Solve our left back problem

So our manager is a good manager. What does he see in him that we don't? is it the high tempo pressing? The speed? I just want to guess because kloppo doesn't even seem to have a * rumor* out there that Moreno is going to be sold. I think he's here to stay.
He doesn't necessarily see anything in him.

I think its obvious we planned and still plan to get a left back - Smith and Flanagan leaving indicate that.

With Moreno being kept for now as back up - with a view to coaching him up and/or selling him on next year.

Didn't Gomez get dropped after having a stinker at left back, after some decent games there, in favour of Moreno?
I know he looked a decent prospect but I would have concerns, that after such a long lay off at such a crucial time in his development, that he might not reach such a high level as anticipated.

One thing though.
Lallana lost the ball. Moreno was in attack mode and moved up.
Too far though. He could have got back if he had moved forward as support instead of trying to win a 100m race, he was eventually only 5-6 yds short of Walcott as he tried to get back.
However the greater point is that when he bombed forward there was no reason to do so, at all, the ball was on the far side of the pitch and we had 2-3 players ahead of Lallana. Moreno lost all thought of his defensive duties and had tunnel vision re. attack. That seems to be his issue time and time again ..... he's incapable of having his brain comprehend both duties at the same time.

One of the rules of LB - Do not push on, unless you know the player is covered either by the CB, or by the CM dropping into the gap. Moreno just left one of the fastest players in the premier league, it was suicidal defending.

Yes Lallana lost the ball, but Moreno was way out of position, and no one to cover.

Who was at fault? One Alberto Moreno 100%
60-40% in favour of Moreno for me. I thought Lallana should have been far more aware of the player on him, he had more than enough time, both before receiving the pass and whilst it was on it's way, to have ascertained that.

It's not like we have youth bursting to get through, Flanno and Smith are gone.

This will no doubt be ignored like the previous three references were, but we DO have a reserve LB, Joe Maguire, who is at least as able and reliable as Brad Smith. That's not to suggest we shouldn't be buying a top class LB now, but let's not keep ignoring who we already have on the books.

Moreno game back into the team when we deployed wing backs. We changed formation to play three at the back. Gomez played in a traditional flat back four.

Didn't ignore you old chap, I don't know enough about him to really form an opinion.

Okay. Well, he's been edging into contention over the past year. Much sounder defensively than Moreno. Keeps it simple. A tough tackler, and pretty decent going forward. Unless we do get an established player in I can't see what else we can do, aside from short term moves like playing Clyne on the left, other than to give him a go.

As you say, an option is move Clyne to the left and put Trent Alexander-Arnold (hereby to be referred to as Trent AA) on the right who seems to be above Maguire in the pecking order.

Yes. I'm a bit bemused at TAA's elevation - he strikes me as more of a midfielder than a defender, and certainly not a specialist RB as Connor Randall is, but, as you say, he's clearly well-regarded. Wisdom is another, with Premier League experience, who could fill in at RB - probably his only hope these days.

Karius.. we should play him at left back...

He doesn't need a hand to play LB.. and he would probably do a better job the Moreno...

Aye, but there's a difference in being ready to support the attack when it's on, and being 30 yards out of position 10 seconds after we regain possession. I am pretty sure it's his lack of brain which is the problem, Clyne doesn't have a quarter of the positional issues on the other side.

Wonder if the De Sciglio links will resurface?

We definitely need a new LB - teams will just target us and its so obvious Moreno doesn't have a bloody clue whereabouts he is meant to be on the pitch. His 2 features are that he's quick and left footed. Given our wealth of attacking options, we just need someone solid who can cover and defend the far post.

Klopp keeps working with Moreno, picking him & handing him responsibility & has no shown no inclination to replace him. #lfc (Tony Barrett)

Fucking hell.

I think he wants a defensive leftback aswell. I can see why he would keep Moreno, as an attacking alternative, he's got a good engine and supports the attack, but I think he wants the best of both Worlds and recognises that Moreno is young and can be worked on. I don't have any problems with that, provided we buy an alternative.

I don't think it's a given he doesn't want a more defensive option, or I don't think he'd have experimented with Milner who was just back from the Euro's, ahead of Moreno who had a Summer off.

I'm more or less onside with this. Moreno is infuriating but I'm not ready to sell him at a loss yet as the physical attributes are there. That said, most would agree that playing him week-in, week-out without seeking an alternative would be a big mistake. I'm hoping we will bring someone in before the end of the window but I would rather we find a genuine candidate to hold down the role over a stopgap who only ameloriates our current frustration with Moreno.

Dunno if someone has purposed this solution yet, but how about we play Klavan on the left and bring Matip on?

klavan looked brilliant at cb. i'd rather keep him there for now

Reports in Spain suggesting Coentrao is on his way to us.

Apols if this has been posted already.

Strange one if true, he is no defensive LB either. Good attacker though, I liked him in his best years at Real.

Moreno is clearly going through a low point (that started in the 2nd half of last season) – he was pretty good in the first couple of months after Klopp came in. There is no reason why he can't come out of it a much stronger and better player, but even if he does it will take time and it would be good to have a quality alternative. I don't want Klopp to panic-buy, there are plenty of LBs who are worse than Moreno – yes, even defensively.

If true Klopp obviously wants the attacking quality Moreno has just with someone who actually you know, can defend and shit.
