Yeah… I think VdB is gone, but €10m feels cheap. I suppose Mainz can’t afford a bigger fee.

Not sure he will want to stay around to sit on the bench. Otherwise VVD, Q, Konate, SVDB and Gomez to come in for emergency should be enough.

Agreed, but on the other I think this is one of the few times the price tag represents the actual market value.
We'd probably be paying double that if we were the ones buying VDB.

Still, feels like we shouldn't sell and instead give the kid a chance.
However, this feels like it's a case of him wanting to stay in Germany and play instead of coming back and being 4/5th choice.

Just for the love of God be smart about it.
£10 mill? Sure... But add a 35% future profit clause to it as well or something.

I’d be pretty certain we’ll load up clauses if he’s leaving cheaply.

I tend to agree about giving him a chance, but I think, the issue is his ability on the ball and whether he’s good enough there to play in a Slot team.

Added to that, I’ll be shocked if we don’t spend big on a CB to partner Virgil and to potentially be the lead defender when he goes.

reading that makes new think he could/would be the new nat phillips

we need to be inserting all the buybacks and sell ons
Aren't these clauses Edwards practically invented? 😛

Personally hope we keep the lad and have a closer look during pre season but it's still not clear if we're powerless to letting him leave. Can we suddenly refuse if they trigger a buy option? If the ball is in their court, he's gone.

Liverpool have entered into the race 'forcefully' in the last few hours for Leny Yoro, according to Gianluca Di Marzio. Real Madrid and Manchester United are also reportedly interested.

I know you can't go on youtube alone, but he looks pretty average. I don't get the hype. Quansah looks just as competent. Unless they are looking at Van Dijk long term replacement.

I think it’s good that he’ll be given a chance to impress, but it’s also good for us to value him at £20m rather than selling cheap.

Our biggest defensive issue is having a consistent partner for Virgil. If we think we have the players already to do that, great - it means we can spend money elsewhere.

I like Quansah, I’m just not sure he’s ready to be a first choice starting CB in a title challenging side.

I think Konate is good enough and ready - but he’s just not fit consistently enough to rely upon - so he’s a very good secondary option.

I also think Gomez is very underrated, and would do a very good job - despite the SCM meltdown every time he plays at CB - again, I’d hesitate because his injury record isn’t great and he’s also very good at covering different positions. For me he’s worth his weight in gold as a squad player - he ticks every box needed - but I’d hesitate at having him as the regular starting CB alongside Virgil.

VDB is vey unlikely to be ahead of Quansah, but I’m more than happy for him to be back up.

So it all boils down to this - is Quansah good enough to be Virgil’s regular CB partner - and I mean this version of Virgil - the Nathan’s good but not quite as good as the one that was mauled by a T-Rex.

For me - nope, we need to chuck some cash on a right sided Virgil that will be our defensive leader when Virgil departs, which could be at any point over the next 12 months.

If that means a youngster is scarified - VDB is likely to be the one.

S VDB is also classed as a home grown player, so worth thinking about the quotas needed. I say keep him and still buy Yoro. Will be a long season next year with the new champions league format as well as cup games and with injuries because no doubt Gomez and Ibou will suffer them it's worth keeping him in the team. He's had a brilliant campaign for Mainz.

He’s awful
He has 16 assists in the Championship.
This is the first time we are going into season that I am not so worried about signings... We have a structure now, and a squad as it stands that could easily challenge top 4.
