I remember reading somewhere that Subotic was the only player Klopp personally endorsed (bought from Mainz, Klopp's previous team) during his stint at BVB. Other player purchases done by Zorc the general manager cum technical director.

Probably because of his injury problems. Papastathopoulos was bought two years ago as back up to Hummels and Subotic and he's been basically playing regularly because one of them is "always" injured.

A word of warning, Subotic is not the player he was before. There's a reason why he's out of favour.
I personally don't think it's a good idea to buy him.

It's doesn't make sense to write off a player at 26, especially a centre-back. He has shown himself to be a top-class player for several seasons; in fact there was a strong argument that he made Hummels look a little better than he actually is. Whatever his problems, they are likely to be temporary and there is no reason why he can't turn it around.

Papastathopoulos has been out injured a lot aswell though.

Writing off someone of that quality at 26 is a bit bizarre if you ask me. I'd be cautious given his injury record. But quality wise I wouldnt.

His out-of-favour-ness has to do with the back injury that has sidelined him for all but 2-3 matches since August. Pass.
