Swansea Post Match - just feck off

I feel like this season we always lose when I'm not watching. I've somehow missed all three league losses and the Southampton loss.

We dont have a like for like player to Manè and its costing us big time in terms of how the team is set up.
Really poor that we havent adressed that.
The real problem is in defending and that has been obvious for some time now.

Joel Matip

We have not lost a game this season when he plays..

Sadio Mane

We have not won a game in the league this season when he doesn't play..

That is the glaring Stat that is part of our problems right now...

The problem is the defending not the attacking, and that has been obvious for some time now.

Yeah, the defending is obviously the problem aswell. But we're struggeling with the changes we've made to compensate with Mané being out. We dont have anyone in the squad who can bring that pace and directness bar him, and maybe Origi but he isnt a winger/wide forward.

If you score two goals at home, against a bottom three side, you really ought not to be losing. Problem is that one defence was no better than Swansea's. Run at iyr central midfielders often enough, and the centre inevitably folds.

Depends on the situation imo. In this case they scored two before we woke up.

Yes, we always seem to play teams into form. Swansea was is and is gash, yet, was allowed to lead at Anfied. The attitude of many players stank, especially the defenders.

I'm the opposite. I've missed many of the matches that we won but managed to watch all the ones where we lost or have been poor.

Just a 1 off.

We'll destroy Chelsea next week.

Then lost to Hull the following week.

Don't know about destroying them, but they're less likely to sit back and do nothing all game, so we will probably have a half decent chance of a win.

Our defending leaves a lot to be desired, of that there can be no doubt.

However we gave a team struggling at the bottom of the table a lot of hope and encouragment by being so pedestrIan and one paced in the attacking third. No urgency, no pressing, no upping the tempo and all other aspects we've seen from this Liverpool side in the opening stages of the season. That shit scares the life out of teams especially ones like Swansea and by being so poor at the sharp end gave them so much belief they could pull off a result.

It was kinda expected wasn't it ?

That we might eventually lose steam after all that intense running and gegenpressing earlier this season.

No team could sustain that all season. Which begs the next question - do we have a plan B when gegenpressing don't work so well anymore or when your team don't have the legs to press no more like they used to ?

The problem was everything was just too slow. Extra touches when not needed. No one making runs. Too much passing across the back line. Both henderson and can dropping deep to get the ball.

Really really poor. Only firmino gets any credit.

A draw in that game would be good, but I struggle to care given our loss.
City have bossed Spurs from start to finish in the first half. Spurs with some very poor defending and Dier especially has been horrendous.

I'm sure there's going to be plenty more discussion around this performance and the usual blood-drenched autopsy after a result like this. We lost to the bottom team in the league. At home. And conceded three times.

This is not an anomaly. Klopp has overseen far too many abysmal collapses for it to be ignored. We've discussed at length the need for a quality goalkeeper. We all know that we won't ever win a title with a defensive record like this. We've all banged on incessantly about needing more defenders and defensive midfielders. Everybody is aware that we are ruinously brittle defensively

But the lack of a controlling, calming presence in this side is also crucial, as is the alarmingly flat and pedestrian play when our only quick player is missing. And who do we look to collectively to take on responsibility and assert our superiority in the opposition mentally and also physically? There's nobody.

Anyway, RAAAAAATINGS!

Mignolet (5) Looked like a trespasser in his own area, failing to dominate or control his area, and typically vulnerable on crosses. Perhaps not to blame for the goals, but great keepers save some of those

Clyne (4) A stumbling, uncertain display, with some awful passing

Lovren (5) He is the epitome of inconsistency. A great tackle or valiant clearance will be followed by a brainless pass, or missed header, or shanked clearance

Klavan (4) Llorente is a quality striker on his day, and this was one, but he made Klavan look like Nicky Tanner. At times he resembled an irate farmer trying to chase nimble trespassers off his farm. He can fuck off, frankly. Nowhere near good enough.

Milner (6) Looked heavy-legged at times, but still put in a decent effort and was our best outlet on the left. Needs competition though

Henderson (5) Improved after a terrible first half, but he simply didn't do enough to control or influence the game. Which he isn't good at anyway. Passing was poor at times and overall mediocre

Can (4) clump clump clump. Always wants to go forward, which is great, but does so with all the alacrity of a deep-sea diver kicking a lead ball along the bottom of the Mariana Trench

Wijnaldum (5) Wooooooo-ooooo-oooo. That's a ghost noise. Which is about as scary and impactful as he gets. One or two lovely touches and one great delivery, but he disappears more often than a scally drug-dealer

Coutinho (6) Not at his mercurial best, and denied space and time to make the most of any possession, but good to see him back

Lallana (6) Play him in the midfield three. He tried hard and had one wonderful effort saved, but not enough threat or pace

Firmino (8) I had a feeling he'd score one or two today, and he delivered at last. A quality striking display, with two good goals. It's a shame he was so badly let down by his team-mates

This Spurs performance is making me feel a bit better, even if it is fucking City and Guardiola, who I despise.

Mind you City are hardly miles behind us.

Dele Ali scores again

Very annoying that, To get back to 2-2 from 2 down and still lose is fucking criminal. Our defensive issues the last 6 or so seasons still persist and really looks like it will never change unless the players are changed, all of them. Matip is new to that back 4 and no surprise we look much better with him around. I've also no idea why Can is still getting picked, especially at home against a team set to park the bus, we don't need him, Gini and Hendo playing at home against the dross. Mane missing is killing us not just cos he's gone but others being shifted around to compensate. Play someone there and leave the rest of the team as it was, Lallana in midfield, Firmino as the striker.

A lot of lads look tired too, we really need to be spending some money but we won't, again! I've no doubt we'll beat Chelsea but after that today it'll help someone else challenge for the league rather than us.

Spurs could nick avdraw here now. Good game this but as with every other game it feels pointless when we have dropped points.

What's frustrating is that I was willing to say, "ok, Klopp needs time to get this defence right", after how terrible it became under Rodgers, but we're still in that situation where I feel like we're going to concede everytime the opposition gets near our area, or have a setpiece/corner. Our possession game and high pressing takes the pressure off the defence and that seems to be where we've cut a corner on our defensive woes, but we're still as brittle and ridiculous as we were, as soon as we are exposed.

Matip is a fine signing and I really like Milner and Clyne, but what have we generally improved on defensively as a team and as a backline? The only improvement seems to be that the team defends from the front and avoids questions being asked of the defenders too much. Once that's breached, it's same old same old.

Am i the only one wondering if we're suffering the consequences of all those distance covered stats?

Maybe a combination of that and our opponents finding a pretty straightforward way to play us - camp in their own half and take advantage of our defensive weakness when it presents itself.
