Sakho and Skrtel

They are looking not too bad playing together, aren't they? Under Rodgers they had a tendency to drop too deep when playing in a back 4, but now they both look pretty comfortable playing a high line. Skrtel in particular seems to have settled down after a nervous start under the new manager and with each game it seems like they complement each other's roles better – Sakho does most of the forward passing (you could say he's performing the Hummels role) and Skrtel goes for most of the high balls and last-ditch tackles, which is what he does best.

The harder tests will come later, when opposition managers figure our Klopp's system and will start drawing up specific plans to exploit any potential weakness; for one thing Skrtel and Sakho have not yet been tested by a striker of genuine pace and quality (other than Mane, who did score and cause problems). But so far the signs are good and we might have makings of a spine here.

They look out for each other, and at one point yesterday they were sharing a laugh after they sorted out a problem - a very good sign. Last season there would have been silence and nervy expressions.

I'd say not having the FB's constantly pushing on and having some sit deeper in midfield has probably helped make them look a little more secure.

It would not at all surprise me if Lovren looked much better in our current set up.

Much better but if we're going to mount a serious challenge next year it's an area we have strengthen. Based on the last few weeks, I'd be happy to start with Sakho and see Skrtel replaced.

I am happy with Skrtel and Sakho together for now. I hope we call back Illori, no that Kolo is also injured. That Sherwood cunt wont give him any chance

The end of the Chuckle Brothers' routine at the back - 'To you, to me...' - is a blessed relief. They actually try to move the ball forward. Back to the future.
At one point yesterday Sakho monstered someone off the ball by the touchline, pulled the ball back & there were a couple of our defenders behind him, but a fair few Chelsea players & the rest of our players were trying to get back, he was still under pressure from the player he'd just dispossessed.

Instead of playing it out he simply wellied it into the stand. Rodgers would have been furious, but it was the right thing to do, we got everyone back & defended the throw properly in numbers.

They were both excellent overall yesterday and, as mentioned, no fucking around at the back and putting each other in dangerous situations.

Has to be said that Lucas offered an outlet for them every time they were on the ball.

It's still baby steps and we definitely need personnel upgrades across the squad but it is heartening to see the changes in performance from our established players under Klopp.

Yep I noticed that on more than a few occasions yesterday. If in doubt hoof it out. Happy with that.

Big-Ups to Skrtel for not retaliating when that mucky Costa gypo kicked him in the stomach. He showed great maturity and wound himself in after a split second. A reaction could have seen a red card and a different result to the game.

Skrtel loves a dust-up with Costa.

That petulant little kick wasn't the most obvious to spot by the ref, but you could tell Costa was worried he was going to get carded for it, because he made that desperate effort to cling onto Skrtel's hand in the time-honoured "no intent there ref, look he's helping me up, just two fine professionals engaged in a tough, but fair physical battle"

Here's a good analysis of our current first-choice defensive partnership:

http://www.thisisanfield.com/2015/1...rtel-establish-strong-partnership-vs-chelsea/

It's not very balanced. It's pretty much "Sakho is head and shoulders above everyone and always was, while Skrtel is a mistake waiting to happen". It's does go on to give him credit, but the crux of the article is that Sakho is a clear ever present for the longterm, while Skrtel won't be, which might be valid point if it wasn't so painfully transparent in giving Skrtel begrudged credit.

Sakho wasn't particularly great or consistent under Rodgers, so he was by no means a guaranteed success, he figured in that diabolical display against Stoke and was one of the main culprits (for example), so he was hardly an unequivocal success.

The example of the first goal on Saturday being Skrtel's fault is pathetic. Has anyone at all blamed Skrtel for the goal? - following his poor contribution to Ramires’ goal just four minutes in on Saturday.

It was a succession of errors:

*Lucas poor pass in the build up which saw Chelsea win the ball back deep in our half
*Milner getting left for dead
*Moreno doing his standard, static ball watching, allowing a free header on goal.

It was barely down to the split second Skrtel had to move out of position to sweep up the mistake by our right handside. He moved towards the player to close the play, Sakho moved over and left a gap in behind which Moreno failed to control. It was a succession of movement that was started by our inability to clear our lines. If you're going to blame Skrtel, you may aswell blame Sakho too. It was neithers fault, they were left in a position where the wide player was given too much space to exploit and it stretched the three remaining defenders.

There's some good points in there, but the fact he starts off by saying that there's Sakho and then there's the much of a muchness that is Skrtel, Toure and Lovren, just pretty much undermines the whole analysis. He could have focused on the number of times Sakho plays the wrong ball into a player under pressure, his poor first 20 minutes last week, etc. It's easy to pick out particular aspects of games to highlight one players lapses while heaping praise on another players positive contributions.

The idea that Costa targeted Sakho initially and got nothing from him is bullshit, in the frame for the goal that the writer shows, Sakho has Willian and Skrtel has Costa in their respective zones, so who was Costa targeting then?
