It actually makes sense though. Borrell changed the philosophy of youth development at our club. There used to be an emphasis on making the kids tactically aware before anything, while Borrell's philosophy it seems is to develop other aspects of their game.. Skill on the ball, movement, passing etc. Which is why tons of exciting players come out of the continent while england have rarely developed fleet footed skillful players.
The kids can really learn about the game once they graduate the academy. Before that, just make them better footballers. I really like Borrell and I'd like to think Rodger's comments were in no way directed as criticism towards him.

I think you're right. I also think youth development should be about kids enjoying themselves, being comfortable on the ball. The tactical side can come in when the brain is mature enough to understand it. Let's face it, if you start with the tactical side then you're essentially saying "your skills aren't good enough so think your way around the problem"
 
Its more like reading way to much into his comments. Borrell has done a fantastic job, but Rodgers is trying to implement his tactics and style of play. Its got nothing to do with Borrell imho

I think you're looking at it the wrong way perhaps Macca, I think he was crediting the work of the players over the last two weeks and him pointing out that Sterling has listened and carried out the instructions well is what he seems to be getting at. It does come across as him blowing his own trumpet somewhat, but I think he's just saying that the system he's trying to introduce was shown a bit more yesterday, due to the work the players have put in.
 
Well, I can't believe anyone who's watched Sterling over the past year or so would claim he's only realised in the last two weeks those other (very basic) aspects of the game. And Borrell HAS encouraged players to mature tatically - Suso, in particular.

I'm with you. I never get the impression *at all* that Borrell and the other academy staff focus on technique at the expense of tactical awareness. And tbh I don't think Sterling has ever been a particularly immature or stupid player, and has become even less so over the last year. I think it was a stupid thing for Rodgers to say, and it wouldn't be the first time he's been wanting for tact.
 
Perhaps sterlings over exuberance caused him to play slightly like a headless chicken to begin with, and over the past 2 games hes calmed down a bit, causing Rodgers to say this as he's not watched him all last season
 
I get the feeling Sterling will get a chance under Rodgers, I hope so, it'll make up for the disappointment of Suso.
 
They're being watched, being coached, being encouraged. Like Gerrard said, it's up to them to do the rest.
 
Yeh, Pacheco could yet be a nice bonus squad player, which is great seeing as most had given up on the idea of him making it.
 
I'm surprised he's come back and looked good (granted, against average opposition)
