I think people forget how delicate this situation is and how much priority Rafa puts on having players who 'want' to play for us.
This whole situation has gone round in circles, to the point now where you could argue that Rafa could rightly feel, "fuck yer then". He's made a mistake last Summer in the way he handled Alonso, he came out and acknowledged Alonso's improvement and made a public plea (of sorts) for him to stay.
Since, Alonso has said pretty much fuck all. Kept his cards close to his chest and allowed speculation, most of which is eminating from Spain to run riot.
He wants to go, that much is obvious, so I wouldn't blame Rafa for preparing now for a season without Xabi and making the most of the situation AND going for the player who was obviously a big priorty for him.
Gossip, specaultion, whatever, it's fairly clear Alonso wants to go. He should at least have the balls to come out and make his intentions clear. My guess is he'll keep quiet, allow negotiations and then the transfer to go ahead and then come out and blame Benitez.
