Set-piece takers

I happened to watch a bit of Ingolstadt vs Hertha Berlin today and it struck me how both teams had really quality deliveries from set plays. Nothing too special, but just good CONSISTENT deliveries that caused some kind problems almost every time. Those two German teams are as mid-table as it gets, but if you compare them and LFC on this component alone, it's like we are the hopeless mid-table team and they are Real and Barcelona. How is it that with all the money we've spent on players, we can't buy one who can beat the first man consistently from a corner?

It's especially criminal since with the likes of Benteke, Skrtel, Can and Sakho we do have some height and physicality that could be a real threat given the right delivery. I wonder what Klopp is thinking seeing how shit we are at this. His Dortmund team was pretty good at corners and free-kicks, particularly with Reus and Sahin on the delivery.

I think Moreno's delivery is quite good. He should definitely take corners from the right.

But otherwise, there is definitely a lack of players who can strike a dead ball in this squad.

Yeah, Moreno is the only one whose delivery I liked recently. He has enough power to make the ball zip, not "float".

I actually wanted to post something about this today ... I used to want Gerrard in the box all the time, but if we had him today, I'd want him to take corners as our corners have been utter pish.

We rarely create any danger from them, not to mention free kicks into the box.

Something has to be done ...

Also direct free-kicks. When was the last time we scored from one of those?

At one point I kind of defended Rodgers for passing on Eriksen (even though I liked Eriksen at Ajax), but what a blunder this is proving in hindsight! A great set-piece taker could be worth something like 10 points during the course of a season.

Charlie Adams would argue against that mate.

Well, he should be at least competent from open play too. Also somehow Adam's set pieces turned mostly crap while he was here and magically improved at Stoke. Is that an LFC curse?

Officially, no.
Speaking realistically, yes.

Back to me herbs

Henderson will probably take them when he's back. His set piece delivery is pretty decent.
Moreno should definetly take them from the right side.

Shortage of good set piece takers though. When we had Suarez you just knew it would be dangerous if we got a free kick close to goal. Now you're just more surprised IF its dangerous.

You do wonder what these jokers actually work on when they're training. When they take corners, they spend about thirty seconds making sure that the ball is a fraction outside the arc (oh, what devious rascals they are!), and then either hit it flatly towards the shins of the first defender, or straight into the hands of the keeper. They did try a few fancy free kick routines earlier in the season - most of which appeared to have been copied from YouTube clips of Sweden circa 1992 - but they were so slowly and ponderously executed they came to naught.

I agree Macca - Its woeful. These people should be able to deliver each and every time on corners . There is no one interfering with them, they have time, it's a regular size and weight ball and the target area is pretty standard. They should be like darts players going for treble twenty. Wizzy your memory seems blurred Gerrard was shite at corners.

Surely Coutinho has the skill and ability to ping in a good corner? Get him to practice and work on it so it's consistent and have Moreno from the other side.

You would think so wouldn't you at the moment he's as hapless as the rest. I have my money on Firmino to come good on that score.

Yeah, it made no sense to pass on Eriksen. The price was reasonable.

I'd also let Frimino have a crack at the corners. Henderson will probably take them when he returns from injury.

It might help if we tried a few inswinging corners. Also for outswinging ones how about setting the ball in the optimum position so that the taker doesnt have to practically run down the sideline to get his kick in without kickicking the flag.

It fucking beggars belief the way these guys are hitting them

We should sign Calhanoglu then. I think he could be one of the all time greats at set pieces.

Can't take 'em, and can't defend 'em...

Don't know about the stats from other teams, but do our players seem to ruin corners by giving away needless fouls in the opposition box too often?
