There's no certainty we'll get Silva, though

But as deals go, £22M + Sneijder + Negredo is a good deal.

Probably worth around £40M.

The thing is with all part ex stuff, its simple saying it, but do either or want to move here?
I would like to think so , but they might want a little bit of input. Would Real have approached them first about the idea. Would we have an idea of personal terms?
It sounds like a Real ruse to get us to the negotiating table, still Rafa is not a dunce when it comes to being sharp.

Exactly right.

Rafa would LOVE having both Sneijder and Silva as both are comfortable playing anywhere in the 3 behind Torres..

Rafa loves his options..

Yeah how comfortable is Wesley in the middle? We seem to be missing the idea that we NEED a central midfielder who will do the donkey work AND keep us ticking over, like Xabi did.

Unless a tremendous amount of faith will be shown in young Lucas and Spearing.

We're effectively swapping Xabi for Sneijder & Silva in that case then. Fucking A.

That's very good indeed.
My feelings exactly. Roll on number 19 + 6 if that happens. Fuck yeah.

Wes is mainly a CM isn't he? He plays there for Holland.

How many clubs play with two holding midfielders?

I'm not saying we need to.. But alot of donkey work is required in the middle, in the Premiership.

Just a slight concern, s'all.

Not too Xabi eh. I just hope this Silva lad is as good as 6CM seems to think he is.

can sneijder play as an attacking midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 because it would require him to be disiplined and do his share of defending.

Club career

[edit] Ajax
Although Sneijder was not born in Amsterdam, he started his career in the Ajax's famous youth academy. He made his debut for Ajax in a 2-0 win at Excelsior on December 22, 2002 when manager Ronald Koeman, troubled by an injury-filled squad called him up, advised by Danny Blind, the then-coach of the Ajax youth-squad. He rapidly established himself in the role of midfield general and occasional left winger. Despite his short height, he is quick, strong on the ball and his passing range is enhanced by his ambidexterity.

He was Ajax midfield general, and he has had that role for Holland aswell. If he's a bit higher up in the pitch, then thats only positive. As Mark said, we don't need 2 holding midfielders either.

I WANT WESLEY!
I think LFC have been crying out for an ambidexterous player.......wooooooooooooooooooooooo

If we get Sneijder and Silva, and only lose Alonso, it is a fantastic deal. Hopefully Mascher stays. I'll be a happy boy and go as far to say we should be favourites for the league then.

Real paid 27 mill euros for Wesley.

He's 25 and has the best years of his career coming up.

22 mill + this lad would fan - fucking - tastic.

I just think Gerrard will have to sacrifice part of his freedom if we sign Sneijder, who would also have to do his fair share. It's preferable to granting Lucas a staring role the side, and Sneijder doesn't strike me as a lazy Ronaldinho sort.

It'd be great to have a quality set-piece taker, too.

Thank you Asim, I have learned today that ambidextrous does indeed apply to feet as well as hands, indeed any appendage

obviously I'd rather xabi stayed but I've thought for some time that if masher is;
60/40 (70/30?)
defensive/attacking

then the person partnering him (masher) should be
60/40
attacking/defensive

Surely it depends on what system we're looking to use.

If we're playing with a 4-2-3-1 with two holding midfielders, do we want an attacking midfielder playing a holding role?

Or should we just look at our formation as a 4-4-1-1?

That team looks very impressive. Apart from Insua being unproven (at this stage anyway), I can't see a weak link in it.

It's certainly less predictable than our current side. The only concerns are, as Mark said, the defensive solidity as a team, but we've said for years we need to open up against the lesser sides, and with this side we have that capability.

Against the top four sides, Gerrard would have to get more stuck in.

It's all 'ifs' and 'buts' at this stage, though.

i worry wes and gerrard may be like fat frank and gerrard BUT there is no reason why that formation isn't worth giving a go.

the squad will look really strong too with 2 back up full backs (degen and aurelio), skertel, a hopefully improving lucas, an emerging spearing, yossi and riera rotated on the flanks with babel rotated with torres as and when needed.

Surely this should be merged with the 'spunk the Alonso cash'?
Actually that 'spunk' should be merged with my 'What to do with the Xabi money' that was merged with the Xabi 100 page thread ... so maybe that should be unmerged and then those two merged ? This is doing my head in 😉

Which should in turn be merged with the ' Mascher to signs a new contract this week' thread, which is also about Alonso

You're right ... I had forgotten about that one. I'm sure there are others we can unmerge and then remerge. It's like getting married.
