We had The Hodge losing us points left right and centre ... for half of last season and Spurs only just finished above us, despite us being in the relegation places for a fucking long time.

international competitions pretty much render that null and void. it's a euros in summer and modric wont risk his place. I think had we attempted to hold onto alonso he would still have performed and not risk his world cup place.

off-topic, but i still can't believe spurs managed to get modric to sign a 6 year deal last summer on £42k a week. what in the holy fuck was he thinking?! he could probably treble that (or more) if he moved to chelsea or utd.

I said 'had' we kept alonso, in all likelihood he would have performed to a high level so I don't see how I am talking shit. when a player wants out, regardless of who that player is you get rid, or is the saying 'no one is bigger than the club' a load of hot air?

gerrard also had a change of heart. there are lots of examples who initially wanted out and then thought better of it, but in general I think when a player indicates he wants to leave and is potentially a bad influence (hardly gerrard, alonso and pepe...you'd think) then you send them on their way. it isn't a rule set in stone and and every case has to be judged on its own merits but if a player hands in a transfer request I think you are better off selling them getting the money and putting it towards a player who actually want to play for you, team harmony shouldn't be under estimated.
