It is that time again - ‘The dreaded summer break’… where we have no football to keep the majority of us sane.
But what is worse than no football? For me, all the rumours, scrutiny and uncertainty from the media and fans regarding what changes will be made before the beginning of the new football season.
Luckily the media can be ignored, if needed, as the majority of people realise that it is their job to cause trouble and spin wherever possible. Benitez gives little away regarding who the club might be interested in, our approach for the summer, potential targets and therefore they are feeding off scraps of material and rely on putting 2+2 together with little validity and reliability.
The fans at Liverpool and every other club always demand more… more players, more money, more trophies! This is understandable as they care about the club and crave to be successful on and off the field.
Last season our side gave our fans a great challenge for the title, despite losing Torres for a large part of the season… this has given us more optimism for next season. Looking at our challengers it seems lots of changes are taking place, with Manchester United losing Ronaldo / Tevez and Chelsea getting a new manager. All this should hopefully lead to little stability and maybe less control than usual. This should give our side a window of opportunity and it is one which we need to exploit, before Ferguson’s new United team has moulded and is settled or Chelsea’s new manager is comfortable with the English game and his squad.
By contrast, at present, the changes at our club have been minimal. Benitez has looked at the squad and decided that an area which can be improved upon is right back, with Johnson coming in. Johnson is an attacking full back, which should hopefully enable us to break down the weaker teams which have cost us dearly the last two seasons. However there is a question mark about his defending. But luckily Benitez has shown he’s a superb defensive organiser and coach. Also in front of him he’ll have the ever willing Kuyt who will give him superb energy and protection. Individually they might not be the most complete players. However as a combination, Kuyt and Johnson might be extremely effective in both defence and attack. Johnson helping Kuyt in attack and vice versa in the defensive part of the game.
It is unknown what other changes will be made, on the field, however Benitez has indicated that changes will be minimal.
Off the field Benitez has bought in the shrewd addition of Dalglish, which can only help the club given his experience, knowledge and passion for the club. Last season Benitez bought in Pellegrino and Sammy Lee who both made impacts in helping Liverpool giving United a good run for the title and achieving our highest points total ever in the Premiership. Dalglish can only enhance the clubs chances in improving and between Benitez, Dalglish, Lee and Pelegrino we should have the right balance and all the characteristics needed to succeeding our aims.
Our club has its problems, as we know, with our two owners looking at making as much money from the club as possible, seeing it as a business more than anything else. This sickens the supporters who see us in debt and the owners milking the club, rather than respecting our traditions and embracing the club as we hoped our new owners would do when Moores sold the club.
However footballing-wise Benitez heads a group which has all the characteristics on the pitch and off it to challenge on all front. He’s built a team full of some of the best players in Europe. The team is extremely organised, hard working and as a result tough to beat. The defence doesn’t leak many goals and in Reina we have a keeper who challengers for the golden glove every season.
In attack we have two of the best match winners in the world in Gerrard and Torres. They get plenty of possession to hurt teams given Mascherano and Alonso boss the centre of midfield in every game no matter who is the opposition. But it is not just the spine which is impressive, other players make significant contributions , in attack and defence, such as Riera, Kuyt, Aurelio and Benayoun to help us win games.
There seems to be harmony between the back ground staff and the players, controlled superbly by Benitez - where it seems everyone is all singing off the same hymn sheet. There is a great blend between this current group and given the amount of changes made between our rivals this stability might make all the difference next season in us reach our aim in bringing back the title to Anfield.
Let's hope so.
