I saw that interview where Carra was talking about Suarez, and saying if he keeps up playing the way he is, he might be classed as the greatest ever to have played for us (on-field only).

And I've also heard the unfair comment I think, about only judging players on the trophies they win, like not comparing Messi to Maradona because he's not dragged the argies to win the world cup singlehandedly. I think that's daft, it's like saying you can't compare Gerrard and Viera, because one has won the league and world cup.

Just based on their on-field performances, if we take both in their prime, who would you rather have in your team / who is better?

For me, even though Gerrard is the better man, I think I'd take Suarez. I think Suarez as a player is more consistent than Gerrard since he's been here. Gerrard has got us out of the shit more times than I can remember, but he has had stages of his career, where he's not been brilliant for periods, and he's been guilty of swanning around. Whereas with Suarez, when he's on the pitch, he very very rarely gives less than 100%, you may get the odd rare game, but not a run of them.

Suarez is close but it's Gerrard for me. I remember watching a young Gerrard fill in at right back for a few games. He was stunning there let alone in his 'normal' position. Just because he was so versatile and as good a match winner as I've ever seen.

Depends on which way you look at it, at his best Suarez is (just a bit) better, but Gerrards best lasted for a long time, Suarez has only really stepped up that extra level this year.

So, at the minute it's still Gerrard, but if Suarez keeps this form up for another couple of seasons, then it'll be him.

Let's see if Suarez does it against the best teams in Europe consistently, and on Cup Final days when we're getting beat.

A bit harsh, I suspect that despite his well talked about shortcomings we'll miss a lot of what he brings to the table in the next few games.

I 'hope' the team proves you wrong. We seemed to step up to the plate before when we've had key players out in past seasons, and even have done earlier this season, I just hope we over the next few weeks.

Oh it's neck and neck on 7 votes each. I always thought 50% of the posters on here were clueless....

I don't think we've seen the best of Suarez tbh, b/c unlike Gerrard, he won't have a core around him (Carra, finnan, Hyypia, Reina, Masc, Alonso, Torres) that should have won the league.

It's very close now voting wise.

I think Suarez has more 'brilliance' but Gerrard has produced heroics for the club on a number of occasions when it really did matter.

For that, I'd go with Gerrard.

Do I detect a hint of sarcasm there Modo?
No, the reason I wrote"tough" is because, Gerrard has been successful in top level football a lot longer than Suarez, who spent half his career in Holland.
But ability-wize Suarez is pretty special. He's been mentioned along side Messi and Ronaldo for a few years.
I'm not really sure.

Gerrard.

It's not easy when you compare their individual attributes (although Gerrard's pace gives him the edge for me), but longevity wise Gerrard was world class from 2003ish to 2010ish and Suarez can't compete with that.

Gerrard, in his prime he won us games we should have lost and got us back into games with our backs to the wall.

I don't think Suarez has done enough of that yet. He's superb but I'm not totally convinced he can handle it as well when losing and frustration creeps in.

People talk about Surarez's sheer technical ability but nobody in world football could have scored that goal against West Ham. It was make believe stuff.

A bit harsh, I suspect that despite his well talked about shortcomings we'll miss a lot of what he brings to the table in the next few games.

Why is it harsh?

I'm not saying he's completely shit or offers nothing to side right now. It's just that watching him play like a shadow of his former self does make you reflect on what he used to be capable of. Arguably moreso than not having him in the team at all.
