Quick question:

Why would Higuain, David Villa, Di Maria et al - the most sought after players in World Football - want to come and play for a team in the Europa League in an outdated stadium?

I presume this thead is hypothetical. Did you expect everyone to come out and say ah we've money, outdated stadium and not in CL league, we'll take Bobby Zamora, a LB and Javi Martinez. It'd be a short thread.

Because we are already within some bizarre imagined dreamscape in which we find 60M laying around, which would suggest new ownership, new hope, and the beginning of a new project with a team that actually has impressive international stature.

They wouldn't. And almost everyone deludes themselves every fucking year that it will happen. Then they complain when it doesn't.
I have to laugh at these threads.

Buy this player for this much.
This one for that much.
Sell this one for that.

Then we can afford this.

HOW THE FUCK DO YOU KNOW???!!!

Ah gotcha.

In that case, how about Kenny Dalglish 1981 model?

He'd fit in well.

Ah Ryan, don't be such a dry arse. As someone said it's an internet forum, with a thread based on the assumption we have 60million. Yes it's Hypothetical, but a bit of light reading was in order because of the day that's in it. I doubt anyone is the mood to get into heated debates about tactics, Rafa or anything doom and gloom.

It's a football forum, it's what happens, it's not the real world

I'm not a fan of these threads either to be honest but I suppose it's a break from the harsh reality that we've fuck all.

We need an LB and a winger; I think Kuyt is staying so it needs to be on the left.

Lahm has been an LB I've wanted for about 6 years; I'm looking forward to seeing how he goes against Barca but if Bayern were to win the CL I wonder if he'd then decide to look elsewhere for a new challenge or if he'd settle back for the rest of his career. Anyway, if he was to say yes I'd expect about 10 - 11m.

Di Maria would be a great pick on the wing but I'm not sure why he'd come here. Silva I have doubts on making it in this league and I'm not really sure he's a winger. Robben I'd take, Milner would be fine as well though he's not really the sort of winger I think we need. I was watching the cup final against Everton last night and seeing Barnes tearing them to shreds was almost enough to make me cry. You could even do without his running if we had someone who could put in the sort of crosses he provided time after time. Anyway, that aside I'd take Cole on the left in a second if he'd come but otherwise I think Milner is the most realistic if not the best option. 18m

I'd use the remaining 32m plus anything else I could lay my hands on to get another striking option. Benzema would be great, Higuain would be amazing but utterly unfeasible, Villa would tilt the earths axis even if I'm doubtful he could handle this league. I don't think any of them would come though Benzema would be the most likely of an unlikely group. If Benzema didn't come for 30m then I'd like to see us talking with Klose. Still a great player IMO, not a regular first choice and possibly not happy. If he came for, say, 20m, then I'd be putting the rest on a midfielder to rotate with Gerrard and Mascher.

I'd give up the Internet for Tevez. Never gonna get him obv, but he's the sort I want.

Quick! Let's sign Tevez.

I wouldnt give Rafa £60M to spend in the transfer market in any case.

New owners wont make any difference if he's still in charge.

You could send a pillow to sleep you great big dullard.

The on-the fields results were always the main issue
we wouldnt be talking about the yanks if Rafa had won the title last season.

I dont trust Rafa in the transfer market at all, he would waste these 60M in useless, injury prone, slow, defensive-midfielders or fullbacks players...

We need a clean slate. New owners, new manager.

While i agree that things are stale and we need a new manager and new owners to state that its all his fault in the transfer market is shite..

Rafa has been very close to signing a few terrific players only to told the money isnt available last minute.. Alves, Simao...

20M for a 31 year old Klose who isn't first choice any more and is on the decline? That's madness Wiz!

10 right-footed players in one team?

We're unbalanced and lopsided enough as it is Wiz. Spending 60M on worsening that situation isn't your greatest idea I must say.

We need a change of formation first. Benitez is still going to play Lucas and Masch, Gerrard off Torres, Kuyt and 1 other.

I want to see us play with 5 attack minded players then we can start slotting all these great names in otherwise its 60million on a left winger coz that's probably all he thinks needs fixing.

Some names to throw into the hat:

Felipe - LB from Depor. Had a great season till his leg was broken into itty bitty pieces. No idea what he'd cost. 8M?

