Solve our left back problem

[article]Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is ready to resist the clamour to sign a new left back, despite the renewed criticism of Alberto Moreno.

Moreno’s performance against Arsenal on Sunday revived harrowing memories of poor displays last season, most notably in the Europa League Final.

The Spaniard’s lapses in concentration have proven costly on multiple occasions, but Liverpool have kept faith in him so far and are showing no inclination to rethink their plans.

Liverpool tried to sign another left back to provide competition to Moreno during the summer, but Klopp pulled the plug on a move for Leicester’s Ben Chilwell when he felt the fee of £10 million was excessive.

Klopp does not believe such funds should be squandered on a full-back – certainly not for one who is untried at the highest level - and has not yet identified an obvious candidate to add to his squad who would be anything more than a temporary solution.

Instead, he is prepared to wait for James Milner to return to fitness and give him the chance to settle and establish himself in the position.

Milner has made it known he is not especially keen on reinventing himself as a left back, but he would put the team’s needs first and such is his professionalism Klopp is sure he would add a new dimension to the side in the role.

Liverpool are also waiting patiently for the return to fitness of Joe Gomez – who started last season at left back prior to his serious knee injury – while there are other emerging youngsters who could also fill in if required. Centre-back Ragnar Klavan could also play left back if the situation demanded it.

That has made Klopp less convinced of the urgency to recruit than many of those who witnessed his side’s exhilarating but flawed opening day win at The Emirates.

It is not completely out of the question Klopp will rethink before August 31, and he has more funds available should he require more players before the end of the month, but it is clear he believes the solution to Liverpool’s left back issue is already within his squad.[/article]

Dunno if someone has purposed this solution yet, but how about we play Klavan on the left and bring Matip on?
He's too slow for a LB. And I love him at CB. BTW it's RAGNAR - classic Viking name instilling fear into our opponents from the off. That should be on the back of his shirt too.

re. Milner at LB: pacy not fast, a better crosser by far than Moreno who seems to get 1:6 right at best and a better tackler and defender by far with a good head on his shoulders. Not perfect by any means but definitely an improvement on Moreno ... except maybe when we are playing the Burnleys of the PL world.

If we're not going for a big transfer such as Hector, then we should look closer to home. Another Premier League club probably won't let their player come to us, unless it's for a grossly inflated fee. So, among who are left, I'd take a gamble on Robbie Brady at Norwich. He's a good age - about 24 - has premier League and international experience, can also play further up the field, and he'd cost about £12m. A former manc, yes, and not yet fixed in the role, but we need someone, pronto, he's at least easier to teach than Moreno, he's certainly more suited to the role than Milner, and at this stage in the window I think he's the most 'gettable' decent LB around. And if a more orthodox top LB becomes available we could easily use Brady in a more attacking position, so he wouldn't become a wasted buy.

I don't think a left back is as make or break as some people suggest, and I'm glad we aren't buying for the sake of buying, however I'm still really disappointed we didn't get Hector. Regardless, I still have sympathy for Moreno, he's not the best defender, and that's not too much of an issue in attacking full backs a lot of the time, but I think the whole situation is being exacerbated by Klopps instructions. Its obvious that Moreno has been told to get forward at every single occasion, we know Klopp likes to play with an asymmetrical attack, and that's obvious in the difference of instruction Moreno receives compared to Clyne, however Klopps inability to adjust when its clear Moreno and the space he leaves is being targeted is slightly concerning.

Moreno is a key outlet of this team, he's provides us with width and an out ball, incredible pace on the counter attack, and frees up Coutinho by keeping the width when Cou roams. I really like that and I don't want to lose it, and whilst all of that doesn't excuse the pathetic tackle on Walcott, it does excuse him of being caught out of position when Lallana is being a flashy dickhead 30 yards from our goal.

I don't think Klopp will get any one now unless it's someone around 19 years old. He wants Milner in the team and LB position means Milner will be in the team.

@Pesam Anyone in the Championship worth a look ?
Comfortably the best left back in the division over the last few seasons has been George Friend but as Middlesbro got promoted they'd be reluctant to sell him and he's already 28. There are very few young left backs coming thru in the Championship at present and most LB's in the division are fairly average. In the 1st division there's a cracking young LB at Walsall called Rico Henry who reminds me of a 19 year old Ashley Young; he's lightening quick, great going forward and decent enough defensively. We are apparently keeping tabs on him as are Chelsea and I would bet a lot of other teams too.

I liked what I saw of Robertson when Hull played Leicester.
I don't think Robertson (or Cresswell) are much of an improvement on Moreno unfortunately, both decent going forward but neither are great defensively.

He's deffo going to bring someone else in, otherwise the sale of Smith doesn't make any sense at all. Sure, Milner will make a decent fist of things if asked to play there, but he isn't a real solution. Klopp probably thinks he has a 50/50 chance of making a real player of Moreno, but even if that's true it's going to be a long term project.

RB and LB have surely become the most peculiar hybrid positions on the pitch in terms of technique. The days of an LB who primarily defends are not quite over, but at the top level they're pretty much gone, and we're left with the vast majority who are, as a rule, decent going forward but not great defensively. The difference between the likes of Cresswell and Robertson versus Moreno is that the former look like they can listen, learn and improve. Moreno seems harder to teach than a pebble.

This will no doubt be ignored like the previous three references were, but we DO have a reserve LB, Joe Maguire, who is at least as able and reliable as Brad Smith. That's not to suggest we shouldn't be buying a top class LB now, but let's not keep ignoring who we already have on the books.
I'm all for giving the young lad a shot. If we can beat Arsenal with Moreno in the side what have we got to lose?

Yeah Robertson certainly has improved defensively but Cresswell never will because he wimps out of 50/50 tackles, you can't teach players not to chicken out of tackles.

Cresswell is out until the new year isn't he? So no point in looking at him. Robertson is improving no doubt, didn't we have a look a few years ago when we bought Wilson?

Thought Robertson looked quite good defensively. Mahrez had to change sides in the end to have an impact on the game. Certainly seemed more intelligent (but maybe thats not to difficult)... 🙂

Watched Rico Henry in a game and he looked very promising. Surprised he hasnt been bought yet by a bigger club.

Yeah I'm surprised he's still at Walsall as he's been on the radar of several big teams for at least a year now. He only turned 19 in July so the footage of him above in Hansern's post is of an 18 year old! He plays with such a swagger, he knows how good he is.

If Klopp wants a young full back he can work with and develop then surely he has got to be a great option.
