Liverpool principal owner John Henry has told Brendan Rodgers that Champions League qualification is not a minimum target for his first season in charge.
Rodgers’ predecessor Kenny Dalglish was backed heavily in the transfer market and given the aim of a top four Premier League finish.
But Henry has revealed that he is putting no such guidelines in place for the former Swansea boss, insisting that stability is the club’s main focus.
“We don't want to put any pressure on Brendan by saying you have got to make the Champions League this year," he said.
"Of course he wants to make the Champions League, we all do and so does every team in the Premier League.
"I thought it was realistic last season but we were so far off that pace.
"At this point we're just trying to get things stabilised - that should be one of our goals."

Screw all that, I belong to the microwave generation.
Instant success is all that matters.
Fuck Man U, Man C, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs.
We're gonna finish in the top four and it wont be surprising for me.
Seriously, we just need one or two tweaks. Just get Allen and another wing-forward.

I think he's learning from the mistake of last season in saying what we 'had' to achieve, as I've said a few times, they're new to this and it's a learning curve. I'm sure they have in mind what they consider a good season, I just think it's better to keep schtum about it, sometimes setting a target can have one of two effects, it can result in unnecessary pressure or it can make you underachieve because you're too focused on the set goal, when in reality you might actually be capable of greater things.

And yes, we know you're the microwave generation. I know that was tongue in cheek, but that's my main gripe on here, a complete lack of patience and faith. They're investing in the squad, they've made the brave choice of sacking THE fan favourite, I doubt they'd have done all that to play the season out in the knowledge it'll be 'just another season'.

The flip side is that he might not be setting a target because they're not investing in the squad as much as they did last season. Once bitten and all that.
