Ok while Moreno isn't the only reason we look rubbish at the back he's easily the worst of the back five.
We've brought in two new CB's a new keeper and all we need now is to replace him and we at least have a solid foundation to work with.

Assuming we don't buy anyone in the next two weeks how would you fix the left back spot for this season?

Milner?
Ragnar?
Gomez?
Something else?

Once Gomez gets fit he'd be my choice as he looked super impressive before his nightmare injury.

Arbeloa on a free would be good business, surprised we haven't made the move.

Can he play lb comfortably?

Better than Milner I guess.
Arbeloa played LB when we faced Barcelona in the Champions League ions ago but not sure if he still has the guts for the prem

Any of the reserves good enough to step up?

I'm absolutely gobsmacked that Milner is considered the solution.

I can't see us going in to this season (after August) with Moreno as our only LB.

It seems really odd that we came out of preseason selling our only back up left back and banking on Milner as our best defensive option. As said in one of the other threads, this Summer has been a bit of the "same old" in that sense, we've bought a few attackers again when we really needed first and foremost a left back and DM.

Yeah, selling Smith and loaning Flanno seems a bit mad when it means Moreno is your only LB option.

.

As I said a while ago, Joe Maguire, the left back for the under 23s, is quite promising. Much more disciplined than Moreno, decent distribution, physically strong, strikes the ball very sweetly. Is he 'ready'? He's not ready in terms of experience, he's still got a lot to learn, but at least he does learn, unlike that empty-headed buffoon Moreno. If we don't bring in a new LB then I'd like to see him given a low-key chance, maybe against Burton, to see how he fares.

You would think so but I would have thought Smith was it.

Me too. We MUST have something in the pipeline to sell Smith and let Flanno go out on loan. Whtehr it's Gomez with Moreno as back up or a new signing, there is no way we can go through the season relying on Moreno.

We've bought 2 CBs and a GK aswell.

How far is Gomez off from training again?
Really don't like the idea of playing a right footed CB in the LB role.
Anyway to answer your question, sometime next month. But he's got a lot of work to do before he's ready to play,
I don't think we'll see him play until Christmas considering the lack of pre season games.

Yet he was clearly our best LB when he did play there. Tons of right footed players play LB due to the obvious percentage differences between left/right footed players. I'd rather a good right-footed player with defensive nouse (Gomez) at LB than a natural left-footed player with next to zero (Moreno).

Any fucking left back will do, seriously, Gibbs, Bertrand, Konchesky... ANYONE WILL DO.

Arbeloa isnt the answer, sadly.

I know Klopp likes to develop players and see improvements through training but you have to wonder if Moreno is intelligent enough to actually learn anything.

It's impossible for everyone in the world to see our LB issues and yet Klopp and Buvac ignore them. 100% there is something happening behind the scenes.

Maldini is probably the most famous right footed left back.
I'd still rather have someone more comfortable on his left foot in that position.

Part of the problem was we (and the commentators) went into the game knowing Moreno's erratic play and positioning was costly at times last season, and so it got a lot of focus. I thought he made some good tackles in the second half, and as mentioned somewhere else it is clear that he is instructed to charge forward and start counters.

Still - I think he needs replacing and I don't think Milner should be the answer. That would be Klopp wanting to keep a player he has clearly bonded with happy rather than an astute tactical move. Would have liked to keep Flanno there personally. Not sure who the answer is - there are plenty of LBs in the premier league but i can't imagine there are many who would be easy to purchase.

Gomez is perfect over the longer term.

I wouldn't be mad about using him too much this season.
