Sterling

Sterling is fucking ace, play the fucker at all opportunites. Makes Downing seem like a rhomboid spastic from the Delta Quadrant. I'd go so far as Downing as an amoebic nucleus of pus to Sterlings' coronation as the Creator of all life on all Worlds in all parallel universes ever created.

FACT.

Rodgers: "His strength for the goal was impressive - that was the thing that surprised me for such a slight guy". Hopefully he'll keep an open mind and think again about his prospects.

Agreed, I thought he was poor too, but I'm loathed to judge anyone on our first preseason game.
Exactly so Mark, he didn't play anywhere near as well as he can, but I still didn't think he was that bad anyway, a few things did not come off but he was lively and imaginative.
Regards

Too right. Players like sterling are always more likely to makes mistakes or lose the ball as they are the ones that try inventive things and try run at players. Well at least that's the way i see it.

Which is fine Barry, but people seem happy to try and throw Sterling, Pacheco and Suso in, we need to be clever and not over do it. It's great that they're willing to try things, and it's a damn sight better than watching Downing fluff around and do nothing, but a big problem at their age is their naivety, they DO give the ball away alot, which can be detrimental at this level. Shelvey looked good yesterday, he looked like an experienced pro at times and you could see the benefits of a season of football with him, but he too is still learning and made a couple of errors in possession. It's a learning curve for all of them, we just need to be careful with them too, just not overly protective.

Good start anyway, I was impressed with the second half side, I thought it was an attacking midfield that liked to pass the ball well, a few of them just showed their experience by over doing it sometimes and failing to beat the man or put in a ball into the danger zone. Made up for Morgan, nice to see him off the mark.

I didn't think Sterling played badly. I've noted in the past his weaknesses and they are still there - he wasn't under-performing, by his standards, THAT much - but he needs such chances to develop. Ibe, if we're being picky, had the weaker game, and was probably trying far too hard to impress by going for the predictable dribble into the box every time he got the ball, but he's another prospect I find really exciting. I think we're all agreed these players need careful encouragement, rather than Owen-style burn-outs, but I do think they will evolve most impressively, and speedily, if they do so 'in situ' with Rodgers advising them.

I thought he was good too gk, I think everyone is expecting him to be the next Pelé though because of the hype, he's only 17 though, still so young, it's quite amazing really.

I don't want to sound like I'm being picky, but a few people have gone over the top about his and Pacheco's performances. They played ok, well done, let's see what they do for the rest of pre-season and with a bit of luck we'll have something to think about for the first team. Just let's not act like they're the second coming, they're not, they're young decent prospects finding their feet.

Suso on the other hand.... 🙂

Harsh on pacheco. Sterling did well, but pacheco has matured ridiculously in recent years. If Morgan had played the first half rather than the positionally suspect Eccleston, then I think dani would have had an assist

Obviously though, 45min against Canadians doesn't mean Pl standard, but I'm cautiously optimistic

Yeah, like I said, it's hard to judge because of who the opposition were and it being early days in preseason. The most promising aspect is that they all like to keep it on the deck and try to pass it around. It'd be interesting to see a couple of these lads in a more experienced Liverpool side, with better players hopefully giving them a bit more confidence.

Everyone on the pitch played against Toronto. You can't just praise one player who did well and dismiss another player's performance who also did well against the same opposition.

At some point, hopefully, it'd be nice to see something like this:

----------------Reina-----------------
Johnson-Skrtel-Agger-Robinson
----------Lucas--Shelvey----------
----------------Suso-----------------
--Borini-----Suarez-----DP/RS--

I don't know what you're going on about Modo, judging them fairly and equally, I'd say Shelvey and Suso were probably two of the best players, Pacheco did reasonably well and I thought Sterling was below par, in comparison to some of the performances I've seen of him.

I don't recall going overboard about anyone, it was Toronto, it was our first friendly, it's early days and difficult to read much into that performance.

Well tbf we all need to chill out considering that it was Toronto.

Next up Roma.

Agreed. I think they'll both be fine. It's said often enough but it bears repeating that they're both so so young. Ibe in particular I've got a soft spot for, he just looks so technically sound. Not tricks and flashiness, just genuine class on the ball. He's like the anti-babel. I'm not sure exactly what sort of player he'll turn out - he's not your typical winger - but I'm confident he'll make it here. The crazy thing is he'll still be eligible for the nextgen games in 3 years time!

I agree with all that, but would also support a loan to Wigan, Swansea, Blackpool, Bolton for any of our young players. Those teams will all try to play football that is compatible with Rogers' approach and will likely see them get more experience than they will on our bench.

The actual loan thing is good, we're just shite at it because we send players to the wrong leagues. If he goes to a Premiership minnow, that will be more than ideal, we can see what he does on 'this' stage.
Couldn't have put it better myself.

Rodgers statement on loaning Sterling is only to temper the huge expectations. Raheem won't be going anywhere on loan. Mark my words!

Loan move: Sterling could be shipped out by Liverpool
Queens Park Rangers are plotting a move to bring wonderkid Raheem Sterling back to Loftus Road.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is contemplating sending the 17-year-old forward - the club's best prospect - on loan ahead of next season to get regular first-team experience.
And Rangers boss Mark Hughes wants to be at the front of the queue if Liverpool decide to let Sterling leave on a season-long loan. Liverpool are thought to be aware of QPR's interest.
The England Under 17 star left west London for Merseyside in 2010 after spending seven years at Rangers.
Since his arrival at Anfield, he has made three first-team appearances. He is currently on Liverpool's tour of North America, where he impressed against Toronto on Saturday.

by the looks of things rodgers is going to send out our best prospects on loan for the season for a place in the team next season, hope it doesnt backfire and cost us some of our talents, i think SCM would implode if sterling moved somewhere else permanently

If any talent leave on loan, there must be a guarantee of them getting regular first team football or else its a waste of time.

Agreed, though I think it's the truth. Sterling's always given the impression of being a bit brain dead when playing for the ressies, for all his talent.

It actually makes sense though. Borrell changed the philosophy of youth development at our club. There used to be an emphasis on making the kids tactically aware before anything, while Borrell's philosophy it seems is to develop other aspects of their game.. Skill on the ball, movement, passing etc. Which is why tons of exciting players come out of the continent while england have rarely developed fleet footed skillful players.
The kids can really learn about the game once they graduate the academy. Before that, just make them better footballers. I really like Borrell and I'd like to think Rodger's comments were in no way directed as criticism towards him.

I'm sure they weren't. He's just a manager who knows how to take credit for just about anything when it suits him. All top managers are the same.
