Roy Hodgson

In the first place, mate, I don't know about "every chance", and secondly it's perfectly legit to take the view at this stage - when his arrival is still an assumption, Vlad and others notwithstanding - that we could and should do better than Hodgson.

when Benitez took over, no one would offer over 10 million for any of our players bar the home grown Gerrard, now we have players like Mascherano, Torres, Reina, who are worth silly money and Alonso who was sold for the third highest amount ever from the English league. Benitez left us a valuable squad, Houllier did not

I remain unconvinced what kind of players Hodgson would sign/attract, or rather since Purslow is running the show what kind of players HE will sign

Teams would have paid a lot for Hyypia and a lot for Hamann. We also got a lot for Fowler and would have got more for Owen had the circumstances been different.
At that stage we had just paid a huge amount for Cisse too, so strictly speaking had we sold him straight away we would have got most of that back.

Yes those players you mention are worth a lot, but then they cost a lot too didn't they?

If they squad that Benitez left was so amazing then why did we only finish 7th in the league?

Perhaps you are correct JJ, I certainly wouldn't be one to take you on about it.
But it does look like he is the chosen one so lets just see how he does and give him our support, which I'm sure you will of course.

I agree with this. I want better than Roy Hodgson. But i will be rooting for him, if he is indeed appointed. I have nothing against the man. I just feel we deserve better.

What 'big names' do people think we've got the money to sign?

Hahahaha

Hodgeson's been hired because we do not have much money

It's why we should not be optimistic of our immediate future under these owners.

People need to learn to separate those two issues.

why the fuck have we got two Roy Hodgson threads with the same arguments going around in circles on them both, could we merge them please........................

regards

According to BBC Radio 5 Live news at 2.30 pm today (Friday) Roy Hodgson is still favourite to take over from Rafa, but there are two other candidates in the frame ........ neither of whom is Kenny Dalglish.

He's been off the cards for weeks.

Here's the story on the BBC website

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/l/liverpool/8721942.stm

Fulham boss Roy Hodgson is the strong favourite to become the next manager of Liverpool, BBC Sport understands.

An announcement is not expected over the weekend, unless developments progress rapidly over the coming days.

The Reds are still exploring options as they search for a successor to Spaniard Rafael Benitez, whose six-year reign ended earlier this month.

There are another two candidates in the running but former Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish is not one of them.

Hodgson has remained tight-lipped over rumours linking him with the vacant Liverpool job.

"I'm Fulham manager. I'm perfectly happy at Fulham," the BBC World Cup pundit told presenter Gary Lineker in Cape Town recently. "There's a lot of speculation but I can't enlighten you."

After six years in charge, Benitez left Liverpool by mutual consent and has since joined Champions League winners Inter Milan.

The hugely experienced Hodgson has been in charge of Fulham since December 2007, signing a new 12-month rolling contract in December 2009.

Although he suffered a difficult start to his tenure - winning only nine points from his first 13 league matches - he saved the club from relegation that season, securing survival on the final day of the campaign.

The following season he steered the club to seventh place in the Premier League in 2009 - their highest finish - and a place in the Europa League.

The 62-year-old's achievement in guiding Fulham to the final of that competition last season - beating Juventus and Wolfsburg on route - saw him named manager of the year by the League Manager's Association.

Among the previous clubs Hodgson has managed are Italian giants Inter Milan and Blackburn, while he has also taken charge of Switzerland, who he guided to the last 16 of the 1994 World Cup.

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill, former Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini, ex-Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink, Croatia coach Slaven Bilic and former Manchester City manager Mark Hughes have all been linked with the Liverpool post.

My point is context needs to be examined when discussing managerial appointments. People all too go off on past achievements and names, rather than what individual qualities a manager has. For all Benitez's achievements at Valencia, what did they achieve here? The majority of reds fans thought he would never win the league the Premiership - which is why it's equally important to look at skill sets and other criteria.

The ideal candidate knows the English league, because with our climate we cannot afford to have a long period of adjustment; is at least diplomatic with our owners; has a proven record of operating on low wages and transfer budgets; get's the best out of his eleven players; makes sensible, logical tactical decisions, and is performing well currently.

The ability to speak a load of languages is another bonus.

Hodgson ticks a lot of the right boxes

It's the owners (+ Rafa) of why we're in a position to not be able to attract the Van Gaal's and Mourniho's, and that anger is spilling out onto Hodgson to embarrassing effect.

This appointment certainly isn't excited, granted. It's no Mourinho showing up with a swagger and a promise to lift the league, or the sentimental return of Dalglish which many fans long for. Howerver, the appointment of Hodgson is both a sensible and welcome one.

Those, like me, who want Dalglish back base that view on much more than mere sentiment. And I've not yet come across all this anger directed at Hodgson which you and others keep talking about, not on this site anyway.

However, you do put up the best case for Hodgson I've seen yet. Props for that much at least.

The worst thing about appointing Hodgson is that it points to no takeover deal imminent.

New owners surely wouldn't appoint him.

[/quote]has this been confirmed.

The appointment of Hodgson will be a masterstroke by the owners and board of managing expectations.

He's a nice man in a lovely blazer with wavy hair and who speaks with a charming inability to pronounce his r's. He'll be diligent, hardworking, empathetic, diplomatic and is worthy of respect and a fair go. Nobody has a bad word to say about him because he really could be your favourite uncle.

Only heartless persons would deny him the opportunity. He'll cuddle, cajole and organise those players left behind from the current squad, he'll even soothe them in their native tongue. He won't mess with 'continental' tactics or rotation or trying players in unorthodox positions because his is a tried and trusted system. He'll be safe, we'll stay 7th and we'll still be able to boast that we are Mersyside's finest.

He'll thank us for the honour of managing this once great club when he's replaced by the new owners and we'll wish him well in his retirement with fondness. We'll say thanks for the comfort blanket Roy now have a happy dotage; there'll be none of that beastly 'Thanks for the CL now fuck off'.

Yes, a steady man doing a steady job. SCM will be electrified by our long runs in the Europa league and the FA Cup and we'll tut tut at those big boys spending obscene amounts on star players. They'll be a warm, fuzzy feeling all round the fields of Anfield Road, the Kop may even break into a Beatles song for fond memories, just like those 60's documentaries.

I hope my unfair sarcasm comes back to bite me and I'll be proved completely wrong. I'm willing to be soothed, surprised and to be told that my expectations were too high.

Bring it on.

Quite. Unless the guy in possession happens to be tearing up the Prem, new owners are a good deal more likely than not to want their own man in. That's why an interim appointment would be the most forward-looking one.
