So....Who's Optimistic For The Season Ahead ?

I have said this many times - I expect us to come top in every competition we are in and I hold firm to that.

Now Reality - if he gets his team as follows:

Johnson --- Skrtel ---- Agger ---- Jose
-------------------Lucas----Allen------------
---------------------------SG-------------------
Depsey/Bellamy----Borini/Suarez------Suarez/Downing/Cole

play with the formation above then I think we can do well in most games. In the formation above I think the combination up front can be flexible, but he has got to get the middle three correct to win games and dominate games and they need to play really well.

Our full back area is still cause for concern as well.

Don't care what anyone says but Johnson's a disaster waiting to happen and Enrique is making silly mistakes in every game now.
Robinson's still only a kid and i'm not al that sold on Kelly who's injury prone anyway.

I’m optimistic that this season will be better than last season.
Mainly because it’s a case of “we can do no worse”.

The competition:
We know what to expect from the two Manc teams and they are virtually assured of two spots in the top four.
Arsenal will not be able to replace van Persie’s goals and this will be a big factor for them. Their points total last year was 70. If just two of their games were losses instead of wins, they likely would have finished out of the top six.
Chelsea and Spurs - we know less about what to expect:
Chelsea have lost Drogba but have also added to the squad. Will the Di Matteo honeymoon end?
Spurs have mostly the same squad but a new manager. e.g. losing Modric but gaining Sigurdson is largely a wash IMO, so I see it depending on AVB and how the team responds to him.
So (at the least) we will be fighting for 6th place with Newcastle, Everton and possibly Villa.
I don’t think that two of those teams will be better than us, so therefore we will finish higher than last season.

The team:
I agree that the current squad cannot challenge for a CL qualification. However, I believe that we will see better from the following:
Lucas (lost half a season. A full season also means less of Spearing)
Downing (impossible to be worse)
Gerrard (last season was so-so by his standards)
Henderson (even if he doesn’t progress, he cannot be worse)
Shelvey (probably not a starter but still progressing)
Suarez (will not miss 8 games)

The back five should be the same group as last season, so no back-sliding there.

We have lost Maxi but have “gained” Cole. We lost Kuyt but gained Borini.
We will either have Carroll (who cannot be worse than last season) or a replacement (that surely cannot be worse than Carroll was last season).
If we lose Bellers, then there is Sterling and/or another incoming player.
Possible addition of Allen?

Hardly the best bunch to ever pull on the Liverpool shirt but I still believe that it will be better than last season. If only somewhat better. It still counts as optimistic!

Note: I left Adam out to please Modo.

why don't people think we can challenge for a top 4 position ? If Chelsea's signings come good then lets assume the following:

1/2) Man City/Man United (or vice versa) 3) Chelsea

We can still fight it out against the rest with our squad, and don't forget that even with our squad we took points from all the above, and they don't like playing us. What we need to do this season for the improvement is to WIN those games we dominate through possession and clear chances/goals - something that was lacking last season. Minimum should be top 4 at least.

Arsenal have signed Podolski, Giroud and Cazorla. And still have RVP.

We of all people should realize that new signings don't always manage the job we expect of them.

Mark - I was responding to Herr Onceared - regarding who Aresenal have signed to potentially replace RVP. As for our signings this season - we only have one, and he played today in a game we WON, that we traditionally really struggle with (i.e. european qualifier game before season begins).

I know Moron, I was being ironic. I'm tired, drunk and having a go x

I've never been less optimistic or enthusiastic about a new season.

I'm optimistic. There is no reason not to be. New manager that will hopefully have us playing some decent football. 1 month left of the transfer window which will see us buy 2-3 players.

Its a rebuilding process but I'm confident we'll see an improvement on last season.

Until there is actually something to moan about I'll be positive. We havent sold Agger or Skrtel yet. We have almost no clue regarding who we are after, but we know what type of players Rodgers needs.

The Acadamy is in extremely good condition and we're targeting players in their early twenties.
If peope have some patience with Rodgers I think we'll see some good results.

I really don't know.

On one hand I am very nervous about our chances and how the players will react to the new manager and whom we are going to buy let alone sell. I'm afraid a few of the players in the squad already doesn't keep up with the standards expected and I'm not convinced yet we're going to come out improved of the window. I mean sell Carroll, Kuyt and Agger and get in Dempsey, Borini and perhaps a new CB doesn't fill me with confidence.

On the other hand, I don't think we were that bad at the begining of last Season I actually felt we endured one of the most unlucky Seasons for quite some time.

We played great against United, Citeh, and a few others but still often lacked the winner either due to posts or splendid keeper performances. For one Hart's performance at Anfield was the best we saw all Season. After a a few months of bad luck we turned rather shite in the end obviously focusing on the cups.

It was a strange Season overall and I still feel for Kenny to be honest, but a lot of the new guys are now not so new and with a bit of luck and a very talented managers new ideas we could suddenly find ourselves in completely different layer of competition than last Season.

So, yeah, I'm quietly optimistic after all. I guess.

You will soon change your opinion if agger is sold 😉

I'm not that nervous about the season, I've lowered my expectations in the hope we'll just settle into playing good football with continuity and cohesion in the side. I'm more concerned about who might leave.

I'm looking forward to it, but as it stands right now it's near on impossible to say with any confidence how we'll do.

I mean when you look at our squad it's hard to know what we are going to get out of them this season

Pepe, Skrtel, Stevie, Suarez and Agger have proven their quality and are all pretty much consistent performers when playing.

Then you've got the likes of Shelvey, Henderson, Borini, Kelly, Lucas (how will he come back?), Coates, Allen (?), Carroll, Sterling and Pacheco who are all young and seem to have the potential, but how many of them will step up and take their chance is anyones guess.

I wouldn't be surprised to see us get good seasons out of the likes of Enrique, Adam and Downing, but once again they've got it all to prove.

We still need to add a couple more players, but i'm sure we'll see at least 3 more signings before the transfer window shuts.

I'd love to see this and I even dare to expect it from Rodgers come Kick Off:

.......................................................Reina........................................................
Johnson..........................Skrtel....................Agger.............................Enrique
....................................................Lucas...........................................................
......................................Adam....................Gerrard........................................
Suarez....................................................................................................Borini
...................................................Carroll...........................................................

That team is capable of beating anyone.
