Set Pieces

Why do we seem to score so few? and concede so many? Thus far this season, all goals conceded have come from some sort of set piece or another.

Honestly, I can't remember a championship chasing team who have been so susceptible to set pieces in recent years? It's cost us, not just last night, but in recent years, especially in big games when goals are hard enough to come by without gifting the opponent cheap goals (and goals from set pieces are often cheaply conceded).
Ivanovic's brace last year in the CL, i remember Silvestre getting 2 against us, Ferdinand doing skill off a corner and scoring. Against the top teams, it seems to have cost us a lot more than it should. We actually seem to be one of the worst in the league at defending and attacking them.

Is it just my selective memory? It is actually the zonal marking? Is it the goalkeeper? Is it that we don't have commanding centre-backs? Is it that we just don't have that many good players in the air? Is it just a case of lack of height? Don't we practise enough in training?

On the flip side, why do we score so few? United have Vidic and Ferdinand who grab goals from set pieces, Chelsea have Alex, Carvalho and Terry who get goals, Arsenal have Gallas (and Vermalen doesn't look too shabby going forward).. with Sami gone, we don't seem dominant in the air in either box. With set pieces being such a prevalent part of the English game, shouldn't we be better? If it's a case of height, should we simply be looking to do something smarter (playing it short or cutting it back) instead of playing it into the box with the likelihood of scoring seemingly less than 10%. Defensively, have we invested so much time that we simply can't change from zonal marking now? or haven't we invested enough?

From the Echo...

RAFA BENITEZ insisted he will not change his defensive system – despite conceding three more goals from set plays last night.

All five of the goals shipped by the Reds this season have come from set pieces – including a free-kick, a corner and a penalty in last night’s home defeat by Aston Villa.

But the Reds boss insisted he does not need any more height in his back four, nor does he need to change his much debated system of zonal marking.

“We are a team that tries to play football and we have players with quality,†he rapped.

“If you have too many big lads it can become difficult. We try to play it on the ground, try to move the ball – and we had a lot of chances trying to play it this way.

“Eighty-six points (last season’s final Premier League total) prove that it is a good system. To concede only 10 goals last season from set pieces also proves it is a good system.

“Obviously we can always improve and we will try to improve.â€

But the Reds boss did condemn his players for making “too any mistakes.â€

When it works it works well, the problem is it takes ages for us to finetune it, and by then we've usually conceded too many soft goals because of it.

It's been an issue for ages and people can moan about the pundits picking up on it all the time, but I think you'd have to be fucking blind to not recognise that it clearly IS an issue.

Yep. That's the way I see it.

And it's cost us frequently in some BIG games too.

To beat Liverpool...play the ball in the air! We win less headers than nearly every team in the league...wish I had the stats to back me up but that is definitely my impression. That lack of heading ability is most evident at corners and set pieces but is noticeable right across the pitch.

If I were managing against us, I'd ensure all corners were hit to a tall player who isn't being marked by Carra or Skrtel. Usually a late arriving defender who is marked by any one of our short players.

At the other end there are several problems. Gerrard is wasted taking corners. He rarely picks out our man because we are always outnumbered in the box. Add to that, there isn't a better player in our team to sit just outside the box on corners and lash in poor clearances.

There are no late runs into the box and there is no Sami Hyppia type presence to knock about the central defenders.

In fact the price we have paid for flair is that we are quite weak physically compared to a lot of the premier league teams. Here's hoping Krgiakos is an absolute monster in both boxes.

I have little time for the zonal marking/man marking debate. Spaces don't score goals, so most of the time I'd much prefer man-marking, but the zonal system has worked remarkably well since Rafa's second season. The point is either system looks crap if the players don't keep their discipline and concentrate. Uncle Roy played man-marking and we were utter shite at set pieces - stunningly so. It still makes me ill to think about those dark days. With a settled back four of Johnson, Carra, Agger or Skrtel and Aurelio I don't think we'd be discussing the topic. As it is, we have far too many players in the box unsure of what they're doing, the ball ping-pongs from one body to another or is hoofed up to where no player is standing, and we're under pressure. But it's not about systems.

As for OUR set pieces, I couldn't agree more. At corners, Gerrard needs to be in the centre, waiting for the cross.

The one plus point for me from last night was that our corners were far far better than usual. They even bordered on threatening.

Agree with that, Mascherano also seemed alright at taking set pieces.
