It's not impossible to guess

Purple Aqui is going to start

Fact
Hopefully,
BTW where does that purple Aqui stuff come from? :-\

Fuck this 'playing down expectations' shit! If Aquilani isn't a footballing god in his very first game, I'm going to bury my head in the earth and scweam until I'm sick.

Anyone else excited as me to see Gilardino grace Anfield with his presence tomorrow ???

No, come to think of it.

I think we should form a guard of honor for him when he runs out onto the pitch.

That's the spirit 😉

Ok Aquaman will start. But will he start right, play well and show us stuff to believe?

My theory is we bought him just in case we face Italian opposition.

Some might call it a luxury purchase.

My pro-Rafa stance is beginning to waver and although I remain a fan of his I find his continual selection of Lucas mystifying. Also, this weekend with 20 minutes to go would have seemed an ideal time to blood Aquilani and yet he brought on the mediocre El Zhar.

I am quite sure I will be pushed into the Anti-Rafa camp if he does the unthinkable of starting Aquilani against Fiorentina and then benching him again against Arsenal at the weekend. If Aquilani starts against Fior he has to start against Arsenal.
I've already made it pretty clear that, unless there has been a recurrence of the original injury or a new injury, Rafa and his team have handled the return to fitness of Aquilani quite poorly. However, if he plays against Fiorentina then I will understand if he's not there against Arsenal. It will depend on the period he plays for and how involved he is during that period. If he really pushes himself (say greater than 70 minutes) then he will need recovery time of more than a couple of days. I'd hope that he plays him for around the 45 to 50 minute mark and then brings him off in lieu of the Arsenal match.

Either way we will get a chance to see what he is capable of in the Italian league at the very least.

Alberto Aquilani prepares for his first Liverpool start – four months on

• Fernando Torres likely to appear in the second half
• Reina, Lucas and Insúa to miss Fiorentina dead rubber

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/dec/09/alberto-aquilani-liverpool-champions-league

"I think the fans will get to see the best of Aquilani this season. It is a question of time," said the Liverpool manager, who plans to rest Lucas Leiva against the Group E leaders and deploy the 25-year-old Italian alongside Javier Mascherano in central midfield.

"Only yesterday he scored an amazing goal in training. We had two. Fabio Aurélio scored with a volley from 30 metres and then Aquilani scored with a left-footed chip over [José] Reina. It was very, very good, and he showed touches of quality. His movement on the pitch is very clever but there are things he needs to improve, like tackling. We want to use him as much as we can this season, starting against Fiorentina."

can't wait.

Lucas and Insua rested!

I think Pacheco is in Team List B. I checked the UEFA website a few weeks ago and his name was in that list.

Also read a report saying that he will feature.

Anyway what's the worst that could happen if we fielded an ineligible player? Kicked out of the Champions' league? Pfffft.

Uninteresting fact. I just came through Liverpool airport at the same time as the Fiorentina team. They were very purple. A few fit footy wives with em.

Thats pretty cool.

Any pictures?

Looking forward to the game 😀

Fiorentina is missing half a team aswell.

Jovetic (doubtful), Vargas (doubtful), Mutu, Gamberini, Dainelli, Mutu, Marchioni, Zanetti and Gobbi.

I really want us to win tonight.

As me old dad always says, football is about 5% talent and physique and the rest is all about the right mentality.

Ok maybe that's a bit over the top but I still think it's very much spot on when looked at in a broader picture.

There's a reason why United keeps on winning even without their main charachters. There's a belief throughout their club from fans too tea-ladies that United wins games. (Hopefully they'll soon discover they are really shite and start loosing btw...)

We've been struggling most year and with the title apparently out of reach it's obvious that a player like Gerrard has been hitting way below his standards. He's had injury of course but it's not the Gerrard we know and cherish we've seen outthere for the last three games or so. He's got to get his mind back on track and tonight would be a good night to start.

A win tonight will probably boost our confidence even further and even more so would another clean-sheet. That would make it four in a row in that department, and would do wonders for confidence and belief in the back. (Oh and Agger really needs to stay fit as well).

I really do reckon players like Lucas and Insua in particular has been suffering a great deal from this overall lack of confidence. Lucas is so affraid of doing anything wrong that he's often passing the ball sideways over 3 yards or backyards (his preferable pass). When we get back to our winning ways I'll even reckon him to step up his game a notch or two and same goes for Insua. Young foreign players who aren't Messi aren't to be trusted upon to turn the tide evidently.

Football is a confidence game and we need to get ours back on track rapidly.

So he can't tackle? Is that why Rafa's been so reluctant to play him?
If hes as good as Scholes, who also cant tackle, he should be ok. Lets just hope he can take a tackle.

The lad has not even played a full game for us yet. Why is our manager highlighting his weaknesses to us already? Big him up for fucks sake. Something like.......

"He is the messiah!".

Lucas couldn't tackle for two years and it didn't seem to matter.

Arsenal are also going for a menaingless game in greece ... the average age of their squad will be 20 ... if it wasn't for silvestre, it would be 18 ... I wish Rafa would give a few of our under 20 year old kids a run out or a chance to be on the bench. Let them know 'This is where you'll be if you can prove it to me'

And was coming back from a long term injury which makes it even more mystifying
Absolutely mate. El Zhar had a major injury, and only began full training about 3 weeks ago. Does this decision mean he doesn't really care about protecting poor Nabil? I suppose he hasn't rushed Gerrard or Torres back after injuries either. Oh.
It just makes his previous chit-chat about Purple a load of bollocks, and proves he contradicts himself more often than not. If you protect players by not rushing them back, then do it for everyone. Not just Purple.
Hypocrite.
I'm guessing that's to do with the fact that Aqui has never played in England before, and had a slightly longer time out on the sidelines. But reading Rafa''s mind is always guesswork.

Not sure what you mean but they've qualified so he's giving his kids a go ... We should be doing the same for this game, as it doesn't mean shit in the standings.

ahhh ... for them, it's not meaningless ... for an 18 year old pacheco or eccleston, it would be something they want to prove themselves in.

It's still worth a few million quid and I think this team just needs to remember how to win again.

I'd rest Carragher if possible, and play Babel too.
