Teixeira's future

Not really sure what to make of it. Seems like Klopp would like to keep him, but the player isn't too sure he should stay. Can't blame Teix really, since he's not been given any chances since breaking through in 13/14. Shame if we can't retain him. It's just stupid that the contract has been allowed to run down to this stage, yet again.

Klopp told his post-match press conference: “I like Joao, as a person he's a really nice guy and he's a good footballer.

“Of course players like him need matches, and if you can't get it where you are it should not be my decision.

“It's not allowed to be three or four years a substitute in this age, you have to play. I would like to work with him longer because it's only four months and I see his big jumps in development.

“You see tonight he deserved a goal really, he worked hard, it was really man football he played, was defensively strong, good moments in offense.”

But Klopp said there was no guarantee Teixeira would stay at Anfield.

“We are always in talks, we have to speak about it, see what he wants, see what we want. It has to fit in the end, all players can't stay here. Sometimes you have to leave, I'm not sure it's the situation for Joao.

“He did really well in the Championship, came back and did not have the best position but a little bit better since I've been here.”

I'm not fussed, basically if he's good enough he'll stay and play his way into the first team if not then no great loss.

I would rather play him now than Lallana.

Come to think of it, I would rather play Ojo or Smith ahead of Lallana too.

He deserves a go in the first team. We've got him banging on the door and more senior players justifiably in need of being dropped. We're not going to learn anything new about Milner, Allen, Lallana, Lucas, etc and we're struggling for goals and creativity. If ever there was a sink or swim opportunity, this is it. THEN have a look at his future.

Not just dropping, the likes of Firmino and Lallana have been playing non-stop for about 3 months now. A big part of why they've struggled is that they simply haven't had enough rest, or enough good players around them to succeed.

Teixeira should play just to give them a breather if nothing else.

I can't quite explain why Klopp didn't give him a chance in the PL games. After Coutinho got injured, I was sure he would get some playing time, but somehow Klopp it never materialized.

Echo:

Joao Carlos Teixeira is hoping contract talks with Liverpool FC reach a successful conclusion as he looks to build on his classy performance against Exeter City.

The Portuguese attacking midfielder, who celebrated his first senior goal for the Reds in the 3-0 FA Cup third round replay win at Anfield, is out of contract this summer.

Negotiations over a new deal are ongoing as the 23-year-old battles to prove to manager Jurgen Klopp that he has the qualities required to play a big role in the club’s future.

“We are in conversations at the moment,” Teixeira told the ECHO.

“My contract runs out at the end of this season. I want to stay but we will see what happens.

“I don’t want to think about my future too much right now. I just want to play football. I want to enjoy this moment and try to build on it.

“I just have to keep working hard and keep doing my best in training. Whenever chances come along like this to impress Jurgen Klopp, it’s up to me to show him that I deserve more chances.”

He seems a good player and along with Smith should be rotated into the first team squad. If he gets 5 - 10 starts between now and the end of the season in all comps id be surprised if he didnt stay.

The squad is paper thin at this point Klopp has to start making use of the younger players at his disposal. The likes of Lallana Can Clyne Moreno are starting too many games

Might have to revise my MOM ratings based on this, Teixeira was influential + a goal. That cross for Benteke was inch perfect, should have really been an assist.

Yes. He's surprisingly tenacious in defence too. He's definitely worth a game here and there.

I thought he was excellent the other night, really mature performance, you can see why hes highly rated. Always seems to be bale to make space for himself to pick a pass.

He should get a game in the prem, but let's not get too excited after all we did play a team with aging professionals and semi-professional players that play in the 4th tier of the English league.

Our U21 keeper, Fulton, has gone on loan to Portsmouth. This is actually bad news for Teixeira I believe, where a Europa League place is concerned.

We're allowed to register three new names in List A for the knockout phase, but right now we've got 4 candidates to choose from: Ward (played for Aberdeen in the playoff rounds, still eligible), Caulker, Flaganan and Teixeira. None of these guys qualify to be in List B.

Gomez and Ings will obviously be the two names removed from List A. The question is who goes in? Everyone has a pretty good case for inclusion:

-- Ward: with Bogdan's status questioned now and with Fulton going on loan, we're short of a 3rd keeper (unless we go with someone like Firth or even George - those two will go into List B)

-- Flanagan - we don't have any senior full back backup; he'd take up one of the hitherto vacant club-trained spots in List A

-- Caulker - with Gomez out, Skrtel still out for a while more and the fitness record of the remaining CBs, it might make sense to take him along

-- Teixeira -- with Ings gone, we're short an attacking player, so again, a logical choice.

I just hope he isn't unlucky again this time, although I think it's likely to happen again given that the other players are in positions where we're not deep (in terms of cover available from List B), whereas we're a lot more stacked in a wide attacking spot if we need to draft in someone from List B (e.g. Kent and Ojo).
