We under valued Suarez and I suspect this was part of our agreement the year before when he stayed. It should have really been painful for the buyer, because that's what buying one of the best players in the world feels like. Expensive. Sterling is a top tier young talent, that we don't want to let go. And I don't see, since we hold all the cards, why we should sell for a less than painful price. If $50M works for us, than say $60M publicly. Every small business owner knows this.
Only one person can be to blame for this situation, and it has to be the MD. Terrible negotiating overall if we settle for $40/45M.. If what Macca says is true, and of course it is, then WTF is this man doing in charge. They will end up buying total shit. We know this.

I wonder how we'd all feel if Rodgers was gone and we had Klopp with this happening. We sell sterling to get all those lovely players we're currently linked with and it looks like the new man making his mark. Or would sterling stay under Klopp? This is probably the wrong thread now I've written it.

£50m for a guy that can't shoot is a amazing offer which i would bite their hands off for. Plus Pellegrini has shown zero ability in developing any player at city so far. So the chances of sterling improving at city are very slim. If that £50 gets us asier illarramendi and firmino then we come out of the deal the better for it.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that at least some of the people that are happy with this, were happy selling Suarez too, and gave the same reason. The money is more than he's worth.

I can't imagine anyone (apart from Ross ) wanting Suarez gone.
I am not sure there was any Liverpool fan anywhere that was happy selling Suarez.
I think we've got a new strategy, normally we let it be known that we're into a single player to tip our opposition off so they can steal him from under our noses. This time round we've tapped up loads, so surely we'll have to snare one. Spurs and Chelski will have no idea who to bid for and who's the decoy.

I've noticed from his Sterling's season in the first team that I seem to rate him a lot more highly than most on the board and that's probably why I feel a little more downbeat about his departure than most.
For me it's got nothing to do with the fact that Rodgers is the manager, that we might not reinvest the money properly (though we probably won't) or that it makes us look like the middling Europa League club that we are (though that is depressing), it's that I really do think that Sterling is a fantastic player right now and could go on to be exceptional.
If you're of the opinion that he's not that good and can easily be replaced by someone for half the money we'll get for him or Ibe then yeah, selling him to City or whoever for a big wad of cash seems like a no-brainer.

Then we get to look back and say that this whole thing worked out pretty well for us despite being forced into it. I'm the exact same as you. I don't want to sell him. I think he's probably our best player. He's 20 and just won the Golden Boy European award. It's such a shame to lose him to a 'rival'. The only comfort is the fee we'll receive but I hope we actually improve the team as a whole by using the money wisely. Illarmendi, Firmino and Clyne for Sterling is a good swap. Whether that happens or not is massively up in the air.

I'm not sure too many disagree with you Keni, it's just for me it has become very doubtful that he'll fulfil his obvious huge potential at Anfield due to both his misguided actions and subsequent huge drop off in form. It just seems he's succumbed far too easily to the malevolent manoeuvrings of his agent and now experiences himself as the victim of the club / fans. That's a difficult idea to budge (as it'll mean him growing up pretty fast) and moreover he hasn't the mental strength for it not to affect his game badly - he was really pretty awful towards the end of the season.
Of course, he's young and he might quickly put it behind him if he did stay, but right now the evidence suggests that with regards mental strength, he's no Suarez.
So his development might well flourish elsewhere and he'll look every inch the 50m+ player that he promises, but that'll still not be confirmation he would have progressed similarly had he stayed.

That's a big if. I don't want to sell him because I think he an amazing amount of potential (Suarez and Sturridge were the main men in 2013-2014, but we put together a ridiculous run of form after Raheem got into the team in around December) but it looks like our hands are tied and we need to squeeze what we can out of this deal. £50 million for Torres looked like great money until 70% of it was spent on a championship player. £50 million for Sterling doesn't necessarily give us 50 million for two players either. Two new guys at about 100k a week vs the 35k Sterling was on is over 8 million a year extra in wages. You'd have to assume that would be at least partly taken into account. At the moment I don't trust us to spend the money wisely and I don't trust the manager to get the best out of the players even if the right ones are brought in. There's not as much upside to this sale as some people think.
