Summer rebuild 2023

I've seen a number of reports that Arteta wants him for the Arse. Whether this is alongside Rice or instead of him, nobody's saying.

Jurgen Klopp: "A really busy period hopefully starts now in a different area of the game. "I'm more than happy to do that."

Really exciting summer ahead. Looking forward to it.

yea that’s fine, we have two older players who were absolutely shite this season and an injured child with a handful of first team games to his name

back to last summers thinking so soon, sounds money related as usual

With Hendo and Fabs we have committed more than 300K plus in wages (most likely close to 350K) per week for the next three years. No way FSG will sanction another DM purchase with those two salaries hanging around our neck. We have to hope that the new midfielders we bring in will have the legs to compensate for Fabs and Hendo's declining physicality every season. Hopefully, someone from Spain or Italy will offer us a way out for Fabs.

So where’s all the money coming from for all these signings? I don’t get it.

@Beamrider

Do we have a £200m overdraft facility that was used for the stand redevelopment that’s mostly unused since we paid it down., that we could use to fund some transfers?

The caveat being, we need to balance additional spending with income, which means we’ll need to bring in a significant amount of income from sales in future seasons (ie not selling someone old for £10m), while also limiting future transfers - though we could probably splurge a little and make a loss in one season.

Or I reading that all wrong?

Yeah, I don't think that will happen if they get Rice.
Would he go to Chelsea? Can they sign anyone? I guess he can go to City?
He’ll go wherever the money is so yes either Chelsea or 1 of the Manc clubs I would’ve thought.

The tinkering in the last couple of months of the season feels more like the "back 3 solution" Rodgers spent so much time crowing to the press and fans about before his season ended by being thrashed by Stoke, than Klopp's quiet evolution into that relentless machine between winning the CL and the league. I can't help but feel that Klopp is bereft of and maybe needs new ideas, in addition to new faces on the playing staff.

It’s a fair point, but I don’t know whether I’d go that far.

The tweak seems sensible, in that we have developed into a “possession team”, albeit one that doesn’t mind going long as well. It’s all really about getting Trent more time & space, while covering in behind.

The key is, to absolutely no-one’s surprise, is the 2 more forward midfield positions you’d normally see filled by a mixture of Hendo, Thiago or Keita - you can add the “senior” backup of Milner & Ox to that.

They’re just either both good enough or too injury prone.

Jones has shown he can come in and fill the left role, but Harvey is likely suffering from that ling layoff and hasn’t developed enough consistency (amongst other things). BadgerTits is also too young to be entirely relied upon, although offers great cover.

Not buying 2 first team starters for these midfield roles this summer would be beyond a disaster - and it would likely end Klopp’s reign as manager.

Then there’s Fabs - I think there is merit in the notion that he won’t have as bad a season if the other 2 midfield roles are filled with quality - but he needs competition.

Gakpo’s willingness to work as a false nine for the team is good - Salah, at his worst will still get you goals and assists and that leaves Jota, Diaz & Nunez fighting over the left side as a consistent starting position next season.

There’s question marks about Virgil & Robbo, but not critical ones and Alisson is still pretty much the best keeper around.

The other issue is Konate’s fitness.

2 quality midfielders and things are very different - add a DM and potentially a CB and we’re in good shape. Everyone else (bar City) has problems to address too.

City have some issues themselves. De Bruyne will be 32 next month and this season has shown that his body is about to break down. Gundogan will be 33 and look set to leave on a free. Mahrez and Walker will be 33.

When Yaya was kicked out, we thought they'd drop off ...
When they lost David Silva, we thought they'd drop off ...
When Kun started to get injured more and more, we thought they'd drop off ...
When Fernandino was shifted to CB, we thought they'd drop off ...
When Kompany was moved on, we thought they'd drop off ...
When you have ridiculous wealth, and can pay players double/triple be it cleanly or not, you won't drop off, even if they have a shit manager.

It's possible, but IMHO the least likely explanation for what's happening (or, maybe more to the point, not happening) at the moment. Far more likely in my view is that this season Klopp's had to make the best of what he's got because of tight financial parameters laid down and enforced by the owners. Things keep getting posted on here pointing to Klopp's references to e.g.not needing more midfield players, and taking those simply at face value, which to my mind is naïve in the extreme. He's said those things because his bosses have lowered the boom on spending and will expect him to be loyal to their approach in public. I'm a great deal less ready than some on here to imagine that my footballing insight is greater than Jürgen Klopp's.

Rumours we are looking at bringing in Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig.
Captain of the Hungarian national team. Attacking mid, right wing.

I'd be happy with that. He impressed me against England and has done in other games for Hungary. I think he could do well in the Prem.

It's a bit more complicated than that. Firstly, yes we do have a £200m facility. Per the last published accounts (May 2022) £88m was drawn, leaving £112m available.
However, the reality is that football cash flow is very lumpy and the position at the year end doesn't reflect what happens during the year. So, for example, media revenue comes in a few instalments, not evenly through the year. Ticketing income comes substantially up-front (season tickets), commercial revenue comes largely up-front (the major sponsor items will be paid up-front for each season, but merchandise and other lines will accrue across the season) and then transfer instalments (in and out) will generally be July/August and January.
All of that means that the balance drawn down will move significantly up and down throughout the season. So whilst the accounts suggest there is £112m available to draw, if there is (say) a £60m adverse swing from timing of payments at any point in the year, then only £52m of that total is truly available to fund extra spending.
As far as the Annie Road is concerned, there will still be some significant spend over summer to get it done. I suspect we will have asked for our last fixture to be away from home (and a good chance we may be away for the first one or two games next season) to allow the contractors as much time as possible to finish off whatever else they need to do - Anfield will be a frenzy of construction activity this summer and that will incur a chunky cost,
Obviously, against that, we'll only be spending on the stand for a couple of months, as opposed to throughout the year, but that saving in cash out will probably be more than compensated for by reduced revenue (Europa v Champions League). The final factor is that we should see increased revenue from the stand, but probably not the kind of up-tick that we got from the Main Stand since the expansion isn't as significant in capacity terms and there's not as much corporate. So I don't think that for this year the end of that project, combined with the loss in European revenue, will have a huge impact.
Finally, I don't think we necessarily paid for the stand out of the facility (and if we had done, we'd need to "repay" that draw on the debt), I think we paid for it by cutting back on transfer spend (hence our complaints about the squad depth).
So I still think that if we want to go on a major spending spree then we need to raise funds from sales or investment. I'm not convinced the latter is on and given how quickly we pulled out of the Bellingham deal it looks more like a mid-spend summer to me with a reluctance to sell any of our more bankable assets.
And as I said somewhere else the other day, the fact that Klopp was suggesting some delays before we sign perhaps indicates that we may need to make some mid-level sales first so we know how much we have to play with before we embark on a spending spree.

Here's where I'm at with this summers transfers...

I cannot see Liverpool signing anyone of real note. The players bought in will be cut price players. We will not spend the the money what is needed to be spent on real "Quaility" players. We will look to do it on the cheap, "Unless" some team like Real' or PSG puts in a "Coutinho type bid" for Trent.

So this summer look to us to be getting one or two cut price players
