No. I'm arguing from the perspective of the actual people involved, and what did happen between them. You're arguing from the perspective of theoretical people you have invented, and then played out what could have happened on the basis of your theory. I understand this game very well because I still am the best god damn scientist in the city.

What you and your wife fail to take into account is if your theoretical people actually existed, by virtue of their existence they will look at what actually happened between people, and not be offended, or realise the offence they felt in the fist place was for no reason. If you are happy to accept there was no racism intended or implied by the banner (hopefully you're not so utterly brainwashed as to disagree), then what on god's green earth, what possible mechanism do you suppose, will make any other human being consider that banner propagates a racial stereotype (whatever propagation means in this context).
