[article=http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/dundee-united-kid-ryan-gauld-2785846]THE only thing Messi about Ryan Gauld is his bedroom.

And the fact he’s still ordered to tidy it by his parents in Laurencekirk will ensure he never takes comparisons between himself and Barcelona superstar Lionel too seriously.

It would be easy for the 17-year-old to believe in his own hype. After all, how many Scottish teenagers are linked with a move to Real Madrid?

But Gauld’s upbringing in the Angus town means his tiny feet are still firmly on the ground.

The Dundee United whizz-kid has taken the Premiership by storm this season.

His ability on the ball, allied to his work rate and attitude, has made Gauld the hottest prospect in our game.

And at just 5ft 5ins, the Baby Messi nickname was inevitable.

But as he prepared for his first Scotland Under-21 cap tomorrow night, Gauld revealed he’d be embarrassed to try any of the little Argentine’s bag of tricks.

And he revealed the rumours about being on Carlo Ancelotti’s radar at the Bernabeu went in one ear and straight out the other.

Gauld said: “I’m aware of the hype surrounding me but I haven’t taken any of it in.

“I hear and see things but they leave my head straight away. I don’t think about them – I just get on with my football.

“My mum and dad make sure it doesn’t get to me. I can’t let things change no matter how much my name gets mentioned. I know I have to keep working hard at Dundee United.

“I still stay at home in Laurencekirk and I’m treated like any normal teenager. Nothing has changed.

“My mum still gets me to do all the usual jobs around the house like tidying my room.

“So my life hasn’t changed much. Obviously if I make a good impact on the pitch, I’ll be talked about even more. And that’s my aim, to do well on the pitch every time I play.

“But the rest of it just comes with the job, it’s not something I can help and it’s a good sign if my name’s being mentioned.”

Being christened Baby Messi by his Tannadice team-mates was always going to put pressure on Gauld to perform.

But the youngster finds it comical and confessed he’s as mesmerised by the Barca man’s sublime skills as anyone.

He said: “It’s more the people my own age, rather than the older boys, who take the mickey out of me about that. I don’t read anything into it all.

“Maybe one day all that can come into play. All the headlines can be a bit baffling but I don’t let them get into my head.

“I’ve watched Messi ever since he started playing in Barcelona’s first team and he’s the best player in the world. He is someone I would always look up to and try to base my game around.

“But you can’t compare anyone with Messi because he is from a different planet. I see him do things and think, ‘how the hell has he done that?’. I don’t tend to try them in case I end up embarrassing myself.”

Gauld recently signed a new long-term deal with United and rejected the chance to let his contract run down before moving to England or abroad.

Such is the level head on his shoulders, he’s adamant staying on Tayside will aid his development far more than joining a bigger club where he may not feature.

He appreciates what he has, which isn’t always the case with Scotland’s talented young players.

Gauld said: “Some of my pals from Laurencekirk are at university but others are doing small jobs.

“It’s a quiet place with not much to do. But myself, John Souttar and Euan Spark – who all signed new contracts at United – played for the same boys club there. We’ve all grown up together and are now doing OK for ourselves.

“Staying at home is best for me right now, that’s why I signed. If I was to move I might not get first-team games and that’s important for me at this stage.

“I need to continue to develop as a player. I’m only going to learn by playing games, so Dundee United is the best place for me.”

Gauld regards ex-United skills guru Ian Cathro as a huge influence on his career and feels Tannadice youth coach Stevie Campbell has been like a second father to him.

But it’s current gaffer Jackie McNamara who has given him the chance to shine on the big stage and that’s what earned him an Under-21 call-up.

And he’s hoping some of the rough treatment he’s already received from top-flight defenders will stand him in good stead for the Euro qualifier against Georgia in Paisley tomorrow night.

Gauld said: “The manager has been brilliant with me.

“I wasn’t expecting an Under-21 call-up but I’m excited. The Scottish Premiership is a physical league and I’m not the biggest. It’s about what I do on the ball and if I’m being fouled a lot, I must be doing a good job.”[/article]

[article=http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/liverpool-transfer-target-ryan-gauld-2848312#ixzz2lfzJXJ4P] Manchester United and Liverpool scouts were once again dazzled by Dundee United’s ‘Mini Messi’ as they watched starlet Ryan Gauld serve up FOUR assists on Saturday.

The 17-year-old was unstoppable in the Terrors’ 4-1 win over Partick Thistle, and sent Premier League talent-spotters home purring about the Scottish starlet.