Capdevila - I think he's available on a free in the summer. If so, he'd be a decent short-term solution, particularly if funds are tight.

Azpilicueta - Carra or Masher filling at RB next season is unacceptable. If Kelly is deemed good enough to play when fit, great. If not, this guy is 20 years old and has a bright future ahead of him. City were linked briefly I believe, so if there is any kind of bidding war, there is no point. If we can get him for a reasonable price and it reflects the fact that he'll be a backup RB, we'd be winning.

Elia - 9M? Fast, direct and perhaps worth a punt.

Mata / Silva / Turan - 20M? I don't know Turan that well, but everyone else seems to rate him. We need a top quality player to start on the left though and perhaps Mata would be another versatile option.

VDV - Some have been brave enough to suggest he's been better than Kaka this season. I don't know, but I'd still take him. Good player.

Henry - he's almost certainly going to leave Barca in the summer, so could be a good signing for us although dependant on a number of 'ifs'. 1) He's still willing to work hard, 2) He'll take wages that reflect the Henry of now and not the Henry of 5 years ago and 3) Barca release him for a symbolic amount.

The striker part of our summer is going to be the most difficult though. If Benzema is available, he'll go to Utd and although Higuain would be fantastic, it seems extremely unlikely. Ditto Villa who would be mad to leave Valencia (decent club who win nothing) to come to Liverpool (better club but still win nothing) at his age. I was hoping to come up with a few names after that, but I have no idea. Jovovic might be better than we expect, who knows.

For forwards, i'd take Vucenic from roma, Balotelli from inter, Kerrisson if possible still, Chamakh for some reason, Cardozo from benfica or Suazrez from ajax (if its even remotely possible). Although i am expecting none of them

Whatever happened to Quagliarella? He still banging them in?

Dzeko has a € 40 million buy-out clause. I think he would be worth it. Add to that Lahm, Srna and Cole or Petrov and I'd be more than happy.

From Soccernomics, the twelve secrets to the transfer market according to Lyon owner Jean Michel Aulas (who took Lyon from the 2nd division in France to where they are now) :

1. A new manager wastes money on transfers, don't let him.
2. Use the wisdom of crowds
3. Stars of recent World Cups or European Championships are overvalued, ignore them.
4. Certain nationalities are overvalued. (The Dutch were an example mentioned, in particular Van Bronckhorst, who failed at Arsenal but still got a move to Barca where he failed too)
5. Older players are overvalued.
6. Centre Forwards are overvalued, goalkeepers are undervalued.
7. Gentlemen prefer blonds: identify and abandon "sight based prejudices"
8. The best time to buy a player is in his early twenties.
9. Sell any player when another club offers more than he is worth.
10. Replace your best players even before you sell them.
11. Buy players with personal problems, and then help them deal with their problems.
12. Help your players relocate.

Some explanation is required on a few of them, but that's the basis of it.

Number 11 is a bit risky though. Which player with personal problems have Lyon bought?

The rest sounds quite logical.

Much as I love Carra I have always had a deep-seated worry that we can never win the league with him as a regular starter because no matter how superb he's been for us he just cannot be considered in the same league as Ferdinand, Terry, Carvalho, Vidic etc and the fact he will be 33 during next season re-enforces my belief that a top class (or in this case potential top class) CB like Kjaer is a must.

If we start next season with Kjaer and Agger with Skrtel and Carra as back up we will have a very strong foundation on which to build a league winning team.

Obviously a left back is essential but none spring to mind although the Benfica lad did impress.

I think Turan would be a superb addition and a realistic target.

Players in our own league we could look at are; Roger Johnson or Shawcross as alternative CB options, Bent although if Jovetic signs he would not be necessary, and Rodallega who has impressed each time I've seen him and can play in a few different positions.

I honestly don't know, there was a mention of Clough being similarly prodigious in the transfer market and that's certainly on the things he did. It might be an amalgamation of Lyon, Wenger and Clough/Taylor.

On the strikers are overvalued thing, part of Lyon's policy was not to sign strikers. I know of two instances when they've broken that (Lopez and Sonny Anderson) but there are exceptions every rule, so it's a matter of knowing when to break the rule. It looks like they've gotten it right this year anyway
