So who do we want/expect/hope?

Liverpool plan to make the announcement of their new manager on Friday, ESPN understands. They have whittled their list of candidates down to Wigan's Roberto Martinez and Swansea's Brendan Rodgers, after a thorough search for the right man to replace Kenny Dalglish.

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins met Rodgers on Tuesday to discuss his future at the club, with Rodgers believed to be interested in discussing the Anfield job with the Reds' owners.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan told ESPN that his manager is back in England but he is yet to speak to him. Told by ESPN that Liverpool are keen on Rodgers, Whelan said: "I hope they sign him but I have not heard from my manager yet."

Martinez had looked the clear favourite to be named Liverpool manager but his concerns over the mooted appointment of Louis van Gaal as sporting director, and his expected control over transfers, have swung a two-horse race back towards Rodgers.

However, Jenkins has shown marked reluctance to even grant Rodgers permission to speak to Liverpool, whereas Whelan has fulfilled his pledge to Martinez to allow him to go to a big club, should he wish to do so.

Amid growing speculation, Jenkins said of Rodgers on Monday: "We would like to confirm that there has been no contact from Liverpool and nothing has changed since our previous statement on the issue."

Fed up with the procrastinations of Liverpool, Whelan has given Martinez until Thursday to make his decision. Liverpool will take the next 48 hours to finalise their plans and an announcement is expected to be delivered by Friday.

lets come back friday then . expecting an anti-climax .

wonder who's informing ESPN then , they seem to be 'breaking' a few stories about this appointment process .

In 10 minutes the prices have reversed and now Martinez is favourite to be our next manager.

From Paul Tomkins: "Someone I know reckons it’s sorted and that it’s Rodgers, Van Gaal and Segura as the management/techncial team."

11/8 means you put 8 on, and you win 11 plus your 8 quid stake back.

I know betting odds, I've lost enough in my time!

I dare say you have, mate, but correct me if I'm wrong: if someone is 11/8 fav that means 11/8 on. In horse racing that certainly means you put 11 on to get 8 back (plus your original stake). I don't bet on football so I'll stand corrected if, for some astonishing reason, it changes across sports.

Surely the 'fav' just means favourite, doesn't it? Why would it have anything to do with 'on'? That just means the odds are such that your winnings are smaller than your stake, but you can be a favourite at pretty much any odds.

brendan rodgers: Am not opposed to this actually,

here's my non emotional checklist

plays exciting footy - check
Young and upcoming - check
Has won trophies - nope
Has a good win ratio in charge of teams - nope
Will attract European players/talent - unlikely, (Some say our club is great, manager not important)
Will get us back into contention for European places - unlikely
will be able to tactically outsmart other top european managers should we return to CL- unlikely

The big question for me, is how will a van gaal style appointment overcome any of these deficiencies. Thoughts?

Presumably it won't, but he'll be there breathing down the poor sod's neck.

@SiClancy what's the crack with Brendan Rodgers pal?

Simon Clancy Simon Clancy ‏@SiClancy
@Rachael_Hodges I would shout across the office but you've probably gone home.......he's (almost certainly) the next boss.

It does seem risky to put such a domineering manager in a DoF role and I wonder if the desire for a young up and coming manager (if there is one) is a little idealistic.

Is what we're seeing over-commitment to a particular model without fully appreciating the circumstances we're in right now?

By circumstances I mean the tight time frame to get people in place, organizational and process transformations etc. And of course the availability of the right people.

11/8 is different from 8/11.

Simple mathematics.

All I pointed out was that Rodgers could not be 11/8 FAV if Martinez odds were 10/11.

10/11 is shorter odds than 11/8 therefore making Martinez favourite.

10/11 is 0.909 so if you put £1 on, you would win £1.91 back

11/8 is 1.375 so if you put £1 on, you would win £2.38 back

If you don't think that's right then give me 11/8 about Rodgers being next manager and I'll place my bet with you *insert smiley face*