Aberdeen-born Gauld has attracted interest from Real Madrid thanks to his impressive attacking displays, and the Tannadice club are demanding £6million to part with one of Europe’s hottest young properties.

Earlier this month, David Moyes sent Jimmy Lumsden to watch Gauld make his Scotland’s Under-21s debut against Georgia.

Newcastle and Everton were also thought to have sent scouts to the game.

[article=http://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/english/arsenal-will-send-scout-to-watch-ryan-gauld-1-3213664]Arsenal are understood to have joined the race for Dundee United youngster Ryan Gauld and will run the rule over the teenager at this evening’s William Hill Scottish Cup fourth-round tie against Kilmarnock.

Manchester United, Liverpool, Everton and Real Madrid have all watched Gauld this season, with the 17-year-old fast becoming the hottest young property in Scottish football after a string of impressive performances.

Last Saturday, Gauld had assists in all four United goals in a 4-1 Premiership drubbing of Partick Thistle before being helped off. He is set to shake off a knee injury in time to face Kilmarnock tonight, when he’ll be given another opportunity to enhance his growing reputation.

Arsenal will send a scout north to watch the match, while a report yesterday also claimed that one Italian side has recently lodged an interest with United, and two leading Bundesliga clubs – one of which plays in the Champions League – will make bids in January. Gauld signed a new, long-term contract at Tannadice a few weeks ago.

Of course, United manager Jackie McNamara won’t get caught up in the fuss surrounding Gauld and has called on his side to carry on their fine run of form in tonight’s tie.

United are enjoying a purple patch which saw them move up into fourth place in the Scottish Premiership thanks to the win over Partick. Now they welcome Allan Johnston’s side to Tayside for the fourth-round tie, and McNamara has challenged them to reproduce the form they’ve been showing in recent weeks as they bid to progress in the cup.[/article]

It's about time Scotland produced another "wee jinky winger" - it's been a while.

He certainly looks a real prospect, hes got great balance, close control, makes good runs into attacking positions and hes already a decent finisher. What sort of fee are they asking for him

[article=http://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/447512/Mersey-clubs-eye-up-Dundee-United-kids]PREMIER LEAGUE big guns Everton and Liverpool have stepped up their pursuit of Dundee United’s superkids.

Toffees head scout Kevin Reeves travelled north for a third time in recent months to watch Ryan Gauld, Andrew Robertson and John Souttar play their part in a 4-1 win over Hearts.

Joining the Goodison Park spy in the stands was Liverpool’s chief scout, Alan Harper.

Harper has been an almost permanent fixture at United games this season, submitting glowing reports on the star trio to boss Brendan Rodgers. In particular, left-back Robertson has caught the eye and his display in the beating of Hearts only added to the reputation of Scotland’s player of the month for November.

Tannadice was again packed with scouts from clubs in England and abroad on Saturday.

Spies from QPR, Cardiff City, Manchester City, Manchester United, Southampton and Wigan, as well as Roma, were on hand to monitor the trio earmarked as among the hottest teenage talents in Europe.

It now seems inevitable United boss Jackie McNamara will have to deal with bids for all three in the January transfer window.

Souttar – still only 17 – has already turned down a move to Sunderland, but remains in the sights of several top flight clubs.

Robertson’s admirers grow by the week and the 19-year-old – who only turned full-time in August after joining from Queen’s Park – is also on the verge of Scotland honours with Gordon Strachan impressed.

Gauld, rated at £6million by United, has been named the SPFL young player of the month, but refuses to let the attention go to his head.

And, while the 17-year-old is open about his next move, he has hinted he’d prefer to look abroad.

He said: “In England, it’s more athletes. Being smaller, I need to think about what’s best for me and what’s best around me – and I think being abroad is the best culture of football for me.

“If I were to go down there, I’d have to think what my chances are of first team football. If I was stuck in the reserves, how much would I enjoy that?”[/article]

On a sidenote, Alan Harper was a Hodgson appointment. Didn't realise he's still at the club.

Apologies for bumping this - it didn't seem worth a new thread - but this lad was interviewed on Football Focus on Saturday (15th). I presume it's on i.player. He seemed very mature and certainly one to watch.

Yeah, seemed like a nice lad.

Wonder how he would compare to Ibe and Sterling, though. We've got some promising players coming through in the same position. Sergi Canos also looks a cracking player.
