There's no smoke without fire and there's rumors of Barca going after Courtois in the summer ... and yet again, another story linking us to Ter Stegen ...

Barcelona goalkeeping plans generate debate. Two great goalkeepers made to share the competitions between them. While Claudio Bravo seems more of a first-choice, chosen in La Liga, Ter Stegen feels like his train is leaving the station without him. The German is happy in a team where he's had the chance to win titles, but he wants more. He has received three offers in recent weeks, two from the Premier League, to be a first choice starter at top level teams. Ter Stegen is unsure what to do, because to leave he would have to demand to go publicly and to walk away from Barcelona would hurt him. At the club they are clear - they will not sell him. Key weeks are coming up where Barcelona's goal is concerned.

The offers from England - said to be from Manchester City and Liverpool - are high. They are offering to double his salary. They are numbers that go over 20 million euros for the transfer fee. The goalkeeper is thinking carefully about this. But to leave, he would have to demand to do so. His agent has spoken several times with Barcelona. Ter Stegen thought this might be his year, but Lucho opted just to play him in the cups again.

Barcelona are unwilling to sell him for any less than the 80 million euro release clause in his contract. The coaches believe he has everything needed to be Barcelona's goalkeeper for the next decade, and he won't be easy to replace. They hope he will understand his situation and see the future is bright for him. But at the moment, Bravo has the full confidence of Claudio Bravo, and because he is a veteran and speaks the language, has more weight in the squad.

Ter Stegen signed for Barcelona thinking he would be first choice, but ended up accepting his cup roles because of his youth. Now he thinks his adaption has finished and his moment has arrived. The choice is whether to stay and fight for minutes in the best team in the world or start for a Premier League work in progress. In January he felt left out, not picked for the Club World Cup, but towards the end of the season he is more important again, as the Champions League[/article]

Replacing Mignolet with Ter Stegen would be akin to me replacing my 8 year old Citroen with a new shiny BMW 5 Series.

Completely mental, utterly unbelievable, & amazing all wrapped into one.

Hence my disbelief in this happening. It's the hope that gets you.

The input from anyone who has seen Ter Stegen play is that he really isn't all that. So I don't know what to think about this.

Ter Stegen - when I watched Barca last year - was solid. Excellent shot stopper, and controlled his area decently (which isn't really a necessity much with Barca it seems).

I remember when De Gea signed for the Mancs ... He made quite a few clangers in his first year, struggled and within a year, excellent. I think you'd see something similar with Ter Stegen (though he wouldn't get to De Gea's level imo)

He's very very good with his feet - that's all I know. He's supposedly not very commanding at crosses and the like, which could be a problem in England.

He's not great there - though it's rare to see Barca (bar in Europe) getting targeted that way in Spain (normally just counter).

My only response to that would be that he'll either improve that facet (like De Gea) or struggle

De Gea's 6'3, whereas Ter Stegen is 6'1 so that's an obvious handicap there in that respect.

Well, football doesnt't do wingspans, but Ter Stegen generally looks small, whereas De Gea looks to have really good length.

Wingspan is key for a goalkeeper to be commanding.

What about his jumping ability or vertical as they'd call it in the States ?

Yeah, he's small for a goalkeeper, which is a problem in this league, for myriad, obvious reasons. That said, Lloris is about the same height, and he's done pretty well.

I'd probably take pepe back at this point, anything above that is a bonus this summer .

How fucking good was Reina !?

He was great, apart from his last season, when he was fucking useless.
He got found out, every Tom dick and harry went for the near post, and they would score every time..

Used to proper wind me up...

Still, even then he was still a better keeper the Mingolet..

So people are getting excited about a player who is awful at crosses.

Sounds perfect for us.

Also barca seem to rotate their keeper regularly?

Reina was the best keeper we had since Clem for the first years, then he lost his desire, got a bit fat, and needed a move. Having watched him a few times for Napoli this season he looks lean, keen and back to his best. Shame it wasn't here.

'He got found' out implies he wasn't once great Jono. Pepe in his pomp was excellent.

The Telegraph reporting that City are close to signing both him and Gundogan.

That doesn't make sense, they're not exactly flush for English players and have Joe Hart in goal. So they'd buy Ter Stegen for their bench or bin off Hart? Not likely.

It's possible that Guardiola has doubts about Hart, and wants to bring in some genuine competition. Certainly Ter Stegen is considered very good with his feet, and Guardiola had the luxury of another great sweeper-keeper in Neuer.

Maybe he wants that type for his tiki-taki-wiki-waki bollocks vision.

I doubt Ter Stegen would leave Barca where he shares goal keeping duties to share roles with Joe Hart or be his understudy. I presume if he moves it would be to a club where he would be installed as the #1 keeper.
