Last season he was our great defensive hope. Came in for a record fee for a defender, great pedigree, starter for France and unfortunately had an injury plagued first season. He performed reasonably well but apparently not well enough to convince Rodgers he didn't need to go and spend 20M on another CB.

Skrtel and Defensive Hope 14/15 aka Lovren have started the season together, so what does the future hold for poor 'ol Sakho? Can he force his way into the team or is he going to be backup (centre-backs don't really get rotated in the same way other outfield players do)?

It will be Lovren - Sakho in the future imho.
WC and injuries have prevented him from starting now.

Rodgers would have bought Lovren regardless.

I think he's going to have an excellent second season. He'll be starting alongside Lovren within weeks.

I reckon he's being given a prolonged rest after the world cup, I think we'll see him playing in the league cup in a couple of weeks time, hopefully he can force himself in.

This.

We needed strength in depth anyway and I'm sure Rodgers has lost confidence in Agger so he had to make a move.

Yeah I hope he gives him and Lovren an extended run of games together - and sooner rather than later. He's better than Skrtel in my opinion and Sakho/Lovren has the potential to be a pretty beastly pairing for the best part of a decade.

Let's plan on defending against Spurs before we start talking about the next decade.

I'm a big Skrtel fan but I thought the starting pair would be Lovren Sahko if we went with 2 cbs.

I think it will happen soon.

Skrtel's 29 and making mistakes a 15 year old shouldn't be making.

I like him and all but we need to be fucking ruthless.

I recently read some stat-filled analysis of Sakho's performance last season. I can't remember the exact detail but based on tackles won and distribution he was up there in the top 5 CBs in Europe. I like him but watching him I never feel the assurance those stats tell me I should. However if the alternative is Skrtel, I'd still pick him.

Long time since I seen you posting?

Thanks for the idea 😉 Note these are per 90 mins metrics.

Does anyone reckon Sakho will come in against Spurs?

I don't think so; I think maybe Rodgers will use the international break to make a switch to give Sakho minutes though. It'd be weird to do that swap now especially after the last game, when Lovren's performance was scrutinized and criticized more than Skrtel's. Although having said that, Skrtel did pick up a knock near the end of the City game after Yaya Toure's challenge, so if he's not fully fit, maybe Sakho will come in. But if he is fit, I think he'll start this one.

I'm not sure Rodgers rates Sakho tbh. He's never really picked him consistently when he's been available.

Like I've said elsewhere, I'm not entirely sure changing personnel solves much, we're shipping goals regardless and I don't think Sakho has been that convincing, but a change is as good as..
