Salah not tracking back or putting a shift in is a big fucking myth and I can't understand how our fans keep buying into it

Why is everyone so tetchy?

When he first hit the scene he did a similar job to Mane. He wasn't as effective at the defensive side of it, but that's hardly damning. For as productive a player, his willingness to press was remarkable.

Then, for the next few years, when Salah was the sharpest tip of a wicked blade, he cut inside a lot, and by Klopp's own admission at the time, was one of the only players somewhat allowed to not have defensive responsibilities at times. It made sense, he was explosive, save those explosions for running behind. His very presence required two defenders anyway, if we were able to have any amount of the ball, which we were.

Against harder teams, he'd still let his work rate show, which was seriously impressive, but it wasn't in his remit to defend as much as Mane, and he didn't. As he became more and more of the focus, he did less and less defensively.

That isn't a criticism of Salah! It's an explanation of how the system functioned, what it sacrificed to be strong elsewhere. When the player doing this isn't a central striker, your team is slightly unbalanced from left to right. With enough legs and a sharp enough attack, it doesn't matter. Robertson doesn't still have those legs, who the fuck could keep that up anyway, he was an absolute freak. Neither could our midfield.

What you lose changes, when Salah isn't as sharp by himself, in behind.

Interesting stats and discussion.

Hopefully you'll all keep me entertained for the full 11.5 hours of this flight to Shanghai - though at the rate at which I'm consuming Sauvignon Blanc I may be asleep shortly! 😀

Sauvignon Blanc!!!!!

Dear lord… I feel like an intervention’s needed!!!!

For the sake of just thinking about this more generally, let's look at a different club with a striker that scored with real consistency. An irreplaceable talent that would leave their club even deeper in the shit.

Harry Kane and Tottenham. A three time golden boot winner, he averaged something around 25 goals a season. He even adapted his play to drop deeper toward the end, allowing faster players to run through.

They're starting at a deficit of 25 goals now, right? They didn't replace him at all, really.

I had a couple whilst in SA last week - awesome, as was the dessert wine which I've forgotten the name of for the moment. And their Chenin was great too (a SA speciality). Wonderful country.

It improves the whole right side. Salahs defensive contributions are downplayed a lot in this thread and our new midfield will improve Trent as well.

His defensive contributions may be slightly downplayed, but as you'd expect a bulk of his pressing actions are far away from Trent. Szob is perfect, as he presses both halves of the pitch effectively.

Oh… I’d thoroughly recommend having a crack at S African Chenin… but I wouldn’t recommend drinking Savvie B from anywhere unless you like the flavours and aromas of cats piss!!!

There's no hope for me, I'm strictly Chardonnay

Chardonnay is delicious - it’s my second favourite white after Riesling.

Chardie is a lot more complex and tells you more about the winemaker than anything else.

Far from having no hope - you’re a connoisseur of the finest of white wines!!!

I reckon Salah wasn't sold in Aug/Sep as this thread hadn't reach 100 pages. Come Jan it will have done, in which case he will be gone. That is the way of the System

Nah. Love me a NZ or SA SB. The SA versions (extensive wine list at the lodge - 8 SBs alone!) are very very different to those from NZ / Chile etc. The sommelier gave an extensive explanation as to why.

You prefer Riesling!?! It's like drinking dessert wine! I was offered one at the restaurant Hyde in London a few days ago. I almost choked on it and politely refused !
The sommelier did explain this one was particular but OMG.

Something to do with climate & soil type producing a greener more acidic Savvie b Vs warmer slightly less acidic style, that probably had some wood treatment to add texture and build out flavour… at a guess.

You’re triggering here Froggy!!!!

The thing you to remember about Riesling is it the purest representation of a grape varietal you tend to get - there’s generally no obvious winemaking tricks employed - so it’s the polar opposite of Chardonnay.

But… what is different about Riesling is it runs the whole spectrum from bone dry to sickly sweet with everything in between.

Primary fruit flavours are citrus - so there’s fruit sweet like Lemon, lime or grapefruit - but it’s not sugar sweet like lemonade - although it can be if that’s what you want.

Savvie B tends towards tropical fruits like passionfruit, Chardonnay tends towards apple.

The trick with Riesling is determining what style you like and asking for that style!

Getnan Riesling tends towards off-dry, but again there’s a great deal of difference there. Aussie Riesling tends to be dry.

The other trick is knowing the vintage - if you like dry Riesling - it’s all about that fresh, acidic, zingy citrus fruit - so out want 1-2 year old stuff. 2023 Riesling in Australia, picked in Feb is hitting the shelves around now - anything older than 2021 is going to be different.

As Riesling ages, it develops secondary flavours - not everyone likes them - kerosene is the usual descriptor and it usually works better when there’s a bit of sugar sweetness in the wine.

Savvie B - not good for aging, generally - Chardie is good for aging - but in both, like Riesling it can depend on the style.

When you land on a Riesling style you like - then you’ll get it - great with spicy food & fish, as it gets sweeter then you get into more dessert wine territory.

Chenin Blanc is another than cat veer between dry and a little mid sweeter, even up to sweeter style.

I doubt he will sold in Jan, what makes you think firstly Salah will want to go?
I think that I read somewhere when this all started that salah said that he would like to go, but that he would not try to push anything through, that it would be down to Liverpool...

I always had myself down as a philistine when it came to wine, now I find out I'm a connoisseur [emoji1]

However not a fan of reisling.

Also I fucking hate pinot grig ... how does that rate my standing?

I don’t think there were any direct quotes from Salah or the agent related to this?
Do you have them.
Feels like so much mis information in one thread, I could be wrong ofcourse 🙂

Hatred of Pinot Grigio suggests you have taste buds.

Dislike of Riesling just means you deserve a beating.

Two out of three aint bad

You'll have to educate me on Reisling, I always considered it to be a sickly sweet wine, so haven't touched it in years ... but if that was because I was trying the wrong version, I'd love to have my pallet educated. I do recall buying 2L bottles of Lutomer, when I was a student (80s), as it was cheap ... so maybe that has coloured my opinion
