitude would have been extremely different).

* I think some of what you say is misguided, or should I say I don't agree with how you phrase it, but otherwise, a lot of it 'works' for me
** Not talking about China obviously - that is entirely money driven.
